A Challenger For The Champion
TEXT: 1 Samuel 17:31-36

"And David said to Saul, Let no mans heart fail because of him; thy servant will go and fight with this Philistine" (1 Samuel 17:32).

Let's count how many hurdles youthful David jumped to defeat Goliath. The limitations of youth. The terrifying size and arrogant threats of Goliath. The collective cowardice of Israel's soldiers. The jealously and contempt of his older brother. The belittling words and veiled mockery of King Saul. Through it all, the young challenger seemed to firmly affirm the Chinese proverb that, "Under heaven there is nothing impossible; all you need is a man with a heart." But David had more than a heart, he had an unshakable, high-quality faith. His faith did not come upon him suddenly, it grew out of a long and steady relationship with the Almighty God.

Poor Goliath! He had made the mistake that most fools make, judging the product by its wrapping. David was small in stature but he was big inside. To quote Sidney N. Bremer, "You will never become a giant if you only make a pygmy's claim for yourself." Take up any challenge that presents itself on your path to success. Press forward with faith in God. Shut out the doubters. Refuse to back down. Your victory is certain.

Quote: "Press forward with faith in God."

Chɑllenge: "To become unstoppable, become unbreakable."

Prɑyer: "In Jesus' name, I say to every mountain, Move!"

Beware Of Dogs
TEXT: Philippians 3:1-10

"Beware of dogs, beware of evil workers, beware of the concision" (Philippians 3:2).

The warning sign on the front gate reads, BEWARE OF DOGS. But the burglar had thought there was only one dog, therefore, he jumped the fence into the house while the owners were out walking their dog. CCTV cameras captured the hilarious scene that unfolded. As soon as he approached the front door, he was attacked by two angry bulldogs. He had invaded their owners' territory and they would take him down. Moments later, the burglar managed to escape, bruised and bleeding, and without his shirt.

Today, domestic dogs are referred to as "man's best friend," but the scriptures generally regard them as unclean, ferocious and dangerous. One character in William Shakespeare's play, The Merchant of Venice, says: "Thou callest me a dog before thou hast cause. But since I am a dog, beware my fangs."

Really, character is everything. So, beloved, beware of unsaved associates you may consider best friends but who are unclean in character, angry in disposition and ferocious in nature. Love the godly, but, "Beware of dogs."

Quote: "Character is everything."

Chɑllenge: "Base relationships on character, not convenience."

Prɑyer: "Dear Father' make me wise in my associations"

A Faithful Friend
TEXT: Proverbs 17:17-19

"A friend loveth at all times, and a brother is born for adversity" (Proverbs 17:17).

"What A Friend We Have In Jesus," is one of the most beloved Christian hymns, but it was God's revelation to a broken heart. The author was Joseph M. Scriven. A day before his wedding, his would-be bride fell off her horse while crossing a bridge and drowned in the water below. Joseph watched helplessly from the other side of the river.

At age 25, he fell in love with another young lady. They had great plans to be married, but tragedy struck again, Elizabeth Roche died of pneumonia. Years later, while Joseph Scriven was sick, a friend discovered a poem he had written at the time to comfort his grieving mother, "What A Friend We Have In Jesus."

Have you experienced the pain of being let down by a friend? Earthly friends are sometimes helpless. Imagine the pains Joseph Scriven must have experienced. But Jesus is "a friend that sticketh closer than a brother." He has grace to help and power to keep. Do you know this Jesus? He loves you and will be faithful to you to the end.

Quote: "Earthly friends are sometimes helpless."

Chɑllenge: "The best friend to have is Jesus."

Prɑyer: "Dear Jesus' receive me as your friend today"

Christ Cares And Cures
TEXT: Matthew 14:13-19

"And Jesus went forth, and saw a great multitude, and was moved with compassion toward them, and He healed their sick" (Matthew 14:14).

