Dear All,

This is really a great platform for aspiring candidates seeking academic opportunities in UK

While this is exciting, I am also an aspiring candidate and I seek to pursue a Top-Up Masters degree program in the UK .

Although I came across some universities but majority of them are part time programs ranging from 12months upward. Which leads to my concerns - I understand that to get a top tier 4 study visa for a part-time program might lead to some restrictions such as limitations to work in the UK or limitations to bring in your dependents with your VISA.

Please I kindly see some advise as regards the above and also possible recommendations on universities offering a Masters Top Up Degree.

Thank You All.

They are all the same o. I dont know about Ireland. But Canada visa showed me pepper twice.

I tried Australia, fortunately I got a media freelance job which is my dream profession and thats what I am going to do in Uk...

Canada and Australia, I wanted to study Human Resource management or a business course.

Just make up your mind on what you want to do study it. Then do a personal research on jobs.

I think none is easy ... but with effort, luck , prayers somehow you can break through in the UK. Many have been able depending on the sector

If its uk depending on your sector , uk job after graduation is more about skills and experience so make sure during your masters work on any skills that is relevant to your sector , check job listing and use that as a guide to build yourself and your cv

I highly even doubt that you can get a tier 4 visa for a part time program.

Do universities even allow non Eu students apply for part time programs?

Nevertheless, I suppose you’re right.
You won’t be able to work or bring dependents

Hello Mindlog...

I'm happy to read this from you.

I have just been given an unconditional offer to study MSc Social work due to my work experiences in the Mental Health Sector while in the UK for my first Postgraduate.

It's a 2 years program with placements. Can you assure me of getting it easy with my placements throughout my 2 year program in Mental Health Sector?.

Thank you.

Mindlog:

I presently work in a psychiatric hospital as a mental health worker, so I felt since those who would go through either the one year or two year masters program in my intending course would still get to become members of the same British professional body irrespective of duration of program upon graduation and moreover I intend utilizing my weekly 20 hours working in a mental health facility which am already used to, that serving as a paid placement for me. grin

All possible schools
Cos Canadian uni denied me admission

I didn't want to take chances
Once I found out application was free I applied to as many uni that fell within my range of tuition

Nah your type go soon make them introduce application fees.

There’s no need applying to more than 4 unis. The fact that is free doesn’t mean you should abuse it.

Lol @ Methuselah. Thanks for the heads up

I still need a word of advice.

Here is my profile; BSc Biochemistry, PGD Business Administration, Cisco Certified Network Associate.

Work Experience: 10yrs (8years Coordinating Sales for a marketing agency to a Telco company, managing a team of 13peeps, 1year plus as Manager of a night Club, 3 months as Business Consultant for a Marketing agency).

Study plans: Thinking of settling for an MSc in Big Data Analytics or Data Science. Was considering an MBA before now, but from perusing this thread I have realized Health Science or IT is the real deal. My challenge is I don’t have experience in IT despite my Certification.

Advice and suggestions would be greatly appreciated. Many thanks

If you are going for Big Data or Data Science, first learn Computer architecture and the basics of programming online: from that you would be conversant with how computers work and interact. After that, try learning Python programming language or R programming for data analysis.

I'm a bit surprised and baffled that even with the 2 years post study policy some people are still painting a very nasty picture of life in UK. I want to state it clearly to those who are easily swayed or discouraged that you're 100 times better off in the UK than Nigeria and 10 times better off than other countries and i kid you not. The two year post study will help you secure a more reliable job because most firms are looking for stable employees. Life in UK is not the same as it were a couple of months ago, in fact you'll easily make back millions you spend on your tuition and much more doing casual jobs and if you're lucky enough to secure a white collar job your company may file for permanent resident status on your behalf which will enhance your chances of getting a better position and even citizenship. I'm not saying it's gonna be easy but it's worth every of your penny and trust me there's no better place in the world at the moment you'd rather study at. Just go with a plan and stay focused. Thank me now #winks

There is no evidence that PSW will help people secure reliable permanent job, very few will but many will not.

How is that possible? Let's not give people false hope as companies don't get involved in your residence permit application, that is what you do yourself if you have a permanent position.

