I nodded as the line was disconnected. Maybe if I played everything right, there would be no problem. I would not tell Ruth, so how would she get to know?

The deed had already been done and the best way to manage it was to keep it as a secret, if need be till eternity, I resolved.

I soon got her text message. She lived at Ogba. I decided that I would go straight from work the following day to pay her a visit. That was what I did. By few minutes after six in the evening, I was knocking at the door of her apartment.

The door was opened and a young lady looked at me enquiringly.

‘Good evening. I’m Frank and I’ve come to greet Madam Judith.’

She smiled and opened the door wide. ‘Oh, please come in.’

I entered the apartment. In the sitting-room, Judith was breastfeeding the baby. She smiled up at me.

‘Hello, you finally made it,’ she said.

‘Yes. How’re you ma’am, and how’s the baby?’

‘The baby is fine. Sit down.’

I sat comfortably on a seat. The room was cozy and presentable. Judith obviously had good tastes. I was offered malt drinks. After she finished feeding the baby, she handed him to me.

‘Here, hold him. Is he not adorable?’

Gingerly, I took the baby from her. Somehow, I felt proud to be a father. Whether legitimate or not, it was wonderful to carry a baby you had fathered. That was my feeling.

I studied the baby as he slept off on my hands. Truly, he had the same shape of head and facial features as I did. I had no doubt the baby was truly mine.

After about half an hour, I stood up to go. ‘Accept my heartfelt congratulations, once more, madam. I pray that the almighty God will make the child grow in grace and in His will.’

‘Thanks, Frank. Thanks for coming.’

I had a feeling that the presence of the young lady who was probably her relative prevented Judith from talking intimately with me.

I nodded and left the place. Even as I drove to Ilupeju, the image of that cute baby boy remained in my thinking. What a cute baby.

How I wished it was Ruth that had given birth to the baby.

On getting to the Ilupeju home, I met my darling wife already at home.

‘Hello, darling. How’re you today?’

‘Fine. The traffic must have been terrible.’ She glanced at the big gold-plated clock in the sitting-room.

‘Yes,’ I replied. ‘The hold-up between Ikorodu and Ketu was dismal.’

We moved up to our bedroom upstairs.

‘Have you heard that Aunty Judith has given birth to a baby?’ she asked.

My heart started thumping. ‘Has she?’

We moved up to our bedroom upstairs.

‘Have you heard that Aunty Judith has given birth to a baby?’ she asked.

My heart started thumping. ‘Has she?’

But how did Ruth get to know? Then, I remembered that Judith was our former boss at Apezlinks.

‘Yes,’ Ruth replied. ‘She called me this morning to inform me. We’ve got to see her and greet the baby.’

My heart was still thumping, but I managed to keep a cool mien.

‘Yes. Congrats to her for the baby.’

We entered the bedroom. I removed my canvas shoes and changed from my jeans and t-shirt to a light-blue, cotton pajamas.

‘She also said very soon, she and the father of the baby will be tying the nuptial knots.’

I raised my brows as I felt blood leaving my veins. ‘She also said that?’

‘Yes. It will be lovely to see her marry, won’t it? A nice woman like Aunty Judith should settle down with a good man. I will gladly attend her wedding.’

It was one topic I didn’t like, but I had to pretend to like it. ‘Yes, indeed, it will be a great thing when Ms. Judith finally settles down with a man.’

‘Maybe this Saturday, we can pay her a visit.’

I nodded. ‘That will be okay.’

On Saturday morning, Ruth and I decided to visit Judith. Ruth gave me the address Judith had sent to her. All along, I pretended that I didn’t know where Judith lived.

I drove the Mercedes Benz while Ruth was perched to my side. At a point, I asked an ‘okada’ rider the street where Judith lived, just to drive home my point.

The same young lady that opened the door for me the other time was at hand to usher Ruth and me inside the apartment. I was relieved when she greeted me as if she didn’t know me before.
Judith was glad to see us.

‘Hey, Frank is more handsome than ever,’ she commented and turned to my wife. ‘I can see that you’re really taking good care of him. It’s good to be married, you know.’

‘Yes o,’ Ruth replied gleefully. ‘If I don’t take good care of him, who will?’

Judith entertained us with sumptuous food and drinks. Along the line, she handed the baby to Ruth to carry.

‘Oh, what a cute baby,’ Ruth gushed as she stared into the eyes of the baby boy.

‘Yes, he takes after his father,’ Judith replied.

‘Oh, what a lucky father he is. He should not waste time in marrying his baby mama and taking care of mother and child.’

Judith smiled while I remained mute. My mouth was dry.

Oh, what a cute baby,’ Ruth gushed as she stared into the eyes of the baby boy.

‘Yes, he takes after his father,’ Judith replied.

‘Oh, what a lucky father he is. He should not waste time in marrying his baby mama and taking care of mother and child.’

