Yahaya Bello, governor of Kogi state, has announced the death of his mother, Hauwau Oziohu.

If the writer believes the second sentences in bold and confirmed that the first sentence in bold face is true; then Yahaya Bello is correct concerning his age. Checking the picture where he was being carried by his mother, he should be around 4 years, that picture of his mother did not look like a woman of over 50 years.

The only age that may not be correct is the mother's age. If Yahaya Bello age is incorrect going by the writer of this article and the attached picture, he must have overstated his age, that is, he suppose to be around 41 years.

My opinion

1.It is possible that mum had Y.B at 57...menopause can end at 56/7.
2.It is possible mum did not know her real age. Nigerians of the older generations, unless they were lucky to have someone write their date of birth down, (or in very rare circumstances, get a birth certificate..not common before 1960,and even after)don't know their actual date of birth...so dates have to be estimated....and estimating ages can be very difficult.

My maternal grandfather died at 87. He may have been anywhere between 80 and 95 years old. He did not know, as he was orphaned at a very young age, and his living relatives at the time were not literate. Even now, there are Nigerians living in the rural areas who do not know their actual birth date...and when they start schooling , they have to use estimates...

3.It is also possible YB is lying about his age.

4.It is very possible that YB does not know his real age too. Especially if he was born in the rural area.(I once asked a village boy, going to school, and all his age. The guy had to think long and hard, before genuinely confessing that he did not know. A village girl I asked said that her father said she was 16...good enough, but then again, not good for things like court cases)

It's not the older Africans but their children. This is common issue in the Northern part of this country where females are married off as soon as they start the womenstruation cycle, say between thirteen years and sixteen years.

From my estimation, Yeye Bello's mum should not be more than seventy five to eighty years. No more than that.
