foolish landlady, you had now put the man in problem because of your wickedness, you can't come out to open the door for him with excuses that he should have knock than banging on the door. but you came out to hold him not to go he's work. If i am the governor i will free the man to show others that there's limit to what you can do to your tenant. your tenant is not your house boy so don't try to control him. if you don't like he's presence in your house refund and give him 90 days to pack out with court backup. your on business transaction with your house and your tenant is the patronizer not your maid. no landlord in dead land

Not up to a wk he came to served me quit notice dat since I moved in other tenants don't respect him anymore. I no even send am. he start sending pple to me to c if I will send dem to beg him but I v already made up my mind to leave even bfor he served me. one tenant called one time n said dey are missing me dat d landlord has become more aggressive toward dem since I left n dis r same coward scared to talk wen I was talking.

Anger destroyed two people's lives.

First of all, if Mr Lateef had only been a little bit more patient, he wouldn't be in police custody facing a murder charge.

If Mrs Landlady had also just come out when the banging continued, and gave Mr Lateef a piece of her mind before opening the said door for him, she might just still be alive.

How should they have resolved this issue? Supposing Mr Lateef indeed desperately needed to leave the house before 5:30, all he could have done was shout it rather than continue banging on the door or making threats. Many of us get angrier if someone threatens us. Maybe when Mr Lateef threatened to break down the door, Mrs Landlady decided to prove that she was more stubborn.

Mr Lateef should have just shouted, "Ma'am, please, I need to leave now. It is an emergency". Banging the door probably made the landlady resolve to teach Mr Lateef a lesson, and when he threatened to break down her door, it made her even more determined to call off his bluff.

Now, the question is: is the landlady's daughter who is now an eyewitness not strong enough to oversee the issue of opening and shutting the door?

According to her account, Mrs Landlady (her mother) was saying that Mr Lateef shouldn't have banged on the door. I am taking it that this daughter was trying to prevail on Mrs Landlady to open the door for Mr Lateef, but Mr Lateef had created a wrong impression by banging rudely on the door in the first instance. Then, Mr Lateef left with a promise to come back and break down the door.

Another question: why was Mr Lateef so angry? Had he had an altercation with the landlady before the issue in dispute? Even if Mr Lateef had an emergency, why was the need to bang on the door to show that he was in a hurry? Are there no better and more civil ways of dealing with such an issue? If Mr Lateef was indeed in a hurry, or had an emergency to deal with, how come he had enough time to escalate a simple issue? Did he think that if he broke down the door, his landlady would just hand him the keys and would not delay him by fighting him and thereby eventually wasting his time?

This is tragic.

Many Nigerian men get physical with women(partners) and feel justified.. A way of discipline.

P.S: Kudos to you for handling the confrontation you guys had with calmness and maturity. He was actually baiting you to see if you'd go physical on him...

When tenant was banging and knocking the door, mama didn't come out but, when the tenant broke the door mama came out and held his shirt.

good talk. I think the tenant will regret that push for a long time especially depending on how far the lady's family are willing to take it. It doesn't pay to allow yourself to be provoked. Some people already wish to die, they are just looking for people who will push or fight them n and be scapegoats.

Absolutely. Now, according to the report, "Lateef was in a hurry going to work at 5am". Now that the police arrested him, who will go to work for him? From there he will be remanded in Prison pending advice from Department of Public Prosecutions (DPP) because i am certain the police will arraign him in a magistrate court, and they cannot try that matter hence must seek advise from DPP, on the murder or possible manslaughter case he may be charged! By and large, this is the end of his living in that compound. He may change residence. Change his children school. change his lifestyle. That is if he is availble to do that o. The Police/judiciary will alter his life pattern. How will he face himself remembering all he needed to do was either exercise patience or politely beg for assitance in opening the gate.?
So many times some people are very aggressive, and until someone is hurt or even dies before they realise their error.
Lesson: Patience is a virtue. Cultivate it. When someone abuses you...God punish you...e no go better for you and all of that...he is looking for a fight or trouble. Trouble he may not withstand. In such situations try and laugh it off. Walk away if possible. All the abuses them don they abuse us, I haven't seen one hurt it has caused. Wisdom is profitale to direct.

God bless you. Some people live for trouble. You've got to be calm so you don't bring down yourself to their level. I've never seen anyone dying from verbal abuse or insults.

And I have been there for 4years .
We do things as if am part of the family..

I was preparing to go and ginger my landlady this evening for slapping my girlfriend but I am now having a second thought with this news. Violence is not always right.

My brother, jst avoid her. Its nt even advicible to stay in same compound with ur Landlord/Landlady.

You people don't get the message. Both the landlord and the tenants agreed to lock the gate by 11 PM and open 5:30 AM this for their safety.

I see no reason why the man didn't inform his landlord about his move so the woman can prepare herself to open for him 5:00 AM that he wanted to go out.

You don't understand the scenario at all.
First the landlady is inheritor and always act as demigod, the tenant leaving the key in her custody is for fear of her majesty.
The law of such door is that every tenant should have their respective key.
From the daughter's statement what are they doing not salvaging the situation but enjoy the show till it led to the scuffle.
I can go on and on, many landlady and landlord are in prison for this door locking issues.
Tenancy is a legal contract with life and property but the so-called lords and ladies make themselves god and the tenant slave
Right now am going through same just as my former place.