Judith smiled while I remained mute. My mouth was dry.

Before we left, Ruth gave the bag containing baby products and other gifts to Judith.

‘On behalf of the two of us,’ Ruth said. ‘This is for the cutest baby in town.’

Ruth was staring at the baby while she handed him to his mother. Judith stole the moment to wink at me. Whatever that meant, I made no response.

‘Thanks you so much,’ Ruth said. ‘If I were Catholic, you will be his godmother while Frank will be his godfather.’

Ruth smiled at the joke while I could only manage a grin. We left the place. Even in the car, while I drove home, Ruth kept talking about how cute the baby.

‘I wish I will have a baby as cute as that,’ she said. She turned to face me. ‘Don’t you wish you’re the father of such a baby?’

This time around, I smiled. Inside me, I felt proud my baby was regarded to be so cute.

‘Yeah, but don’t you worry,’ I said, still smiling. ‘I’m sure the baby you will give me will be cuter than that.’

On the eight day of the baby’s birth, Judith sent a message to me that the baby had been christened Francis Ayodele Aka. She also sent some pictures of the boy. Now,

I decided to keep the pictures and saved it on my phone and memory card.

When the baby was a month old, some pictures were also sent. The same thing was repeated when he was two months old and three months old respectively.

When the baby was six months old, I got a surprise news from Judith.

‘I will be relocating to London with the baby,’ she said.

‘Really?’

‘Yes. I’ve got all the papers. Next week, we’ll be traveling.’

‘So soon?’ I could not hide the surprise from my voice.

‘Yes, it is meant to be a surprise.’

I felt she was leaving with a part of me. I meant this. For about nine months now that Ruth and I had married, she had not yet conceived. Initially, I had shrugged it off, but in the last couple of weeks, I had started to get worried.

I felt she was leaving with a part of me. I meant this. For about nine months now that Ruth and I had married, she had not yet conceived. Initially, I had shrugged it off, but in the last couple of weeks, I had started to get worried.

Why could she not conceive? To me, nine months was long enough to wait for conception. She didn’t appear worried about it, but I felt something was wrong somewhere.

‘You’re going with the baby?’ I asked Judith.

It was an unnecessary question. Would she travel abroad and leave a six-month old baby behind?

‘Of course. Why don’t you come around and say nice farewell to him?’

I nodded to myself. Apart from the first week of his birth, and apart from his pictures, it was months ago I saw him. ‘Okay. When I close from work today, I’ll be there.’

She seemed delighted. ‘See you, then.’

I sighed as I disconnected the line. At the close of work, I drove from Sagamu to her Ogba residence.

She was the one that opened the door.

‘Hello, madam,’ I greeted.

‘Hello, Frank.’ She came to give me a hug.

‘How’s baby?’

‘He’s sleeping. Come and see.’

She took me to her bed-room where the baby was cuddled up in bed. I stared at him briefly and smiled.

‘You’ve not come around to see him for about six months,’ she said accusingly but gently.

‘I’m sorry.’ I looked like I really meant it.

‘You’re forgiven.’

‘Thanks, ma’am.’

I nodded at the baby and returned to the sitting-room. She was on my heels. ‘You’re really traveling next week?’ I asked.

She smiled. ‘Of course. It will be good for Frank junior, won’t it?’

I nodded. ‘I guess he’s a lucky boy.’ I sat back relaxingly on a couch.

‘What do I get you?’ she asked.

‘Anything.’

She left the sitting-room. About a minute later, she was back with a tray containing a pack of fruit juice, a glass cup and a small bottle of ground nuts. She set a stool before me and put the tray on it.

‘Thanks, ma’am,’ I muttered.

‘Can you do me the favor of dropping that ‘ma’am’ and ‘madam’ stuff?’

I looked surprised. ‘Well, I …’

‘Just Judith will be okay.’

I tried a grin. ‘Well, if that’s what you want.’

‘Yes, that’s what I want.’

I grinned again. ‘Okay, ma’am. I mean okay, Judith.’

She smiled encouragingly. ‘How’s your wife?’

‘Oh, she’s fine.’

She nodded. ‘I guess she’s smarter than me.’

I looked at her curiously. ‘What do you mean?’
She allowed some seconds of silence. ‘She’s smart to have you all to herself.’

I slowly put the glass cup I was about to lift to my lips down.

‘I still don’t understand you.’

She smiled again. ‘Oh, come on Frank. I was supposed to get you before she did. I was supposed to become your love before you talked to her. I guess I dilly-dallied and lost a golden opportunity.’

I opened my mouth. ‘But all that existed between us was official cordiality.’

‘That was what it looked like, but I wanted more than that. At a point, I was wondering if you were a real man. Weren’t you a man? Didn’t you understand when a lady wanted a man? I had hoped you would get the message.’ She sighed.

