Nigerians cannot believe that anyone can give them stuff without getting something back. A couple of years ago I wanted to give some money to a woman struggling to pay her bills in hospital after giving birth. To my surprise her husband told her to refuse on the grounds that it was diabolical help! Gadzooks!!

If you drive in Lagos, you even get curious looks from some drivers when you let them have a right of way. It is a horrible way of thinking.
