It's quite unfortunate at the same time funny that more people have died in the hands of the Nigerian police and army in this period of lockdown than Covid-19 itself. This includes those they killed directly & those they prevented from assessing healthcare this period.
So one of my patients who is in his 70s has prostate cancer at an advanced stage. His cancer is resistant to the normal treatment we give for the condition, so he was placed on chemotherapy which he takes every 3weeks.
This man lives in Abia state and comes for his treatment in Port Harcourt. So he was due for his chemotherapy this last Monday.
Due to the lockdown I wrote the protocol for the administration of the treatment and sent for him to get the treatment in any hospitals in Aba, but he couldn't get the drug in the town.
So I finally wrote a letter, signed and stamped with the hospital letter headed paper, scanned and sent to him. I explained his condition in the letter and the need for him to be allowed to come to PH for his treatment.
Yesterday he set out to come to PH with his driver, and by 7:30am he was at the boundary. He showed the letter to the security men and pleaded with them, yet they turned him back. Even when he called me to tell me the situation, one threatened to shoot him for making call in their presence. I felt like crying yesterday.
So I want to ask, should people with more serious health conditions be allowed to die because we are on lockdown?
Our governors and government should re-educate these illiterate police and army people that some people should be allowed passage without much hassle