Evangelist Billy Graham tells an interesting story in his magazine, Decision. A little child had come down with an aggressive form of cancer and was suffering great pain. The mother, though a Christian, had neither knowledge of divine healing nor faith in its possibility. On a particular stressful day at the hospital, the loving mother wept over her daughter. In deep anguish, she raised her face to heaven and thought, "Oh that God would let me have this cancer and suffer this pain instead!" At that moment, the pain subsided instantly and the little girl calmed down. Tests later revealed no single trace of cancer in the body once ravaged by the evil disease. She had been healed miraculously and was soon on her way home.

Genuine compassion can trigger faith. Jesus has both in good measure. Compassion made Him to heal the leper by a touch rather than a word. His tears before raising a dead Lazarus flowed out of compassion, not despair. If you are sick, Jesus knows your pain. Call upon Him in faith and He will heal you now.

Quote: "Genuine compassion can trigger faith."

Chɑllenge: "Jesus has both love and power to heal."

Prɑyer: "Heal me, O Lord, and I shall be healed"

The Discouraged
TEXT: Psalm 39:1-6

"Behold, thou hast made my days as an handbreadth; and mine age is as nothing before thee: verily every man at his best state is altogether vanity. Selah" (Psalm 39:5).

This was the exact feeling of the great Prophet Elijah when he fled Jezebel's threat. Discouragement comes to all at one time or another. The Police received an alert that a man was about to jump to his death. An officer was sent in on a persuade-and-rescue mission. Approaching the man carefully, he said, "Please tell me five reasons why you should kill yourself and I shall tell you ten reasons why you shouldn't." They talked for a while. At the end, both men jumped into the river. Who would have thought that the smart-looking officer was under depression too?

Discouragement is one of Satan's most effective tools. It means loss of courage, push or drive to succeed. Depression, an offshoot of discouragement, is responsible for rising rates of teenage suicide worldwide. Unsaved youths lack the assistance of the Holy Spirit. Courage dwells in the heart and the heart drives the brain, hands, feet and other body parts to pursue success. Therefore, when the heart is discouraged, progress stops. When David faced problems, he "encouraged himself in the Lord." Be like him.

Quote: "When the heart is discouraged, progress stops."

Chɑllenge: "Partnership with Christ conquers discouragement."

Prɑyer: "Jesus, strengthen my heart to press forward always"

Grow In Grace
TEXT: 2 Peter 3:14-18

"But grow in grace, and in the knowledge of our Lord and Saviour Jesus Christ. To Him be glory both now and for ever. Amen" (2 Peter 3:18).

We conducted experiments on plants in our elementary science. Plants need air, moisture, light and good soil to grow. By removing one of these ingredients, we could observe the effect of their absence on the growth pattern. The plant either did not grow at all or was stunted or the leaves turned yellow depending on which growth ingredient was removed. The Christian life, like the natural life, needs growth. New believers in Christ are referred to as "New born babes." Given the right spiritual ingredients, the babes should grow on to becoming little children, then young men, and finally, fathers in Christ.

God's grace is the essential ingredient of spiritual growth. It is the soil from which all Christian experiences grow. It is the air, the moisture, as well as the sunshine to nourish the spiritual life. Like those ingredients for natural growth, God's grace is free, yes, but not cheap. To enjoy its provisions therefore, believers have to be planted in the right condition. They must use the means of grace: consistent prayer, regular intake of scripture, fellowship and personal evangelism.

Quote: "God's grace is free, yes, but not cheap."

Chɑllenge: "Growing plants deliberately lean towards light."

Prɑyer: "Lord Jesus, plant my heart in your grace. Amen"

Wait For God
TEXT: Psalm 37:7-16

"Rest in the Lord, and wait patiently for Him: Fret not thyself because of him who prospereth in his way, because of the man who bringeth wicked devices to pass" (Psalm 37:7).

Read the imaginary "prayer of the toad," "Dear God," it goes, "You have not granted me fast legs like a lizard or powerful wings like the butterflies. But, O God, I accept how You have made me, I don't envy them the least bit. They have to run after your food but I must wait for mine to come to me. Here I wait patiently for my food today, dear Creator, I know you will send it." That "prayer" is always answered. On one occasion, 150 cane toads were introduced to a new location, 17 months later the population had swelled to 105,517. World population of toads is estimated to be 1.5 billion!

