Very true!!! Most houses you see in Maitama, Asokoro etc are EMPTY! A friend stayed in one of those well furnished houses for 5yrs rent free! Till the owner came and evacuated all of them from the building in Asokoro fa! cheesy

I’m also sensing a growing clamour from the poor, which articulates far too closely to envy, which was not a common Nigeria trait, since Nigerians largely admired hard work and admired high achievers. Sadly this envy is growing, probably fuelled by politicians same way they fuelled tribalism for political gains. For the struggling man, few ways are more seductive than the ability to blame alternatives than self for once deficiencies. However, a warning: exploiting class differences as a means of gaining or holding on to power is more incendiary than tribalism.

Most of the unoccupied houses and useless skyscrapers belong to the evil armed robber politicians. They steal so much money but have no common sense as to how to invest and create jobs. They go about building houses like birds. They waste money on women and buy houses abroad but when it comes to investments, the useless cursed politicians will be waiting for foreign investors. That's why you have south African companies like multi choice, mtn, game stores, shoprite, brolly properties all cashing out. Useless country with cursed leaders.

The poor in the West never walk past royal palaces, millionaire mansions, or billionaire spreads, fingering their chins in plot on how to acquire these properties for themselves by appealing to the bigotry of some other more developed Nations using the sentiments of relative inequalities in society. No wonder Nigerian leaders are so keen on One Africa: it’s probably because they view it as an escape clause. They envision going to live and build their mansions in other African nations where class differences are respected, abandoning Nigeria to the squalor of an anyhow, no-boundaries, living.

Good idea, if it is given a legal backing though.

But FG itself is defaulting in this area, earlier this week (sometime even earlier than that), I read of abandoned buildings from the time Lagos was the capital that FG has refused to hand over to the Lagos government. I hope they can start from there before moving to unoccupied private buildings/houses.

It CANNOT get legal backing. It's against a fundamental human right of every Nigerian: the right to ownership of property

Have you heard of real estate market? Those houses are up for sale or rent. But no one is coming forward to buy or rent them at the rate that the developers deem reasonable.

The Govt should force, encourage, train Nigerians to stop investing in abandoned houses, lands and hotels due to selfishness, being self centered and comfort zone mentality... it has never grown any nation.

Invest in factories that mop of thousands of employment, alongside more income than a dormant building or empty land can generate.


Problem is "where is the power or electricity to run the factories"? No serious investors will rely on generator to run a company.

If you are not a thief, you struggle to build sprawling mansions, and you won't lock them while others are kept outside.
Housing are duly taxed abroad and unnecessarily empty houses should be over-taxed as a deterrent.

Nigerians should strive hard to become a people with long-term brains not a short-term brains people. The mousetrap primed with choicest cheese is the virtual perfect metaphor for the futility of quick easy gains. Government needs to buid public housing as well as encourage people to grow their villages by investing in the rural arrears. A classless society leads individuals to atrophy of aspirations, which addles long-term progress.
