Topic for discussion.

Have you ever been the victim of automotive crime? Been car-jacked, woken up to find your car missing, or the window smashed? boot open, or the wheels missing, with your pride and joy left on its belly? Or come out of a night club, to find your vehicle vandalized? How about getting to your vehicle, and finding the thief
still there?

If yes, what have you done to make the risk of future occurrence's impossible, or at least minimal? Did you ever catch the culprit?

Please, let's share our experiences!

I've had one experience of attempted theft.

I got to my car, which was parked in Ridley market, Dalston, back in 1992. Only to find a lowlife scumbag trying to hot-wire my ride. He'd ripped the steering cowling off, and was trying to bypass my home-brewed immobiliser. I narrowly escaped doing jail time, after a brief, ferocious scuffle, which ended up with him having a badly broken right leg. It had to be amputated, just below the right knee. I only realised how bad I'd hurt him, when we were both in court, three months later. At the time, I thought it was just a flesh wound.

I felt bad for a short while, especially as he was 18-years-old at the time, but then thought, to hell with him. He was the criminal, and I was the one under scrutiny. I was lucky, I had good friends watching my back, and the supposed witness that claimed he'd watched me break his leg, later changed his statement, which meant I got off.

Never had any more car theft, or attempted theft till date.

I was double crossed at gun point with 5 car robbers surrounding me ordering me to get down along lagos abeokuta express way, Not knowing wat to do, i didn't know where the boldness came, hoping to see how active my v6 engine is, I put the car on reverse crushing the robber standing at the back of my car cos he was caught unaware. I drove in reverse for like 10secs before putting it on drive directly facing the ones in the front. The shot at me, but cos i was approaching them with speed, they were unable to aim straight at me, while jumping off the road. I crushed the leg of another one, and the zoomed of. I didn't drive home straight, rather drove to the police station and kept my car there for like a week in order to clear my tracks. It was an experience i would never forget.

my own case, i think is exceptional.
on 10th sept 2010, I decided to relocate to my new apartment at Ketu. since i will be moving my tokunbo unregistered Toyota Sienna 2009, meant to be sold at N3.5M, to my new residence
why kill 2 bird with 1 stone? i decided to load the toyota sienna space bus with all my stuff, i mean everything that mattered most to me

only to have the car snatched at gunpoint with everything in it. Nothing as painful as losing a laptop with projects worth 2 Million naira in it and an almost completed personal project, to make matters worse, i had my backups in same car, months of late night coding with coffee, all wasted.

They were 2 guys, each with his own gun, and they both looked like "we wont hesitate to shoot"
one stood by me as if we were pals, the other made a U-turn and off they drove.

i tried to get a bike to trail them, as i was about mounting the bike, i saw a bike stationed few meters right in front with a running engine, 2 men sat on it, one held something concealed, in a dark nylon, the way he held it confirmed my fears.

i had to rush down the bike for cover, as soon as they noticed i've seen them, they hurried off.

It's barely a year now, I hope God will help me forget the event.

A couple of years ago,I bought my first car and drove it to my house.Next morning I decided to drive to a mechanic to get the thermostat removed.Got to the mechanics workshop very early and parked outside the garage waiting for the mechanics to arrive,so I could do my business and then go and register the car.I was sitting in the car with the keys in the ignition while listening to the radio, when I noticed four young brothers walking towards me but I paid them no notice.
The next thing I noticed was the four guys had taken strategic positions around the front and back of the car and that one was standing beside the drivers side with a sawn off shot gun which he pointed menacingly at me and poltely asked me to step out of the car.
One of the other boys took me to a mud filled gutter at gun point and asked me to get into it,The filthy water in the gutter reached me to my knees.
While this was going on another one of them got into the drivers seat and started the engine while at the same time flinging open the four doors of the car, once the engine started and was running well, the other three guys started shooting into the air, while the guy behind the wheel moved the vehicle forward and the other three jumped in and the car zoomed off, while I aws left standing in the gutter.
To cut a long story short,I never saw that vehicle again, however several cars later,I still have a phobia of sitting in a drivers seat off a car with the engine turned offf.
Moral of the story:NEVER SIT IN YOUR CAR WITH THE ENGINE OFF.You could get jacked!

Wow. I thought I'd had it bad. I've never experienced car jacking, or had a firearm levelled at me. If that was the case, I'd willingly hand over my keys, and whatever else they asked of me,

Thank God for sparing your lives

^^ Guy u lucky o, Thank God!! I had a similar near case of car jackin/robbery along ibadan/abeokuta express, I had just turned off the express @ the shagamu interchange @ 8.30PM and was navigating the ramp to link the abeokuta end i noticed two 'police' men with guns, on closer scrutiny i noticed ther vest were just black poly bags with POLICE painted in white worn over their shirts!!! shocked shocked shocked Omo, by instinct/training/fear of my life/God/luck/ all join, I immediately downshifted to gear 1 and floored the accelerator taking them unawares and scatering them in to the bush!!

I DID NOT LOOK BACK TILL I GOT TO MY HOUSE WHILE THANKING GOD FOR THAT CLOSE SHAVE !!

I woke up around 3 am on the Thursday before Easter to find my car (Toyota corolla) with its small window at the back broken.boot and driver side door wide open.
2 Side mirrors, 1 rear brake lamp, 4 electric windows controls and my ECU gone.

The worst part was that the thief cut the jacks to the ECU from the wiring in the car and that started the nightmare for me.

All parts replaced ASAP (cost at about 60K) purchased ECU - 35K + sockets for the ECU 10K. Now all that remained was installation of the ECU. 2 weeks later having gone thru 12 - 15 rewires and towed the car twice from suulere to Ladipo market and back - NO SOLUTION.

