Nigeria! Nigeria!

Una just remember that you need screening equipments since all these weeks that youve heard of the outbreak.

Well, even those tools there looks like obsolete. .

The tools they are using are what other countries are doing.

Plus they are using the best (see below...from Lagos airport and the photo was taken in January)

And as an expert puts it...

Ultimately, Cennimo said, the coronavirus will probably be stopped where it started — in China. Local control of infection at the source is the quickest way to end an epidemic, he said. This entails precisely what China has been doing, such as building hospitals to isolate and treat patients and closing schools and many businesses to increase "social distancing." That simply means keeping people from interacting as much as usual.

Italy has several cases of the coronavirus.

Plus...when he came in, he wasn't feverish. He got feverish 2 days later, went to hospital, and based on his travel history was isolated and tested....immediately.

Nigeria has reported the first confirmed case of coronavirus in sub-Saharan Africa.

The patient is an Italian citizen who works in Nigeria and flew into the commercial capital Lagos from Milan on 25 February.

Authorities say he is stable with no serious symptoms and is being treated at a hospital in Lagos.

The Nigerian government said it had prepared for this eventuality and had activated its national emergency operations centre to implement control measures.

The authorities have started identifying all those who may have come into contact with the patient since his return to Nigeria.

More than 80,000 people are now known to be infected in 40 countries. More than 60 people are known to have died outside China, where the outbreak began. However, the number of infections reported within mainland China continues to fall.

Elsewhere on the African continent, Algeria and Egypt have also confirmed cases of the disease.

The person you quoted is right.

Most coronavirus infectees are either

1.Asymptomatic

2.Have mild fever and cattarh in th e early stages...which is similar to many other respiratory diseases (In any hospital in Nigeria, in the outpatients, many people turn up with similar symptoms

3.The guy reported to the hospital the day after his symptoms got worse. And was isolated and tested based on his travel history.

I know you PDP and APC people when it suits you think that Nigeria is bad...but many things still work here very well.

A really 'good response....would be to quarantine everyone that comes into the country by road, air and sea for 14 days...and even then that is not guaranteed to stop the virus...as some people may still come down with the disease afterwards (and is a logistical nightmare)
My point exactly! In saner climes, new arrivals will first be quarantined for 14 days at the Port of entry, then transferred to their houses for further 14 days of self isolation! All the passengers on board the patient's plane is vulnerable to the virus. Some have proceeded to the East, some to the North and other places! Who will follow them up?

And because people like you have the wrong idea on development. You think that development is about sharing the money. it isn't. It is about using whatever limited resources you have to fill the needs of the wider world...which PDP and APC don't have an idea about.

I'm not panicking in fact I'm prepared before the first case reported, I'm in medical line and I've made extensive research but to be honest we need more than that , Italy even postpone some football match fixtures cos of this virus yet our government can't quarantine or have a centre for it.

Gnaeusmagnus:

Sorry, Gamal, and Nick, but you guys are getting it wrong here.

1.The type of screening the South Africans are doing is the same type of screening the Nigerians are doing...which is checking for temperature, the difference being that the SA people are doing it in the plane. Nigeria does it when you come in.

2.Either way, both methods won't stop the virus. The only way to see if someone is infected is by doing a blood test(Because asymptomatic patients would pass the screening test). Already, facilites are on ground to test for the virus.(for once the Ministry of Health was prepared in that regard).

3.For now, the best that can be done is to isolate every contact, and isolate every contact of every contact.....which is not going to be easy.

4.Don't panic.

In saner climes, they dont quarantine everyone for 14 days mind you.

Some countries have stopped flights from China, but that does not account for the other countries where the virus is.

And even the 14 days is not ironcast. People have sailed though the 14 days...and then come down with the virus later on.

Plus, quarantining eveyrone coming in for 14 days ...note...EVERYONE...is a logistical nightmare. The best we can do is isolate every case, and their contacts for now.

Plus, the guy was diagnosed yesterday.I am sure the authorities are tracing his contacts as we speak..and that takes time.

The man was just discovered yesterday....and they are probably tracing his contacts now.

Plus, we do have facilites. Not too fancy, but they exist.

Yes I know but we don't take things serious until we are hit. So many countries are taking serious measures to contain this yet we have figures over 200 millions, do you think if this hit Lagos hard . how and what are the methods on ground to contain, quarantine the people?? Will the few centres be enough ??

Good job! But how can they be screening at the airport with short sleeves? What if the tester becomes the infected? Why can't we just completely do something right and go the full hug in this country? Can't we afford those long....#sigh... Never mind. Good job once again.

I know it's a logistical nightmare cos it's not easy isolating and quarantining everyone entering the country by flight, but if they could at least do this for flights coming in from high risk countries only like China, Iran and Italy, that would have helped to prevent the case of this Italian we're having now. This man along with others on his flight who may be roaming about Lagos and other parts of the country spreading this virus were not quarantined. He had to turn himself in. If he had a wicked heart, he'd just stay in his house spreading the virus around his vicinity and community.

No measure is cast in iron, however we can still do better in terms of contact tracing, and encouraging people to observe some form of self isolation

3.Your idea...while good...and it may work...won't stop the virus. What of people who come in by road ?? People who are not truthful about their travel history.
4.Note that china, iran and italy are not the only countries affected. US, Japan, etc...

Ignorant ramblings. The fact that you are sick now doesn't mean you were showing symptoms yesterday hence the word incubation period.

Even your ignorant rant doesn't change the fact that our ports are on high alert and they are deploying electronic, manpower and scientific tools to detect and prosecute the virus, your fellow Nigerians rose up to detect, confine and treat the infected gentleman from Italy.

Just a few days ago, they conducted tests on a sick Lagosian, but it was negative so you can not open your hateful, bad bele, evil wishing and unpatriotic mouth to rant that your fellow Nigerians are not on the job doing their best.

Your fellow Nigerians are first responders, they are on the frontline facing danger to protect ungrateful loudmouths and cowards on the internet, but all hateful and unpatriotic people like you do is wish evil and calamity, celebrate and rejoice in destruction and negativity instead of rolling up your sleeves to contribute your own portion.

Btw, stop posting internet den say den say rubbish posted by internet cowards and unpatriotic losers.