‘It was either you didn’t get it or you ignored it.’

I was amazed. ‘That can’t be. You only needed me to donate something vital, and I did so, there’s nothing else.’

‘There is. There has always been.’

I opened my mouth in awe again. ‘I can’t believe you. You’re older than me. You were my boss!’

I opened my mouth in awe again. ‘I can’t believe you. You’re older than me. You were my boss!’

‘Yes, those are facts. They can’t erase the feelings I had and still have for you all the same.’

I shook my head. ‘Well, it’s late. Perhaps, if I had known this before I talked to and married Ruth, it could have worked out. But now, I’m married.’

She nodded. ‘It’s late, but not too late.’

It was my turn to shake my head. She ignored my implied dissension and moved closer to me on the couch.

‘I still have feelings for you, Frank.’

I sighed. ‘But, I’m married now. I believe in fidelity and have never cheated on her.’

‘Does my feeling mean nothing to you?’

Her right hand rested on my laps. I was supposed to shake it off but I couldn’t.

‘There’s already a bond between us, you know.’

I knew she was referring to the baby. ‘Yes, but let’s put that behind us.’

‘But, I can’t. Honestly, Francis, I’ve tried to do that, but I just can’t.’

Maybe she should try more, my mind said.

Before I could say it out, her hand gently rubbed on my thighs.

‘Give it to me as a parting gift,’ she said.

I was puzzled. ‘Give what?’

‘You’re a man and you should know.’

I shook my head slowly. ‘But you know that will not be right, Judith.’

She smiled wanly. ‘Right or not, I want it.’

I sighed again. Her two hands were now on my laps, moving seductively. Maybe there was no harm in doing it just once, my mind thought. She was mature and she didn’t look like the type that would let her tongue loose. Judith appeared to be the discrete type.

She must have sensed my dimming resilience. Her lips came for mine and I could not resist. I found myself responding positively to her overtures. We finally ended up in bed.

Several minutes later, I quickly dressed up as dusk was approaching. Ruth, my darling wife, must not suspect a thing.

‘I’ll be expecting you tomorrow afternoon,’ Judith said, a look of contentment on her face. ‘You will come again, won’t you?’

Several minutes later, I quickly dressed up as dusk was approaching. Ruth, my darling wife, must not suspect a thing.

‘I’ll be expecting you tomorrow afternoon,’ Judith said, a look of contentment on her face. ‘You will come again, won’t you?’

I grunted without saying a word.

‘That was a really nice time we had together, honey,’ she went further.

Honey!

I imagined Ruth was there to hear this. I could see how horrified she would look.

‘Okay, bye bye. My regards to Junior when he wakes up.’

I kissed her good bye and dashed to my car. I had already thought of what to tell my wife for coming quite late.

‘What happened?’ Ruth asked as soon as I stepped inside the house.

‘I ran into an old friend at Ikorodu round about and we were having some gist,’ I said. That settled it.

The following day, I closed a bit early so that I would be with Judith on time. It was a Friday.

Knowing the kind of time I kept with my wife on weekends, this might be the last intimate time I would be having with Judith before she travelled.

‘Are you coming, darling?’ she asked when it was about three-thirty p.m.

‘Yes, I’m on my way already.’

‘Good. See you.’

I was with her for almost two hours. We had rounds of intimacy and I wondered if I was not going crazy or something. When I got home, I told Ruth I had a flat tyre on my way home.

‘Oh, darling, that must be stressful,’ she sympathized.

‘You bet.’

That covered up my infamy. As usual, that weekend, Ruth did not allow me out of her sight for one minute. I was stuck with her, but I was okay with that.

On Sunday evening, Judith sent a message that she would be leaving for England that evening. I sent a message back to her to wish her a pleasant flight and to wish Junior all the best.

* * *

Few days to our first wedding anniversary, Ruth was very excited.

‘We’ll mark it in a grand way,’ she enthused. ‘What about taking some days off to be together in a place like Calabar or Obudu?’

I smiled at her. I was not so enthusiastic about the whole thing, but I always tried not to dampen her enthusiasm in a moment like this. It was almost a year that we had married and she had not yet conceived. That was enough source of worry to me.

‘Why that far?’ I asked. ‘Why can’t we just go to Osogbo or Idanre here in the south west?’

She came to sit on my laps. ‘Anywhere you want us to go is okay.’

I decided not to be selfish. ‘Well, if you really want Calabar, it’s okay by me.’

‘No, anywhere my darling wants is okay.’

‘Really?’

She nodded and kissed me.

‘Alright, we’ll go to Calabar, then.’

She smiled. ‘We can go this week Thursday.

That’s a day to the wedding anniversary. We’ll go on Thursday and come back to Lagos on Sunday evening. What about that?’

‘Perfect idea,’ I responded.

‘Don’t worry about taking permission from work. I’ll tell dad about it.’

