All of my post on this forum about akwacross/Efik ibibio unity are my lone idea because I think they should be more united and forge a common front . No Efik person I've ever shared the idea to supports any unity with akwa ibom people . I expressed the need for unity on many occasions to my dad and uncle and to a few people at Efik national Convention here in the US. not a single Efik person want any unity with Akwa ibom. On this forum, many Akwa ibom people also oppose unity.

I think there should be cultural exchanges and have one cultural body like Igbo have Ọhaneze , the Yoruba have Afenifere while the Hausa have Arewa
AkwaCross group is a huge group they can come together and even have a central language it's possible
In Igbo land we have over 20 dialects from Isobo to Anambra from Ikwerre to Nkwerre , from Asaba to Enugu but there is a central Igbo that all can key into and understand
Same with Yoruba, they have egba dialect, Ijebu , kabba, Okun , Ekiti dialect but the central dialect is Lagos type of Yoruba
While Kano Hausa is the central dialect of Hausa
The Akwa Ibom Cross River must find a middle ground

It's not the same because we have different cultures and beliefs, similar to Ibibio and Igbos, only our langauges are similar but not tradition and cultures.

The events that played out between yesterday and today is indeed a shame and one which sadly I dare say I am disappointed that my state, known for it's peaceful and loving people have decided to toe the path of crass nepotism in blocking a woman who although is not a Crossiverien by birth, happens to be married to a Crossiverien, ironically her mother is a Crossiverien and she was born and had lived all her life in Cross River which typically would mean she's "a daughter of the soil".

But people who are not Crossiveriens will be shocked that this rivalry will get to this level seeing Cross River and Akwa Ibom use to be one State. As a Crossiverien who was not born nor grew up home, this surprise struck me when I went to school in Calabar during my University days, I was shocked at the staunch hatred between indigenes of both States and for the purpose of clarity I must confess that this enmity is in two folds; hatred by the Efiks in Cross River towards their supposed brothers from the Ibibio and Anang stock in Akwa Ibom, this of course is vice versa and also a strong disdain from Northern and Central Crossiveriens towards Akwaibomites and for the purpose of record is also a mutual feeling.

The Efiks are largely easy going folks some may say docile but one thing is sure, they take life very easy and tend towards enjoying themselves and being jolly, in contrast, a typical man from Akwa Ibom is a hustler, very indoustrous, boisterous and domineering. Their adventurous nature has seen them become popular in places like Calabar South LGA, in fact folks from Akwa Ibom make up 60% of population in Calabar South. There is this joke in Calabar that during the days of Donald Duke, he went to visit a village in the Akpabuyo LGA, he asked for the Chief of the community and surprisingly he was told that the Chief went to his Village in Akwa Ibom, how ironic that an "outsider" is royalty in another man's village. These adventurous attitude and of course coupled with land grabbing expeditions by folks from Akwa Ibom brewed wrangling between the Efiks and their brothers from Akwa Ibom. Asides this, because of the the language similarities, most people from Akwa Ibom became mischievous and used that to their advantage by forging local government origins so as to get employment, admission and other gratifications from Cross River, deep down in them, they claim allegiance to Akwa Ibom but will also claim one village in either Calabar South, Odukpani or Akpabuyo when looking for perks.

On the one hand you have Central and Northern Cross River, these are ethnicities which are quite different in languages and culture from the Efiks and Akwaibomites, they had been tagged derogatory name as the Atams (whatever that means) by the Efiks and their brothers from Akwa Ibom, they, though being in majority had suffered marginalisation from time immemorial when the both States were one. These people also have a disdain towards Akwaibomites basically as a fight back towards undue entitlement mentality from Akwaibomites of either jobs, admission and benefits that comes with government. Typically, the Atam man hates the Akwa Ibom man just as in the same vain the Akwa Ibom man hates the Atam man. The Atam man which also sees himself as also boisterous and even adventurous in equal measure feels they must do everything it takes to push the Akwa Ibom man out because left to the Efiks, Akwaibomites will overun the whole Calabar and that’s why unfortunately the biggest losers in all of these are the Efiks, because due to the control of political office by folks from the Central and Northern Cross River for over 12 years now, concentration of government perks either by appointment, infrastructure, jobs, admission etc is given to people more from Northern and Central Cross River because the notion is that, that Efik man you want to give an opportunity, how sure are you he’s not from Akwa Ibom? This disdain is further fuelled by the fact that Crossiveriens are hardly given opportunities in Akwa Ibom. In the civil service, admission, contracts even at the level of academics, our children can’t even contest for Class Rep positions not to talk of the SUG, in fact there was an incident of one Prof. Unoh who wanted to be VC of University of Uyo, he was threatened till he was even shot at, sadly his driver died just because his colleagues from Akwa Ibom did not want him to emerge.
A twist to this bickering is the lost of oil wells belonging to Cross River by a “smart” Godswill Akpabuyo, right under the nose of Crossiveriens, Godswill in a typical sense man style used the National Boundary Commission to cart away oil wells belonging to Cross River while the then Governor of Cross River State was monkeying away. This singular act further heitened the tension between the two states because Crossiveriens saw it as an act of wickedness from her sister state and supposed child to want to steal her birthright and plunging her into poverty more so when Akwa Ibom has hundreds of oil wells.
Today in terms of oil allocation, Akwa Ibom gets the largest in the Country, Cross River is left with none, buy yet you have thousands of Akwaibomites living in Cross River, these people have to also share infrastructure provided by the Cross River State government yet, she was robbed of her wealth by Akwa Ibom.

