The problem honestly is being black and living in this shithole Nigeria. Westerners have so much opportunities. In the Uk, if you are interested in being a marine engineer, there are literally hundreds of companies ready to sponsor your education and provide you work experience alongside. I met a german boy on the ship I worked with. Dude is just 17 and passed out of high school. He told me he just came on the ship to figure out what he wants to do with his life. Our captain then a 28 year old Australian had a ship back in his home country. The problem is Africa. The continent is totally useless and stupid. American marine engineers graduate with their certificate of competency alongside their degrees and due to the jones act have a plethora of jobs. They do not even work outside the US. I can never have children in this hellhole. If I cannot leave, heaven knows I would not procreate. I cannot live through this wickedness and hopelessness and bring someone to it.

The problem honestly is being black and living in this shithole Nigeria - Bro take it easy on nigeria, though bad but not as you portrayed it. The grass is not always greener as expected over the other side.

Westerners have so much opportunities - You think so? i really doubt that from my little experience.

In the Uk, if you are interested in being a marine engineer, there are literally hundreds of companies ready to sponsor your education and provide you work experience alongside - According to some europeans i worked with, they also are complaining of rising unemployment.

I met a german boy on the ship I worked with. Dude is just 17 and passed out of high school. He told me he just came on the ship to figure out what he wants to do with his life. Our captain then a 28 year old Australian had a ship back in his home country - i think they are just the lucky ones you met.

The problem is Africa. The continent is totally useless and stupid - i feel your frustration bro. We all had been there before. Just keep the hope up.

American marine engineers graduate with their certificate of competency alongside their degrees and due to the jones act have a plethora of jobs. They do not even work outside the US - Yes, there certificate is better but i think the industry generally is saturated.

I can never have children in this hellhole. If I cannot leave, heaven knows I would not procreate. I cannot live through this wickedness and hopelessness and bring someone to it. - hmmmmmmmmmmmmmm. seems you are frustrated.
Let start this way-
where do you base?
Are you staying alone or with parent?
what are your future plans? 2/5/10 years from now plans.

Bro, i think you need to think outside the box and go dirty.
call - 08032958671 cassava shaft buyer. They buy cassava peeled brown back. They are in Alagbado, lagos and you can get a sack/bag full for #50 from farms. Even if you have up to a trailer load, they will buy and you can start this even with 20/50k. Also, Obasanjo farms buys in bulk even if it is 5 trailers to feed the pigs.
Start small but think and Aim big.
We educated guys think too narrow. We believe without our certificate, working in office or with computers inside AC, we have failed and let our family down but it is a lie.
Start something, keep yourself busy while you plan ahead with your other plans. The aim is not to be a nuisance to the society by begging for money from family and friends.
Go on youtube and online and study how to rear snails, mushrooms or maggot culture. you will make money from it quitely while still chasing your dreams.
There are many things you can do, am just not in the mood to type jare.
I think i still have some contacts that buys cow gal stones in lagos. Also horn buyers.

All these you can start with low capital

Absolutely not. I have enough to do on my own end. Just let the youngsters know the truth about the profession.

Your best bet is Ghana

Please do you know how much ETOs earn?

Depends on your experience on various vessel, Certificate of competency (most especially from UK) and your bargaining power

Some earns 1.1 to 1.5 million more especially if you are working in a multinational company

Well, in general, the industry is not bad.
Maybe hard to get cadetship, but if you scale through, i think it worth it.
Also, most of my cadets have gotten their COC and now working in different companies.
In the seafarers whatsapp group i am, jobs are posted everyday, of course mostly for officers..
Tbh with you, i can't even count the numbers of offers have got this year alone despite not serious with changing company.
A lot of people around me change jobs easily from topaz to temile to thome to jascon to bourbon to mac falcon to lahama and the list goes on and on.
Such is life bro
Over and out

That's good. Won't mind working on the AHTS or ASD as chief if the pay is right.
Any idea salary for chief?

Haaaaaaa. Bro it's going to be a long walk ooooo.
There are two ways.
Either you go to a marine school, graduate as a cadet, look for sea-term on a ship which is more or less like IT for about 18 months, go and write your professional exam(certificate of competency) and do other peripheral courses and apply for job as a mate or 3rd engineer.
Or
A longer route.
So some ratings courses, apply for job, work onboard as a rating/cleaner etc onboard for 36 months sea term(sea term is the number of months used on a ship, so 36 months may be likely 5 years or more if you factor in going on time off).
After that, go do associate 1 year course and then apply for COC minimum 6 months class after which you can work as an officer.
Shiken sir
What if you have an nd in marine engineering?

What if you have an nd in marine engineering?

Better and easier.
That means you graduated as a cadet.
Now, the best advice i will give you is to apply and get watch keeping license class IV or V for AB.
That way, you will be applying as a cadet and AB and in most cases, it's easier getting AB job than cadet.
From there you work and grow.
I had a good agent that do give me work regularly at CFC, Ph but he died last month.
So painful. Mr Steve (RIP)
Gave me Jascon and Tide water jobs.

no is not an app. hold on. https://www.aopa.org/ then go to training and institute, find a course through online course dont go register in the beginning oo they will ask for Pay for membership. just navigate to course direct, take it, do the 10 exams pass and get your certificates.

I just pmed you again, will really appreciate it if you replied back, thing is marine engineering is a big dream of mine, and although I am currently doing okay as a software developer, I still want to be a certified marine engineer, even if I don’t think I can end up working aboard a vessel.