I was considering dumping the car as the rewires all refused to reconnect the 100 + wires, then one day while complaining about the issue in a bar a friend assured me he had a guy who could fix the car.

Invite him now and he showed up. After due explanation find below his plan for the repair;

1. Buy a new set of complete wiring from an identical accidented vehicle in owode. Cost 65 K
2. Tow the car to his workshop
3. Workmanship - 35 K.

I was desperate and agreed, paid for the wires and 4 Hrs later he arrived with 2 black polythene bags filled with wires.

2 days later went to the workshop to check whats happening, see below what i saw !!.

I gave up on the car immediately and said few words and left. To my surprise 2 days later he asked me to come and upon getting there i saw him driving the car around.

He put every thing back together and i have been driving the car around for 4 weeks now and even thru Sundays Flood.

Total Cost of Repairs around 200k. Car alarm installed now and patrolling duty every night.

If that guy comes near my car again. HE IS DEAD MEAT.

6:30pm, cant remember the date or time. But not more than 3 months ago.

I just got a very neat american used nissan maxima from nairaland some months back and was on my way to mowe where an engineer i met on nland built 2 properties for me to check out the finishing.
anyways, i took the sango-papa-shagamu road; and instead of lagos ibadan express way.
of course, the road is loaded with customs and police checking cars all around, but it seems as if that doesnt guarantee much nowadays.
anyways, i accidentally busted my drive side tire because i was over-speeding and ramped into a hole. while changing the tires. then 2 guys on a bike approached. I wasnt sure what they wanted because I was in suit, too fresh to dirty my hand with the jack and tire xchange. I thought they wanted to assist me. And of course, I was going to the site with close to a mil in the boot.
to my biggest suprise, they came down, started staring at me, and i was about to tell them my tire got f'd up if they could help, and that I was gon give them 500 naira, when the other guy, an elderly man, about 50 plus: i would have sworn, he looks like someone who would never steal pulled out a tiny gun. i was there, the site of the gun pointing at me terrifying me; quaking not sure what the hell to do.
they noticed the engine is killed. that i just undid some nuts. and my drive side tire is finished, they cant drive the car away like that.
those useless mumu's just kept staring at me, not sure what to do; the old agbaya shoved me roughly aside, checked my pocket, pulled out my andriod phone, the little cash in it, and removed my keys, and tossed it far into the bush; and they climbed the bike and sped off.

the most annoying thing is that, the road is a very busy road. trucks, commutters are always zooming up and down and nobody came to my rescue.

i spent not less than an hour searching the bush. found the key, removed the suit and quickly fixed the tire. since then, i've always avoided the shagamu road again in the evening. and yes, no matter where i might be having fun; once it is 6:30pm, im headed back to my crib. no more nightclubs, unless im taking my power bike.

PS: can everyone please put the exact time this happened. another incident i witnessed at meiran, lagos, was around 8pm at night.

I havent expereinced car jackers personally but had family members who have.

My dad got jacked in Abeokuta around '87 and had his 1 year old Peugeot 505 taken at gun point. Then in 2005, I think can remember properly now, on my street, My dad and his driver unluckily ran into them mofos, they ordered them out of the car and they got in and drove the car off but luckily the car had one of those immboilisers that cut of fuel supply and the car was found the next day abandoned with the key in the ignition a few streets away. He has also had the car broken into on a few occassions.

My in-law had his one day old car taken from where it was parked and it was never found. Car bought - taken home - next day taken to friends place - parked and locked - go in for 10 mins - come out and car is gone.

@ Sledjama

I feel your pain bro. If you had one wish now, I know you wouldnt care for all the other material things but will just wsh you had your laptop back. I got robbed in Uni one night and got cleaned out, I mean completely cleaned out, even my washing up soap was taken. Luckily I saw the thieves at the end of their robbery and we gave chase with the help of the vigilantes, they ran and dropped almost everything but the first thing I lookd for was a box which contained all my certificates and everything that showed I had been through the four walls of a school since age 4.

@ Siena

Well done for crippling that scum. I always say to people that if someone breaks into my house or tries to take my property, I will inflict the most damage possible to that person if I get the upper hand. They always talk about the law and all but I say to them, in the heat of the moment, I will damage the guy first and then we can go and settle the case in court later. Big shout outs to you, Tony Martin, Munir Hussain, Samuel Quamina, Peter Flanagan and all the other unsung heroes who are reducing the number of scum on the streets.

around 5:30 Oshodi / Challenge going towards Gbadada. Was on the curb side. There where these poorly dressed thugs/beggers. I actually taught they are beggers. There was traffic; normally I'm very observant when on the road. I notied that someone threw out lots of money from his car like 4cars away at the front. But taught maybe he was praised or some popular Owambe guy that just wanted to spray the thugs money.

Then it came to my turn they first acted like beggers and I waived them like I dont have money (because usually i dont give beggers money its shit , i dont 4ucking wind down to do that shit , ) the next thing the guy just changed started hitting my window hard when I loooked again this time he was flashing me a gun shocked , I had 30k in my back pocket and N500 in my wallet lol , and normally in such traffic i do clear my car dont have mobile phones around in visible area. So I showed him my empty wallet with N500 wind down a litle then gave him he took it first. I had a big chain on my neck but he didn't notice i guess but then the rest of them blocked me in the front and was now demanding that i get out of the car and where tryna force open the car. But luckily for me the traffic have moved by then i looked forward and just speed off and drove into the middle part. I'll never drive in the sides whenever in Oshodi traffic again!!! Always middle!

Surprising thing is that everybody in the traffic pretended they didn't see what just happened to me sad but I was lucky still N500 ,

You were happy to have your car stolen, just because your car stereo wasn't working? How much is a car radio, versus the cost of a 1995 Toyota Corolla?