So, these frictions have been going on and the event of the Chief Judge has further highlighted the rivalry between these States, but this is not to say there is no love, I will only say it’s a love-hate relationship because we are stucked with ourselves, there is intermarriage going on amongst us everyday, we interact at level of school and all that but the relationship has reached one where one looks at the other with suspicious eyes.
There are those who also believe that the decision not to allow Justice Ikpeme be the substantive Chief Judge is Political. Local Government Elections are just behind the corner, perhaps Gov Ayade does not want to take any chance and feels Ikpeme won’t play ball with him so he decided to push her away to give way for the next most senior Judge who happens to be from his senatorial district.
It should be worthy to note that the Speaker of the CRS House of Assembly (who gave a veto vote because voting proceedings to confirm Justice Ikpeme saw the election into a tie because 8 legislators were on the fence, 8 voted YES while another 8 voted NO, the Speaker’s vote voided the application) wife is from Akwa Ibom, infact about 4 members in the House Spouces are from Akwa Ibom.
In all, let love always lead and let us have the ability to tolerate ourselves. I’m this regard I doff my hat for the South West, they lead when it comes to tolerance, we all should learn from them.

Everything you wrote here is true, except for the fact you said "nothern and central Cross river are in the majority". That is where is a lie. If they were a majority why did they clamour for state creation when they have the numbers to dominate? It doesn't add up. Akwa Ibom alone has more population than cross river(efiks included) , check census or election results as far back as abiolas election to confirm, Akwa Ibom always gives atleast double of what Cross river gives, now by the time you add the efiks and recently akampa (the two lawmakers from there voted in favour of the woman and ibibio is the most spoken language there outside their native language) to their brothers in Akwa Ibom, the central and nothern cross riverians stood no chance and still stand no chance against us, hence they clamour for state separation, my own is unless power doesn't come back to southern Cross river which Akwa ibomites have domineering presence there, the atam people will have to thread with caution. Finally we call you guys atam because the atam people were the first central and nothern Cross riverians our fathers came in contact with, so I guess they assumed everybody from biase up is atam not knowing there were so many ethnicities there, it's nothing derogatory, it doesn't have meaning in our language.

Really The oil wells in Ibeno-Eket should have been for Cross River state Yet those are in Ibibioland So Igbo was coined in 1970 to represent all Igbo speaking groups, yet those groups have names with Igbo from centuries ago names begining and ending with Igbo. Efik, Annang and Ibibio might be speaking a pigin language of a sort mixed with their orignal languages, which is why some words are completely different like the Feces example I gave. Unlike the Igbo groups & Yoruba groups who despite speaking different dialects they all practice same traditions and have same beliefs. Whereas Efiks and Oron have more in common with some Cameroun groups like Ejagham, which they have admited that they migrated from Cameroun. Annang including their name and some of their matriachal cultures migrated from Ghana.
These groups just migrated to live next to Ibibio or were hosted by a small group of Ibibio(uruan) and adopted a few Ibibio traditions like Uruan adopted lots from Efik. Now U believe they split from each other If U Read the thread I gave U, you would've understood all as the people from those grous came to expalin their cultures & traditions. WHAT IS MY BUISNESS WITH THE DENIAL OF THE AKS JUDGE

For a lady, I really admire your knowledge and courage about your people, please keep it up.

However, let me correct you on some mistakes.

1) The differences between Ibibios, Efiks, Anangs and Orons cannot be compared to that of Spanish, Italian & French, rather it is more like the difference between Castillia, Galicia, Andalusia & Catalonia..
What is officially known as Spanish is CASTILLIAN.... Galicians, Andalusians, Catalans e.t.c speak very different languages/dialects and have different cultures, dressing and food from Spanish (Castillian)...
However, all these group of people remain under one Spanish nationality and identity except the Catalans who are very desperate to break out.

The Italians you are calling as one identity... Do you know the strong factions, divisions and bitterness that exists within them? Infact, not until 100-200 years ago, There was no lingua franca (official dialect) in Italy... Every region of Italy spoke an entirely different language, practice different traditions, values, food, farming e.t.c. Some don't even see eye to eye ... Till now the divisions are still strong, but it has reduced unlike before.