We live in an impatient world. The rush is on to acquire wealth and, become the next celebrity. Everyone is watching another's clock, not his own. The danger to Christians is forgetting that God has a definite plan and timing for their lives. This results in unwise comparison, unnecessary jealousy and unhealthy competition. Rather than join the rush, wait on God in prayer. Like the toad, you will not be disappointed.

Quote: "We live in an impatient world."

Chɑllenge: "God has a plan for your life."

Prɑyer: "Fix my eyes on you, Lord, Not others"

Peace For The Perfect
TEXT: Psalm 37:30-39

"Mark the perfect man, and behold the upright: for the end of that man is peace" (Psalm 37:37).

John Dryden (1631 - 1700) English poet, playwright, and literary critic once declared:

"How blessed is he, who leads a country life,
Unvex'd with anxious cares, and void of strife!
Who studying peace, and shunning civil rage,
Enjoy'd his youth, and now enjoys his age:
All who deserve his love, he makes his own;
And, to be lov'd himself, needs only to be known."

Inner peace is a desirable scarce commodity worldwide. This is a state of unearthly tranquillity made possible by a consistent walk with God. For example, Abraham, Job, Joseph and David had this peace. Walking with God and perfection earn peace. "And when Abram was ninety years old and nine, the LORD appeared to Abram, and said unto him, I am the Almighty God; walk before me, and be thou perfect" (Genesis 17:1).

To be perfect, you must accept Jesus as your personal Lord and Saviour. Then, prayer and praise will become habitual; no anxiety, "And the peace of God, which passeth all understanding, shall keep your hearts and minds through Christ Jesus" (Philippians 4:7).

Quote: "Walking with God and perfection earn peace."

Chɑllenge: "Maintain a consistent walk with God, whatever happens."

Prɑyer: "Lord, help me to be perfect and peaceful"

Building Blocks To Blessings
TEXT: Psalm 32:1-5

"Blessed is he whose transgression is forgiven, whose sin is covered" (Psalm 32:1).

The Irish-born British statesman and political philosopher, Edmund Burke (1729 - 1797) in Reflections on the Revolution in France, said: "Good order is the foundation of all good things." Contrition and genuine repentance is the foundation of a concrete relationship with God. Literally, the foundation is the building system component that interfaces the building structure with the ground, which provides the proper support to keep the structure. Consistently abiding in the presence of God through regular purging and prayer ensures daily building of relationship with God.

For Joshua and all Israel to remain in the blessing of God, there must be daily meditation on the word of God and doing it (Joshua 1:8). A boy whose house was spared while others were burgled by thieves had this to say, "I never missed my quiet time." How solid is your relationship with God? You can begin today through searching of your heart with the word of God, confessing your sins and accepting Jesus as your personal Lord and Saviour. Becoming a child of God brings breakthroughs.

Quote: "Becoming a child of God brings breakthroughs."

Chɑllenge: "How solid is your relationship with God?"

Prɑyer: "Lord, help me to build an enduring relationship with you"

Becoming Greatly Beloved
TEXT: Daniel 10:10-19

"And he said unto me, O Daniel, a man greatly beloved, understand the words that I speak unto thee, and stand upright" (Daniel 10:11).

Daniel was 18 years of age when Nebuchadnezzar invaded Judah in about 606 BC. He was captured and deported to Babylon. God did great things through him over a period of 70-80 years. It was a terrible experience; deported a thousand miles from home.

Daniel was greatly beloved by God for many reasons:

(i) He disciplined his appetite (verses 5 and 8). He would not eat of the portion of the king's meat; he was consecrated to God.
(ii) His choice of friends (verses 6 and 7). Hananiah, Mishael and Azariah were three Hebrews captured and brought to Babylon with Daniel, and they studied, worked and served Jehovah together as friends. Christian youths should emulate this.
(iii) His courage (verses 11 to 13). He had courage to stand for God always.
(iv) His testimony (Daniel 6:10-28; 10:11). God was there for Him at all times because he honoured and feared God.
(v) His God (verses 17-21). He served Jehovah God faithfully hence God honoured him and his friends. Dare to be a Daniel in all circumstances.