No one said life in Nigeria is better & no one said the two years post study visa ain’t valuable.

We only said people should plan accurately.

No company can file PR for you, don’t mix things up. They can only sponsor your TIER 2, which will lead to ILR , then PR & Citizenship. Now most companies only file 3 years for you , which is not enough for the ILR requirement (5 yrs). So you still have to hope for them to renew your Tier 2 by working hard & showing them that you’re an asset.

British citizenship is not an easy task.
If you can tell me any student in the U.K. that has gotten citizenship the way you just “proclaimed”. I will send you £50 straight now! Then PR £25 quid. Just one person o, not 2.

People from Caribbean & other countries that came to the U.K. since 90’s are still battling to get PR even not passport, & you a student will come and get it JLT.

Let’s be realistic please.
Getting PR in the U.K. takes ages, like yeaaaaaars & you have to be 100% genuine. In the case of that you have not defaulted any immigration rule. It’s like trying not to break raw egg.

How many international students even stick to the 20 hours a week rule?

Yes you can get back your money from menial jobs but your body go hear am las las. At the end those menial jobs may not even help you to pursue a career in your area of studies.

I’m not discouraging anyone but I think it’s only right to be realistic with people, so they can also brace for the worst. U.K. is just only easy to get to because they’re after your money & nothing more. They cannot stop international students from coming because they’re the ones supporting the system with fees etc

That’s the thing.

Like I said earlier, internationals tend to think two years is better because it buys them more time per say.

Well it does, to some extent but it’s not really worth it in the long run.

What internationals don’t understand is that even if you do 2 years Msc, if you don’t have employable relevant skills/experience,Nigeria will be awaiting you.

EU/British people barely do 2 years.
Universities are cashing out on gullible internationals big time.

Now they’re going to increase IHS fees from £300 to £620. So if they’re going for two years, that’s £620 x 2 which you will pay upfront in addition to your visa fees. When I arrived Uk, it was only £75 per year now it’s going to £620. These people don’t rate us o.

No offence but most people will end up doing menial jobs all through their two years post study visa. They just want blacks to be doing work that their citizens aren’t really interested in eg care work. Sad truth is that many will still go back to Nigeria or use their savings to continue studying.

U.K. is not a bed of roses but once you are here, thinking of going back to Nigeria after all the money spent, will just make you continue drowning in debts to stay back legally.

A friend just got offer of £9,250 instead of £13,750 for one year programme. My guy said no he wants two years which is £14,200 instead of £18k about I had to hold myself to not call him a fool. People should be wise please.

Highlighted is false! And not actually true! I work 4 times in a week and make close to N800k a month without doing any strenuous thing at work! The only tiring thing is that I do basically nothing but just sitting down. I will actually say I am being paid for time spent at work and not for any stressful work done!

You should have highlighted the work you’re into homie, so we can be clear. I was once a social worker and I did not have to do anything. Just sit and watch the elderly to ensure they don’t cause harm. Only time I did stuff was to prepare meals or take them for walks. I was at 11 hours a day earning £9 about. So let’s say £11 x4 days x9 pounds x 4 weeks. That’s about £1600 which is about £760k. I wasn’t paying tax only NI.

So you’re saying that 11 hours stretch ain’t enough to make your body “hear am”?

Okay bro, I see you.

Plus changing pounds to naira to show how much you earn it’s absurd. If your rent is £350 per month (if you’re living in cheap cities), that’s about £170k alone. Then utilities, council tax (if you’re not a student) , feeding , clothing or bills etc.

yes i am a psychologist and hence I work in the mental health setting and me sitting down watching tv and making someone not to harm him or herself and caring out their care plan is not a work I have passion for it ! How does it affect my health? So you expect me to be sleeping 12hrs out of 24hrs a day? See in Nigeria I see bankers working for 12hrs and they are being paid peanut at the end of the day!

My expenses in a month is not above 200k converted to Naira! So what do u have to say? Let appreciate the system! The system is not constructed to make one wealthy but to have a meaningful life!

At times you guys talk off point.

No one was talking about not having a meaningful life or earning.

I was talking about people that come here to pursue PR without understanding how difficult it is.

Plus you can never compare the working system abroad to that of Nigeria.

But kk whatever
