olasaad: Keeping track of what's used in the first place does that. It's a person's job to count and double count. 2 Likes |

BRATISLAVA: My thought too. A friend's sister undergone surgery for appendicitis, and after about a year, she was always crying and hold the area where the stitches was. She was taken back to the hospital only to find out a small scissors-like object was forgotten inside her. Doctors dey try shaa. |

They can be sued in tort you know For unliquidated dameges. [author=BRATISLAVA post=86878471] How do they "forget" these things inside a person? It seems it's deliberate so that they will have a repeat patient to take it out. Perhaps money is the motivation. [/quote] 1 Like |

proclinician: Ok but to be on a safer side can a patient still request for another scan a day or two after CS just to be safe. I'm afraid because I'm a lady, and I believe most of the victims were women 5 Likes |

Olumighty123: Like you said. Unusual mistake. I know they trained for it but its not easy keeping a laser accuracy for hours of standing and ocassionally shifting from trying to fix the target problem and trying to keep the patient alive cos of unforseen complications. Its not easy. Knew a surgeon who fainted cos of lack of sugar. Dude been working 12hrs straight. 8 Likes |

I once worked with a vet who lost his wife to something similar. Doctors at UCH forgot hand towel in her after closing her up. She had serious pains and she was taken to another hospital for scan where the foreign body was discovered in her but she couldn't make past surgery to remove the towel. 2 Likes 1 Share |

olasaad: Yes very possible. But truly in a setup like the picture below the orderly or the assistant keeps track of what is handed over to the surgeon or the med/surg nurse to use but some in some hospitals a surgeon may just take one or two nurses to assist him in the theatre and an oversight may occur. 10 Likes 1 Share

My eyes have seen and my ears have heard. Way back during my Housemanship we had this copa(Corps member aka NYSC) serving in one of the Ogoni LGAs in Rivers State. She had CS, but developed abdominal abscess few weeks after the CS. Her wound was healed but her abdomen was swollen and firm with severe pain/tenderness. Vomiting and spike in temperature was a mainstay for her and she was rushed to BMSH. She was admitted under my surgical team, as the houseman I took her history from the A&E and placed her on NPO, fluid and antibiotics cover until the surgeon came. We sent her for abdominal USS, but the scan was showing that it was an abscess. We rushed her for operation(exploratory laparostomy) with an Obstetrician present, only for us to open her up to our greatest surprise we found a surgical towel that was used to pack her intestines. Crazy stuff. I'm glad that lady survived and we've been friends till date 18 Likes 3 Shares |