2) Who told you that all the Igbo/Yoruba subgroups only speak different languages but have the same culture? The cultures are related, but they are not the same!

Do you think all Igbo/Yoruba subgroups have the same societal values, deities, dressing, food, masquerades, society cults, festivals e.t.c? If this is what you think, then you are very very wrong.

Just like someone told you above, before colonialism, the identity of Igbo & Yoruba only applied to a small fraction of what is today known as Igbo/Yoruba.
The British were the ones who classified all similar peoples under the Igbo/ Yoruba tag. 150 years ago, Ijebu, Awori, Egba, Ekiti, Okun people never addressed or saw themselves as Yoruba people.... The Yoruba identity was meant for Oyo people alone... Same with the Igbos.

The Hausas through Danfodio's fulani conquest were the only ones who were already united before the British came.

Yes there was an identity known as Igbo before the colonial masters came, however that identity did not cover everyone who is an Igbo person today. The Igbo identity only applied to a section of Igbo people in the past and not everyone.

Nsukka, Nkanu, Enuani, Ukwuani, Ikwerres, Ngwas, Ezza-Izzi e t c people never identified themselves as Igbo people before colonial masters came....

Same with Yoruba... The Yoruba identity originally belonged to Oyo people only, but the British united everyone else under this identity.

What beachside is saying is the way Okrikas, Kalabaris, Ibanis, Ogbias, Epies, Engennis, Arogbos, Nembes, Izons e.t.c all unite themselves under one umbrella term (IJAW) even though they speak entirely different languages and have different cultures, food, dressings and customs!

Arogbos & Apois in Ondo state still identify as Ijaws even though Arogbo people speak Yoruba as a 2nd language, while Apoi have completely switched to Yoruba as their mother tongue.

Same way most Ibani people in Bonny & Opobo have switched to Igbo as their mother tongue, but still identify as Ijaws.

Words could be similar like English: I cannot, Annang: Nkarake, Ibibio: Nkanna, Efik :Nkemeke.
Words can also be totaly different like English:feces, Annang:Afid, Ibibio:Uduang, Efik:IfVO.

Ibibio: 1) Ufok mmi ke afit nyin iba. 2) Ufok mmi ado mi
Efik:-1) Ebiet Idung mmi ke kpukpru nyin idu. 2) Ebiet idung mmi edi emi.

Most Ibibios & Efiks Do Not Understand Annang except the have lived in the Annang region, so how can the be dialects of each other Also Annang has 3-4Major dialect that an Ibibio or Efik won't understand 2words. Ibibio also has several dialects like Itumbonuzo, Eket etc.. Efik doesn't have any dialect as far as i know. So again how can Annang & Ibibio including their typical dialects be dialects of Efik?

yes they are similar, they are the originators of the nsibidi that we Akwa ibomites/efiks used, they also play ekpe,bear the same names with the efiks to a certain point but we do not understand their language, atleast 65% of akampa people speak ibibio/Efik as their second language, infact during my 100lvl, our faculty president spoke ibibio most times until I discovered he was actually from akampa, all my coursemates from akampa spoke Efik/ibibio fluently, but the ejagahms in etung and ikom aren't as close to us like their brothers in akampa and always tend to side with the atam people. So it's complicated

yes they are similar, they are the originators of the nsibidi that we Akwa ibomites/efiks used, they also play ekpe,bear the same names with the efiks to a certain point but we do not understand their language, atleast 65% of akampa people speak ibibio/Efik as their second language, infact during my 100lvl, our faculty president spoke ibibio most times until I discovered he was actually from akampa, all my coursemates from akampa spoke Efik/ibibio fluently, but the ejagahms in etung and ikom aren't as close to us like their brothers in akampa and always tend to side with the atam people. So it's complicated

Ejagham has got nothing to do with Ibibio They are partly Cameroonians, same as Efiks. Also Ibibios Do Not Practice Ekpe (Uruan is the only 1LGA in Akwa Ibom State made up of Ibibios that practice Ekpe, because they hosted Efiks for some Centuries and adopted a lot of Efik tradition & cultures) Oronation made up of 5LGA are the only legit ethnic group in AKS who practice Ekpe, and all other tradition and cultures practice by Efik and Ejaghams etc, also they all migrated through Cameroon. There is Nothing like Efik/Ibibio language There is Efik, Ibibio, Oron languages, just like there are Italian, Spanish, French etc.. The Italians you are calling as one identity... Do you know the strong factions, divisions and bitterness that exists within them? Every region of Italy spoke an entirely different language, practice different traditions, values, food, farming e.t.c. Some don't even see eye to eye ... Till now the divisions are still strong, but it has reduced unlike before.


2) Who told you that all the Igbo/Yoruba subgroups only speak different languages but have the same culture? The cultures are related, but they are not the same!
