I won't lie, I support this policy. That is why you have intelligent but not wise, irresponsible people. There are reasons why we go to school and discernment is part of it and that comes with maturity. Today, everybody skips the ladder cos their kids have the edge but when it comes to why they learn what they know, they completely flawed.
In a democracy such policy should be debated that is why we have public hearing as part of law making.

16/17 is perfect.. I'm sure Nigerian parents would still not hear word.

The university age is 16years... Lets leave parents
12 + 6 years = 18
18 + another 6 years is 24years...
most graduate entry jobs are peged at 24years
so if u dont enter university immediately after u will never get a good job

so this age is nonsense... i think it should be 10 years

NOw all of una wey go University at 20 years are you better off... answer o

Bunch of failed policy

Punishment for a crime he/she didn't commit, the parents should be educated about things like this. Since the deed has already been done, they should be tested properly before entering sec school.

It is not punishment but protection. Children should be allowed to go through development stages at a normal pace.

New applications of existing technologies are innovative

My kid bro is 18, took jamb scored 295 Last year, entered uni this year. His maturity is already helping him. He said his target is to be the best graduating student. He has written three scholarship exams this year, he said he plans to get at least two scholarship ... To stop my parents support. The young man spent 1year in workshop learning how to repair oil well head valve, and other petroleum machines... At 18 he has visited over 7 oil well location across Nigeria.

And later got admission to study petroleum engineering, when I look at him I just smile because the young man is position for greatness already.

But those his class mate who came in at 16yrs can't match his maturity and level of exposure.

This recent parents needs to be reoriented they are messing up this kids real time

All ye people, applauding this neurotic move, i would like to ask, would this apply to SanwoOlu's children? When sanwoolu's children come back from the uk with phd at 26; and become your commissioner in that future and your own kids are only just preparing for yet another neurotic move called NYSC, maybe then you would rethink this decision.

Ps: i got into sec school at age 8, Stadium high school to be precise, and i turned out just fine. Married with two kids, and my life did not/was not turned upside down.

I support the policy totally. Some parents are are removing their children from primary 3 to start secondary. How do you explain children as young as 7 and 8 years old being in Jss1?

no offence meant with that what I mean is you need to rethink your understanding of what innovation means

I find Nigerians to be overly sensitive looking for insults where none exists
There is nothing remotely insulting in those words.

So 8years old in primary 6 would have to wait for 4 years before entering secondary school shocked

They should start this from the new set entering KG 1.

Why should there be an 8yr old in primary 6?

6 yrs of primary school, 3 yrs of nursery and 1 yr of prenursery which makes 10yrs if the child started as an infant straight from the labour room.

Lets face the truth, private schools have destabilized the educational system in Nigeria.

I am a private primary school graduate and never did Primary 6 in the early 90's. I know what I missed and how bullied I was in JSS 1. I had to change school in JSS 2 and by choice came back to JSS 1.

A friend of mine whose child is 7 nearly a yr younger than my 8yr old is in Primary 3 in Abj while mine is in Primary 2 in Kaduna even when mine started school before his. My friend is not concerned about anything, he is only happy his child will be on the secondary sch at 10. My friend makes me feel bad that my older son would be through with secondary school at 17. I really desire my child to go through the entire classes of the educational system but my friend cares less. My son's school have a policy of compelling their children and parents to keep the children till primary 6 but parents are unwilling. This situation is alarming.

Those who should skip a class or 2 are supposed to be geniuses who should have a special school or being home schooled.

Tell that to the parents that will want to enroll their kids by all cost, Moreover how much will it cost to swear an affidavit?

But all out elites would take their children to expensive schools that won't take to this new law.

The law is for the masses
It is not a new policy. 2004 National Educational policy had introduced what we called ECCED, age 0-6-12. So Lagos State just implemented it. Am talking as an educationist.

If someone will graduate at 18 and gains admission to school and spend 4 or 5yrs in the university without interruption then this will be ideal. But this is Nigeria were everything is topsy-turvy

Remember, the forged age will be on their waec certificate or is there a way to manoveur that?

Your president swear an affidavit so it's nothing new.

This thing only applies to government schools, the elite will fly their kids abroad or enrol them in a private school, while the poor man child will either learn a skill or stay at home . smiley

Then they finish at 18, write jamb four times, enter uni at 22, ASUU strike extends their stay by one or two years, finish uni at 28, one year youth service, search for jobs one, two to three years , eventually get one that pays forty thousand naira at the age of 31.

Can you tell me how MANY 12 year olds are currently seeking their PHDs abroad?

It's about averages, not exceptions as there will always be exceptions to EVERY scenario in existence (in this instance prodigious and precocious kids).

What works best for the COLLECTIVE (read: averages) should be what is considered.
Agreed that not many 12yrs are seeking Phd program but to say every child has to be 12yrs before seeking entrance into jss1 is not the best even the universities in nigeria pegs it at 16yrs before gaining admission. All I'm saying is that 10-11yrs on the average is still ok to seek admission into jss1.

I don't know why Nigerian parents behave like this, my aunt is planning on changing her daughter's school because she said at 4 years old her girl was supposed to be in primary 1... I preached against it, but las las I have no say in the matter.

It's not a big deal. I started primary 1 at 4 years of age and finished at 10 years. I finished secondary school at 16, which wasn't necessarily too fast in my days, as there were many who also finished at 16. Even though I was physically smallish in my school days, I was never mentally or cognitively deficient.