Quote: "Have courage to stand for God always."

Chɑllenge: "To be greatly beloved of God, you must be faithful"

Prɑyer: "Lord, help me to be faithful to You at all times"

Missions And Miracles
TEXT: Acts 8:4-13

"Then Philip went down to the city of Samaria, and preached Christ unto them. And the people with one accord gave heed unto those things which Philip spake, hearing and seeing the miracles which he did" (Acts 8:5, 6).

Saul's persecution scattered the disciples of Jesus from Jerusalem and they went everywhere preaching the gospel. They did not go to hide themselves for fear of suffering, but went everywhere preaching wherever they found themselves. Philip was not an apostle, but a deacon, who was chosen and ordained to serve tables, but having used the office of a deacon well, he purchased for himself a good report, and great boldness in the faith (1 Timothy 3:13). The people of Samaria with one accord gave heed unto those things which Philip preached, hearing and seeing the miracles which God did through him.

Obedience to the word of God is always accompanied by great blessings and accomplishments. Jesus gave the Great Commission for all believers to go and make disciples of all nations. Signs and wonders naturally follow the preaching of the gospel as experienced by Philip, all the Apostles in Bible days and contemporary time. You are not too young for mission work. Go to your own Samaria, which is your immediate environment, and God will back you up like Philip with signs and wonders.

Quote: "You are not too young for mission work."

Chɑllenge: "The Great Commission is always accompanied by miracles"

Prɑyer: "Lord, help me to make evangelism a priority daily"

From Foundation To Finish
TEXT: Zechariah 4:6-10

"Moreover the word of the LORD came unto me, saying, The hands of Zerubbabel have laid the foundation of this house; his hands shall also finish it; and thou shalt know that the LORD of hosts hath sent me unto you" (Zechariah 4:8, 9).

Zerubbabel was a governor of the Persian Province of Judah and the grandson of Jehoiachin, penultimate king of Judah. Zerubbabel led the first group of Jews, numbering 42,360, who returned from the Babylonian captivity in the first year of Cyrus, King of Persia, between 538 and 520 BC. His companion was Joshua (Jeshua) son of Jozadak (Jehozadak) the high priest who returned with him.

Together, these two men led the first wave of Jewish returnees from exile and began to lay the foundation and to rebuild the second temple in Jerusalem. Then, the region of Judah was a small province that contained land extending 25 km from Jerusalem and was independently ruled prior to the Persian rule.

Note that the foundation was laid at a politically difficult time and hence, Zerubbabel needed faith and courage to lay the foundation and to finish it. Someone said, "Set goals, say prayers, work hard". Every great achievement started with a little beginning, including skyscrapers. No matter the difficulty you are experiencing today academically or in career, with courage, faithfulness and faith in God, you will finish well and strong.

Quote: "Set goals, say prayers, work hard."

Chɑllenge: "With God on my side, my future is settled"

Prɑyer: "Lord, increase my faith to trust You in all situations"

Maturity Matters
TEXT: 1 Corinthians 14:20-25

"Brethren, be not children in understanding: howbeit in malice be ye children, but in understanding be men" (1 Corinthians 14:20).

Maturity encompasses being aware of the correct time and place to behave and knowing when to act, according to the circumstances and the culture of the society one lives in. A child-adult metaphor is the basis of Paul's exhortations on maturity.

The passage of our consideration must be understood in relation to the various problems in the Corinthian Church. Maturity results from a full knowledge of the apostolic teaching about Christ and salvation, and from correct application of this teaching to everyday life. Maturity is the Church's goal for its members. The mature Christian is known by the following:

(1) He is humble like his Master, Jesus, who was obedient to God up to the point of death on the cross.

(2) He loves even the seemingly unlovable.

(3) He puts positive construction on every situation.

(4) He is not selfish but considerate.

(5) He endures all things.

(6) He puts God first in all things.

(7) He is disciplined in his associations and does things appropriately. Maturity is not by chronological age but by prayers, learning and practice.

Quote: "Maturity is not by chronological age."

