Easter: Rivers Govt Cancels Relaxation Of Restrictions For Religious Gatherings

The Rivers State government has cancelled the concession granted to Churches to hold Easter services with their full congregations.

Governor Nyesom Ezenwo Wike, had in a state-wide broadcast on Thursday evening, announced that religious groups would be allowed to hold their full gatherings for the Good Friday and Easter Sunday services.

However, several individuals and religious groups, including the Nigerian Supreme Council for Islamic Affairs (NSCIA) and the Catholic Church, urged residents of the state not to abide by the governor’s directives.

But, the state government, in a special government announcement signed by the Commissioner for Information and Communications, Pastor Paulinus Nsirim, said the decision was taken after due consultations with eminent clergymen and well-meaning Nigerians.

The special announcement reads in part: “The Rivers State Government has cancelled the concession granted churches to hold services with their full congregations.

“This decision was taken after due consultations with eminent clergy men, well-meaning Nigerians and civil society groups.

“For the avoidance of doubt, churches should stick to the 50 persons per service to maintain social distancing.”

I stand with obasanjo.why not allow people to go to their respective works.os un state today discharged ten covid19 patients.na so e take easy to treat n usa Italy n Spain are during like fouls from it.its either the apparatus used in testing them is faulty.or there are malaria patients just like obasanjo said earlier.rubbish

Inasmuch as I would have loved to be in church tomorrow for the Easter service. Staying safe is the best decision.

You can tune in to any live service and worship with.

I will be worshipping with my wife and kids in the house tomorrow.

This goes to show that some of "our leaders" don't think enough before they make decisions. For a serious health issue like this, there should be no leniency on events, religious or otherwise, that could further the spread of the COVID-19 pandemic.

It was a poorly conceived idea from Wike to have relaxed the order in the first place. But I must commend him for not being too arrogant to realize and correct his mistake.

I just hope the damage(s) of yesterday's mass gathering by the Muslim faithfuls won't come hunting us all in the weeks to come.
