Folks, not sure if this facility exist anywhere else but in case it doesn't, please see link below to confirm the car you just bought or about to buy is not a stolen vehicle imported from the US.

All you need is the vehicle VIN.

kind of stuff you get when you run this check. This came up using a VIN from one of the vehicles presently advertised on this forum:

"VINCheckSM Total Loss Record

Further information is available through Carfax .  VIN: 1N4BA41E14C802879 has been identified as a vehicle listed in the VINCheckSM Salvage Records.

Date of loss: 2008-09-25
Cause of loss: Collision

You are advised to consult with a certified automotive technician before further considering this vehicle, to include verifying the airbag remains intact.

VINCheckSM is updated regularly as additional information is reported."

Quite a number of us don't fully appreciate Vehicle History Reports (Autocheck or CARFAX) and so still fall victims of dubious car sellers who buy these junks, shape up their bodies and sell to unsuspecting buyers at cut-throat prices. See below for critical official definitions.

Definition of a junked vehicle.

A junked vehicle is one which has been dismantled because it was wrecked, abandoned, or a low valued vehicle that was impounded and acquired from an enforcement agency and is no longer operable.

Definition of a salvage vehicle.

A salvage vehicle is a vehicle that has been wrecked, destroyed, or damaged to such extent that the insurance company considers it uneconomical to make repairs to the vehicle and the vehicle is not repaired by or for the person who owned the vehicle when the damage occurred.

Buyers, beware!!!

Pretty cool, thanks for sharing!
I was shopping for a car 2 weeks ago, and I was amazed at how many cars came up with Salvage titles.
Would not be so bad if the sellers disclosed this fact, and if the price reflected the status. Needless to say, I have decided to bring a car in myself.
At least, I am in control of the process from purchase to delivery. What happens to those who do not have that option?

Little wonder, two months after a vehicle of #1.8M was purchased, you're already looking for a mechanic who would go to Ladipo spare part market to get a junked motor part for your 'new' vehicle.

If you took a loan to get the car or spent your last kobo on it, you don enter WAHALA. Some guys would do anything for money. PITY!

Vehicle History should never be a mystery

"If you were thinking about buying a house, wouldn’t you want to know if it had a damaged foundation, was built in a waterlogged area, was broken into and burgled, had problems that were badly repaired or was much older than the owner claimed?

A vehicle history report serves a similar purpose for buying a used car — exposing past problems — and it’s a must for smart vehicle shoppers."

This is especially pertinent in the Nigerian context where the average car salesman may be prepared to compromise safety for profit.

You may have already bought that car without a history report - You may still need to obtain a report.

'You have to know the past to understand the present.'
- Carl Sagan

Most DMV's and the vehiclehistory.gov refers to people for VIN Checks to a service called VINsmart and some other providers. The service checks for theft, recalls, titles, liens and a bunch of other data points. Instead of just checking on record it pulls from many government databases.

I thought it was a good resource to share!
