Don't you think there should be another scan after CS in order for you to check again if you have forgotten foreign objects inside the patient.

Keeping track of what's used in the first place does that. It's a person's job to count and double count.

How do they "forget" these things inside a person? It seems it's deliberate so that they will have a repeat patient to take it out. Perhaps money is the motivation.

My thought too. A friend's sister undergone surgery for appendicitis, and after about a year, she was always crying and hold the area where the stitches was.

She was taken back to the hospital only to find out a small scissors-like object was forgotten inside her.

Doctors dey try shaa.

There's a lot of reasons why this may happen but money is not one as this is a very costly mistake. While hospitals have developed methods to keep track of sponges and other surgical items, in practice, there are several factors that contribute to this issue. This problem is especially likely to occur if the surgery is an emergency procedure, is very long, or has complications arise in the course of it. A sponge soaked in blood is also easily overlooked in a visual inspection.
If its the same hospital responsible for the retaining of the material also carried out the removal there's no billing but if a different hospital the patient may have to pay and will be advised on how to take it up as a medicolegal issue and get compensated and the surgeon responsible for the mistake may be punished.

Why don't you people count how items you brought to the theater and recount before stitching the person? See, I will go physical if it happens to a family member.

FIRST;
I FOUND NAIL and was removed endoscopically.

SECOND was a TOY BEAD impacted at the Tracheoesophageal junction of a CHILD, which led to respiratory embarrassment.

THIRD, was a macerated Gauze Bandage left inadvertently in the peritoneal cavity of a patient who later came down with a high output enterocutaneous (faecal) fistula.

And you think we understand?

Ok but to be on a safer side can a patient still request for another scan a day or two after CS just to be safe. I'm afraid because I'm a lady, and I believe most of the victims were women

A very unusual mistakes, how on earth do people forget stuffs inside a human during surgery ?

Like you said. Unusual mistake. I know they trained for it but its not easy keeping a laser accuracy for hours of standing and ocassionally shifting from trying to fix the target problem and trying to keep the patient alive cos of unforseen complications.

Its not easy. Knew a surgeon who fainted cos of lack of sugar. Dude been working 12hrs straight.

In one of my shifts as a resident a woman once gave birth through CS and after discharge and she was supposed to be healing, her abdominal cavity was swelling up and painful and the area in the abdomen that was stitched was bleeding and pus was coming out. She was rushed in when her hubby felt something was not right and a CT scan was ordered. There in the abdominal cavity were some unusual foreign bodies which in a normal human viscera shouldn't be there. She was put into the theatre for an operation and immediately she was opened up there in the abdominal cavity were two gauze sponges used to soak up the bleeding but retained after the CS with massive antibody-antigen reaction taking place there. It was horrible but thank God she lived she was lucky enough sepsis did not occur
Gauze sponges, yes! It's a commonplace smiley

I once worked with a vet who lost his wife to something similar. Doctors at UCH forgot hand towel in her after closing her up.
She had serious pains and she was taken to another hospital for scan where the foreign body was discovered in her but she couldn't make past surgery to remove the towel.

Yes very possible. But truly in a setup like the picture below the orderly or the assistant keeps track of what is handed over to the surgeon or the med/surg nurse to use but some in some hospitals a surgeon may just take one or two nurses to assist him in the theatre and an oversight may occur.

My eyes have seen and my ears have heard.
Way back during my Housemanship we had this copa(Corps member aka NYSC) serving in one of the Ogoni LGAs in Rivers State. She had CS, but developed abdominal abscess few weeks after the CS. Her wound was healed but her abdomen was swollen and firm with severe pain/tenderness. Vomiting and spike in temperature was a mainstay for her and she was rushed to BMSH. She was admitted under my surgical team, as the houseman I took her history from the A&E and placed her on NPO, fluid and antibiotics cover until the surgeon came.
We sent her for abdominal USS, but the scan was showing that it was an abscess.

We rushed her for operation(exploratory laparostomy) with an Obstetrician present, only for us to open her up to our greatest surprise we found a surgical towel that was used to pack her intestines. Crazy stuff.

I'm glad that lady survived and we've been friends till date

When you have only one doctor doing everything, when I had surgery, at General hospital, the doctors were about 3, excluding the anesthetist, what one could not see his colleagues will see it, it was a team work, and I didn't have any further complications to the Glory of God. From the day I decided to have the surgery I refused private hospital, even though it took me months to be booked, it was worth the wait.
pls which hospital