I nodded. ‘It’s okay.’

From the airline’s website, we made reservation and booking of flight to Calabar. The flying distance of Lagos to Calabar is 354 miles which translate to 570 kilometers. By flight, travelling between 470 and 500 knots per hour (which is between 880 and 926 km/h), it would take less than fifty minutes to take off from Lagos airport and arrived in Calabar.

We arrived the south-south city about mid-day and took a cab to 10 Murtala Mohammed Highway, where we lodged at the Transcorp Hotel. It was a four-star hotel with outdoor pool, nightclub, free airport shuttle and outdoor tennis court, among others. Most times, we remained indoors, savoring the presence and intimacy of each other.

On Saturday, we went out to visit Kwa Falls a waterfall located on the head ways of Kwa River. This river, from where Kwa Fall cascades down basement rocks, is located in the Oban division of the Cross River National Park. There are about 234 steps from the top to the bottom.

It was an interesting sight to behold. We also visited the Tinapa Free Zone and Resort. It is a trade zone to buy duty-free goods. There, Ruth picked some clothing materials. There was no doubt that these were tourist delights.

On Saturday evening, I spent some time to read some articles on-line about Calabar. The original name was Akwa Akpa in Efik language. Since the 16th century, Calabar was a major slave trade port. Calabar is on Bight of Biafra and was a place where between 25 and 30% of Africans transported to America were taken.

Calabar once served as the seat of the Government of Niger Coast Protectorate, Southern Protectorate and Oil River Protectorate. Prominent figures in the history of Calabar include Mary Slessor, King Archibong III, Eyo Ita, Louis Edet, Margaret Ekpo. Hogan ‘Kid’ Bassey, and so on.

On Sunday afternoon, we returned to Lagos. We took an uber cab to our Ilupeju residence. Titi came to hug her as if she had been away for months.

‘Oh, what a fun-filled experience,’ Ruth exclaimed as soon as we stepped inside our bedroom.

I couldn’t agree less with her. ‘You’re so right, baby. You’re right.’

With the number of times we made love on our trip, I believed my wife must definitely conceive.

Three weeks later, when she told me she was having her menses, I was sad.

‘Something must definitely be wrong somewhere,’ I said. ‘We must go to the hospital to see a doctor.’

She still tried to play it down, but I insisted that we must consult physician.

‘Alright, we’ll see our family doctor,’ she said.

‘We’ll go on Tuesday.’

I nodded. ‘That will be okay.’

On Monday, I told Kabir I would be coming late to work the following day. Tuesday morning, Ruth and I went St. Raphael Hospital at Maryland, Ikeja to see the consultant.

‘We’ve been using this hospital for years and the doctor is efficient and reliable,’ Ruth explained as we entered the hospital building.

Just like the case of Judith, this doctor too was a female.

‘I’ll have to conduct some tests on the two of you,’ Doctor Khadijat Alabi said.

She turned to me. ‘As for you, I need to take sample of your semen for some tests.’

I sighed. I knew that there was nothing wrong with me but had to do all these to fulfill all righteousness. Some minutes later, I handed samples of my semen that was spilled inside a small tube to her.

She also ran some tests on Ruth and said we should come the following day for the results. I decided to resume at my normal resumption time at the depot, but to close earlier because of the results of the test.

‘We can meet here at the hospital by four o’clock,’ Ruth suggested. I nodded in agreement. I left my working place by two o’clock. Though I got to the hospital at Maryland by ten minutes to four o’clock, I met Ruth already there.

The two of us sat at the doctor’s consulting room and awaited the medical results like candidates eagerly waiting to see the results of their examinations.

The doctor adjusted her glasses and tried to smile reassuringly.

‘You’re welcome, Mr. and Mrs. Akowe,’ she said.

She opened a file and scanned through. ‘Yes, according to the results of the tests conducted, medically, nothing is wrong with madam. All her reproductive organs are working well.’

My heart was beating fast. Did that mean the problem was with me?

‘The results of the tests on you,’ Doctor Alabi continued, facing me, ‘show that you’re suffering from oligospermia.’

I clouded my face immediately. ‘What’s that?’

‘It is a condition which shows that you have low sperm count,' she continued. "It means the fluid or semen you release during intercourse contains fewer sperm than normal. The sperm count is usually considered lower than normal if what is released is fewer than 15 million sperm per milliliter of semen.’

I was amazed. What was this woman saying? The doctor Judith had introduced me to said nothing like this. Was it not my semen that was used to make Judith conceive and have a baby?

To achieve pregnancy during IVF, you don't need a truck load of semen, that is why it is called in vitro fertilization in the first place. Under the right conditions the practioner selects a sperm cell which fuses with the ovum to form a zygote. So a man with a low sperm count can still achieve pregnancy with IVF compared to natural fertilization.
