Hello everyone - I'm not quite sure whether this is the right section to post this.

Anyways, I currently hold a Master's degree and I also recently gained admission into a PhD program in a UK university but with no funding from the school and the estimated total cost of the tuition and living expenses amount to about #16 million for the 3 years.

So, I decided to come seek the opinion of folks here with better experience if it really worth spending this amount in the long run or should I rather invest this amount?

Thank you in advance!

1. Long term: Use your money to get Canada Permanent residence. For Canadian permanent residence and citizens, it is very easy to obtain full scholarship including free stipends.

2. Short term: Apply for admission and scholarship in US schools. If you dont get full scholarship, you will probably get half tuition discount or full tuition discount.

3. If your reason is because you want to stay abroad, then go for one year MSc in UK in cheap school for September 2020 admission. When you finish, you are guaranteed 2 years Post Study Work Visa and follow up.

4. Dont waste your money to do PhD. Only do PhD if you are given scholarship and you have a clear career path in PhD as it does not guarantee work. There are many unemployed PhD as you are overqualified to most jobs.

Academic tenured jobs are now scarce.

Ultimately the amount you are paid as a doctoral candidate depends on your field as well as the kind of contract you got. But You should expect to receive anything between 1200 euro and 1800 euro monthly. And most of the contract will automatically increase your monthly pay by about 100 euro every year.

Yes, after tax, pension, social contribution and health insurance deductions.

truthsayer009:

Hello, please can you guide me to how you were able to get funding for PHD around 1,700 Euros per month after taxes? That's a lot of money even in Germany especially if you are not in the main cities like Munich. Maybe a link I can read up or something?

Bikonu abeg.

Take it easy man. At the bolded above, how can a KP earn almost #800k which is about £1600 a month without labouring beyond normal; especially given that study visa has work restrictions during school term? What is the the minimum wage? How many hours a week does/will the person work? Let us be realistic here and stop painting non existing mosaic.

Again, how do you compare someone having €100 in Europe to someone having #100m in Nigeria? Are you for real? Nigeria is not perfect regarding structure and functionality as a country but don't overreach on your assumptions. #100m is about £200,000! Please note that not everyone on this forum is ignorant or uneducated or perhaps not well travelled.

Thank you o....Thought I was the only one that had reservations about his comment.

Investments in Education is not Only for pecuniary gains.
Consequently, It's hard to quantify the non monetary benefits it brings.

Again, if you're concerned about the financial returns of this investment, consider whether:
You're coming back upon completion.
You'll seek jobs in Europe as a researcher/Academic.

The pay data for these roles is certainly available on the internet. Nigerian academicians are relatively poorly paid though (for one who'll know he had 16m before studying).

There's a second route though. Consider research interests/topics in areas you've identified as Commercially rewarding and which fit you passions as an individual with the view of knocking out a product/Service from such an endeavor.

You should read the stories of ;

Min H. Kao/Gary Burell (Garmin).
Sergey brin/ Larry Page.
Nikolai Durov.
James Goodnight.
Dr soon shiong.

People who have spun academic interests into wildly profitable products. It wouldn't be easy though.

the society that produced elan musk is not Nigeria but America - did the UK tell you the op will be given residence visa after the phd? i don’t think so, so where will he put all those his ideas after the program? Oworonshoki? hmmm use your brain - enough said!
in uk now if you have a phd as an international you have 10 percent to qualify for permanent resident and for jobs, phd students are highly sought after especially for stem.

to ur 1st question answer yes, I have lived and worked abroad, I cam here very young o utta Uni in 9ja
The minimum wage as it stands is £8.21, this is what you are paid no matter what you do as far as you are above 25 anywhere in the Uk,Ths is the lowest pay even if you live in one Bush. people do an average of 8.5 hours a day some work 12 hours my 9ja people grin grin. so most cleaners do 60 hours a week or let me say odd jobs etc.

Quoting you, 20 hrs a week for a foreign student @ £8.21 is £164.20 a week, that's £656.80 a month. Let's even assume he does 40hrs/week, that's £1,313.60 a month. We don't see how that amounts to N800,000

What rate did you use? It hovers at 10%+ and tax free! You can always check current rates online. What are your interests? Which of the interests has great cost - benefit & low risk etc
truthsayer009:

Yes, I am also worried about this ROI. Every step I take now, I always consider my gains. It made me pessimistic a lot though.

I am also concerned about T-Bills? Does 16M actually make 2M for you in 1 year, I really doubt that. Maybe you can enlighten me more because the Interest rates I calculated a year ago wasn't that much.

Its obvious the OP either made a mistake or he is not aware that 16 million naira is not enough for a Ph.D in the United Kingdom. I observed he has not posted again since he created this thread. Everything concerning travelling abroad don dey enter millions of naira. Even ordinary vacation for a couple for Europe go pass 1 million naira.

Search for "International Vacation Club" here on nairaland, I explained how these million naira costs for travelling can be brought down (but it requires time o). If you want to travel in 2021, 2022 or 2023 that is when it is good to start now.

First of all, #16mil for a 3 yr PhD in the UK? Are you sure?

With current black market exchange rate, that may not pay tuition for 2 yrs in any UK uni.

Please recheck your values.

My answer to your question is a question, sorry: ever heard of anyone who return from a UK PhD and regretted?
I had one in my office. Total waste of money.
She was paid 189k after tax.

It’s either you’re not telling us the figures or your school is withholding some info from u. That amount is too small. You also inadvertently or willingly omitted your intended specialty?? If you’re going to discover the cure for Ebola or Corona... then go for it.

10% means 1 out of every 10 opportunities to get a residence visa - so if you were having $43k and someone told you the chances of you making a profit out of spending that money is 10% - will you invest your money?

guy - don't mislead people here- me talking here I am in the academic world - I know what I see everyday so stop propping this man for disaster