Chɑllenge: "Humility is the key to Christian maturity"

Prɑyer: "Lord, give me grace to be humble and mature"

Timing Of The Last Trump
TEXT: 1 Corinthians 15:50-58

"In a moment, in the twinkling of an eye, at the last trump: for the trumpet shall sound, and the dead shall be raised incorruptible, and we shall be changed" (1 Corinthians 15:52).

In the Decision magazine of February 1989, Evangelist Billy Graham wrote that, "The time-setters and date-setters have no authority for pointing out the time when Christ will come." Truly, the rapture will take place but no one knows when. Over the years, many people have predicted the time of the rapture but were disappointed. Our duty, like the Boy Scout movement's motto says, is to, "Be prepared."

There is no one in heaven or on earth who knows the day or the hour when Jesus will come to take His bride away from the earth. No one but God (Matthew 24:36; Mark 13:32). Anyone who tells you otherwise is a deceiver and doesn't understand the Scriptures. On the other hand, many are living in sins and trespasses, thinking that the rapture will not take place. But the word of God clearly warns all to watch against Christ's sudden return (Mark 13:35-37). Where will you be when the trumpet shall sound? "When it sounds so loud as to raise up the dead. Where will you be when He comes?" To be ready, stay on God's Word.

Quote: "No one knows when."

Chɑllenge: "Will you be ready when the Lord shall come?"

Prɑyer: "Oh God, keep me ready for the Bridegroom's coming"

Cry For More Than Crumbs
TEXT: Matthew 15:22-29

"And she said, Truth, Lord: yet the dogs eat of the crumbs which fall from their masterstable" (Matthew 15:27).

A story was told of a man who approached a monarch for financial assistance, he was told to write any amount he wanted, and take it to the bank on behalf of the monarch. Getting to the bank he presented his cheque and the bank informed the monarch about the amount that the poor man wrote was so much. However, the bank was ordered to pay him, since the man believed the benefactor could pay it. The question is, how big is your God? Do you believe He is rich enough to meet all your spiritual, academic and financial needs? Why then are you asking for crumbs when as a child of God you deserve daily bread from your heavenly Father?

Ignorance makes man to limit the ability of God. What you get from God is determined by the level of your faith. How big is your faith? Our God is Jehovah Jireh (our provider and all sufficient One). The Bible says, "But my God shall supply all your need according to his riches in glory by Christ Jesus" (Philippians 4:19).

Quote: "Our God is Jehovah Jireh."

Chɑllenge: "Sustained daily bread is meant for children."

Prɑyer: "Lord, increase my faith to believe you for all things"

Attraction For The Forbidden
TEXT: Genesis 3:7-13

"And when the woman saw that the tree was good for food, and that it was pleasant to the eyes, and a tree to be desired to make one wise, she took of the fruit thereof, and did eat" (Genesis 3:6).

Attraction simply means a magnetic charm that fascinates, allures or entices, which could be in a subtle way either to pleasure seeking or otherwise. It becomes a big problem when one is negatively attracted to things prohibited by God.

Our text above reveals the inducement of Eve by Satan to transgress. The woman, being deceived through the tempter's artful manipulation, gave her husband the forbidden fruit. She saw nothing in its colour that threatened death or danger; it was just as pleasant to the sight and good for food.

Sin is deceptive and attractive. Many people in Bible times were in one way or another attracted to sin. Examples include:

(i) Adam and Eve who brought sin to the whole world.

(ii) Samson who lost his anointing and two eyes, and died with the heathen.

(iii) Achan was attracted to Babylon's garment and died by stoning.

(iv) David invited blood judgment upon his family because of an attraction to Bathsheba.

Temptations will surely come, but we should not yield. Abstaining from all appearance of evil and meditation on God's Word are biblical counsels for victory.

Quote: "Sin is deceptive."

Chɑllenge: "Yielding to temptation results in grave consequences."

Prɑyer: "Lord, help me to overcome temptations on daily basis"

I am bringing the following information to you from the Deeper Christian Life Ministry Lagos.

1. The directive from the Lagos State government as a measure to control the spread of coronavirus is that for the next four weeks, no religious gathering should have more than 50 persons in attendance.
