Assembly recommendation: You can join Amotekun if you’ve spent 20 years in Lagos, speak Yoruba

*As commanders get 5-year tenure

By the recommendations of Lagos State House of Assembly, only indigenes, or residents that have spent 20 years in the area and can speak the native language, will be members of the Amotekun corps.

These are some of the recommendations of Lagos State House of Assembly committee the House adopted on Monday.

The lawmakers adopted the recommendation of the report on a Bill for a law to amend Lagos State Neighbourhood Safety Corps Law 2019 to establish the Amotekun Corps.

The Committee
The House of Assembly Committee on Information, Strategy and Security chaired by Mr. Tunde Braimoh, had held a public hearing last Monday to get inputs from stakeholders.

Braimoh, while presenting the report, stated that the stakeholders at the public hearing made some observations.

One of them was the need to amend the long title of the Bill to reflect the strategic importance of the Amotekun in the operation of the agency.

Another is to create a new section to cater for the tactical training of the Corps; and that considerations should be given to uneducated hunters and other skilled members of the community.

According to him, “the Corps also should be able to collaborate and cooperate with security agencies in other states of the federation; that the law should prohibit the use or employment of the Amotekun Corps by any person or authority for political or personal use;

“There should be proper designation and clarification of the Amotekun symbol, and it is important to provide for insurance or other compensatory schemes for the Corps.”

Committee’s recommendation
The Committee of the Assembly made the following recommendations: that the title be redrafted as Lagos State Neighbourhood Safety Corps and Amotekun Corps (Amendment) Law, 2020; that the logo of the Amotekun shall remain the leopard and not cheetah;

“That the recruitment into the Amotekun of the agency shall be open to an indigene of the communities, where they seek to serve or to residents who have spent not less than 20 years in the community and understand the native language, among others.

Contributing, Noheem Adams observed that Section 34(7), which states that the Amotekun Corps Commander’s appointment for a term of four years and subject to the confirmation of the House of Assembly, should be made five years.

Meanwhile, Speaker of the House of Assembly, Mr. Mudashiru Obasa, assured that all necessary corrections made would be taken into consideration.

Thereafter, the House adopted the recommendations as the resolutions of the House.

That law in itself sounds crazy. Why should they recruit someone just based on the fact that they’ve lived 20years in a locality.

So for example, if an herdsman lived in that particular community for 20years, he is entitled to be part of Amotekun too?

Just like the Miyetti Allah leader in Oyo that claimed he lived in Oyo state for several decades and even said he married a Yoruba. After all his utterances and provocations, this kind of law from Lagos means he also qualifies to be part of Amotekun right?

Legendhero, are you really sure you are referring to a herdsman? Most of them don't speak Yoruba.

It's a Committee report, the Gov might decide to tweak it.
I also really doubt if someone who have co-habited with you that long can change overnight.

Well I hope the governor is wise enough to see the loophole in the said law.

I can see it’s still a recommendation. Let’s wait patiently for the final draft.

He is entitled on paper let u see what happens in practice.

The constitution forbids discrimination so they need to be wise..
Besides amotekun will have cleaners and cooks .
If they employ and say your job is to cut grass, feed pigs or wash toilet if you don't like it you can resign.

You have a point @the bolded. It could be they are trying to play safe to avoid constitutional issues.

Still make sense then.

Miyetti Allah are an association not a tribe. How are they different from NURTW ,Alaba Traders or Okada riders?
In Oyo state their activities would soon be banned just like in Ekiti.

Despite all their noise in the SW they are no more rev relevant or plentiful than fishermen or Suya sellers.
The only cattle rearing welcome in the SW is ranching

We are here.

I am going to enroll.

I can speak and write the language better than most indegenous people. I know the faweli and the konsonati. I know Ami ohun and the Yoruba amu t"orun wa names.

I read Alawiye and Efusetan Aniwura. I am eminently qualified!
