Congrats to all new GTs.

Prepare your mind for the following:

(1)The coronavirus will most likely affect resumption date. State govts across the nation are banning large gatherings and minimising physical contacts as much as possible. It is clear your orientation will be postponed.

(2) The problem is further compounded by the extremely low oil prices which have not even bottomed out yet. Nigeria is currently producing at a loss with the current prices, and we are not even able to sell our crude. No oil firm recruits during periods of low oil prices. NNPC boss has emphasized the need to cost cuts to.produce at current prices. Most companies fire or place employees on furlough. So the orientation will be moved to much later date when or if things stabilise.

(3) You are yet to receive official appointment letter. You have only received a notification of success. By law, no company is not legally bound to recruit any candidate that has not yet received an offer letter. Even with official letters, there has been several cases where govts or insitiutions withdraw offer letters even after resumption with no consequences. So the current case is even more precarious.

I therefore foresee a situation where the new GTs are put on reservation list for several months or years. A worse case scenario is that the recruitment eventually be cancelled or extremely streamlined. Forget sentiments, this is a real scenario right here.

I therefore ask all new GTs to hope and pray this crisis pass as soon as possible. The longer it stays, the less chances you will be recruited.

wow this is unfair for you to come here and pour such negativity saying it could take years, especially as it is all your personal speculation. It may be easy for you to say all this because you may not be one of the 1,050 hopefuls who have begun documentation online with a start date of May 1st.

I pray that at worst the start date for GT's is pushed to when it is healthy and safe to gather in numbers.

This shows what you know about the whole process. You don’t even know that GTs have already been given official letter or apl. Also GTs are no longer part of the recruitment because they’ve already been recruited hence the federal government notice on recruitments doesn’t affect them. Only your first point is valid.

It pisses me off when people act like they are being realistic and begin to give doomsday prophesies. Did you know that oil prices surged over the past 2 days from $24 to $30 today? Did you also hear that trump said the United States is going to intervene in the price wars cause at the end, the low prices affect everyone? Do you know that Russia will also have to come back to the negotiating table cause the free fall if it continues will cripple their economy? Do you know that the only thing that has slowed down and worsened this price war is the Covid 19. Everyone's attention is on eradicating this deadly virus, because of the uncertainty it brings.

Let the GTs enjoy their victory, they laboured hard for it, if NNPC feels the need to change anything, they will inform them via the appropriate means of communication. As for the EH, we hope the oil price rises, so we can also be contacted. Let's not begin to spew negativity just to act enlightened.

What we should be focused on is conquering this deadly virus. 10 new cases discovered today, I tell you it's getting scary, but we need to abide by the safety tips and minimise social engagements so we can get rid of this thing as soon as possible, and get back to normality.. Cheers!

You are not quite correct. Granted that the world's economic activities slowed down due to Convid-19, but it wouldn't have affected crude oil prices that much if the OPEC+1 production agreements were still in place. The worse that would have happened was that the OPEC member countries would have cut supplies to maintain a reasonable price. The current price drop is as a result of the Russia and Saudis disagreement. And truly, I think Putin is right in fighting this fight. Saudi Arabia is only fighting for the US.

Most of you are only 50% correct. The price of oil is currently being hammered from 2 fronts: the corona virus and the price war between the Saudis and the Russians. The Corona virus is under-cutting oil price from the demand side, while the price war is undercutting oil price from the supply side. To explain further, the corona virus has caused the world economy to be grounded which has impacted oil demand negatively, and caused an over-supply of the commodity. Furthermore, the intentional ramping up of oil production by the Saudis and Russians has and will cause a further over-supply of the market, which will also depress prices. If you get rid of only one of these 2 causes weighing on oil demand, prices will still be way lower than where it was before all these started.

However you dissect it, Nigeria is in for a bleak future. The glory days of high oil price is over. Oil will almost certainly never be sold at $100+ a barrel ever again. The leaders of the country have failed it, with the tacit help of docile citizens.

Read the link below to understand why Corona virus doesn't have anything to do with oil price crash below $30. The oil sector would no longer be sufficient to support our revenue. Though Nigeria is still running on profit because cost of crude oil per barrel 15-18$ but is already re-strategizing for the long term on use of Pension funds for infrastructure development. OPEC might die if there's no intervention and Saudi controlling the oil market(using price power) having cost per barrel below $8.

https://edition.cnn.com/2020/03/20/perspectives/saudi-arabia-oil-market/index.html

Doubleoh7:

This will be my very first comment here and just to correct this misconception. Corona virus is the sole reason why the world's economy is in nosedive right now. China is the world's largest energy consumer and when the corona virus came(which incidentally began with them) their economy slowed down with lots of firms shutting down because of quarantine. This brought about a reduced demand for energy/crude oil. Now steps in OPEC, which by virtue of their existence as a cartel and their informal agreement with Russia, toggles production volume in relation to energy demand in order to maintain high crude price. But at this point, Russia refused to play with OPEC in reducing production output in order to maintain high prices hence the reason why the prices are dropping drastically. Saudi Arabia being who they are and having one of the lowest production costs per barrel in the world, are ready to keep flooding the market and crashing the prices further until they bring Russia to their knees and they come back to the table to agree(knowing fully well that Russia is also facing USA's economic sanctions already and may not be able to hold on for too long). However, with China claiming no new cases of Covid-19, firms previously shut down will commence operations, demand will gradually start building back up and as soon as other countries get out of the Corona induced lockdown, prices will eventually build back up as global demand will increase again.

Congratulations, you are 100% correct grin

Guys, abeg I am sorry. The lashing is too much and unexpected.

I wish everyone the very best. Wish GTs and EHs success.

I digress: Just to contribute on the ongoing debate

The oil price drop is caused by two factors - oversupply by Saudi is the highest driver (like 70% of the cause) followed by low demand due to the pandemic. Saudi has promised to push in more barrels in April so expect even lower prices in April. The next OPEC+ meeting is not likely to hold anytime soon at least until June. So expect sustained low prices till at least June. CNN has also reported the pandemic may last for up to a year. Hopefully mankind will discover a vaccine before then. So oil prices is not gonna rise in weeks.

Even without oversupply, oil prices wouldn't have gone above the 40s due to the pandemic.

Also, the cost of producing oil in Nigeria is one of the very highest in the world, between $25 and $35 depending on the area. Whoever said $15 is not familiar with the Nigerian oil industry. Nigeria is currently producing literally at a loss. Also remember that we are not able to sell our crude as we are outpriced in the international market by lower cost producers like Saudi and Russia. So Nigeria isn't making any money right now. Worse still, the ECA is almost empty. Hard times ahead.
