Bros show me any of your friends/colleagues/family members/ex-classmates that have died of corona virus? The government/media is just blowing this covid19 stuff out of proportion putting fear in our minds. Remember fear can kill faster than the virus itself.
Even USA that have lost more than 32,000 of its citizens have set up an economy recovery committee inorder to re-open their economy.
Remember there will be a life after this pandemic & the last time I checked, Lagos state is already in chaos.
GHANA JUST OPENED KUMASI AND ACCRA while putting precautionary measures in place. THEY ARE NOT FOOLS.
I dont know anybody who has died but I know people who know people who have died. It is precisely because I dont want to know anybody who will die that we need to keep the lockdown for as long as it takes!

I repeat again...they (Ghana's govt) are fools!! They have just had the number of cases DOUBLE from 600 to over 1000 in just 2 days and in their infinite foolishness they decide to call off the lockdown, Even China that thought they had the virus under control have had over 1000 new infections in the last 2 days from having zero for almost a week. I will bookmark this page and remind you when they are forced to lock down their country again!

Seun:
I remember predicting that the reign of the Coronavirus would come to an end when people started wearing face masks. It is gradually coming to pass. The reason the entire world is in this mess is that the Asians, who produce most face-masks and other personal protection equipment, blocked their manufacturers from exporting them to the rest of the world because they knew that they would be needed to protect their people.

Instead of the West to respond by mobilizing their manufacturers to produce face-masks massively, so that they would be able to protect their people, they started a deceptive campaign to discourage people from using them. The campaign was so effective that people who wore face-masks were mocked and shamed by those who had been brainwashed. People who had face-masks were pressured into giving them away.

Now they grudgingly accept that face-masks are helpful but instead of producing adequate quantities of the quality face-masks that have been proven to be effective - the kind of masks that most Asians are wearing - they are asking people to use less effective home-made masks.
Home face masks can be made effective, just put enough layers of tissue paper inside the mask, ignite a flash and try to blow through the face mask with the flame in front of your face, if the flame does not move, then you are good.

Though remember to wash then frequently and spray sanitizers in front in-between use.

Agreed, it could be looked at as been deceptive, but the main purpose for delaying telling the general public not to use face mask is strategic, this way health workers & hospitals on the frontline who are more exposed can stock up on them, before the buying hysteria by the public.

I've argued in some fora that the government didn't need to lock down the economy. New ways of socializing could be invented- new normals ,like wearing of face masks and hand gloves. In short, face masks are the NEW CONDOMS.

Three key points he made in his speech;

1. Face mask will be made mandatory but the government can't distribute free mask to everyone. Target groups are market women, etc.

2. People should go for locally manufactured mask and leave the N95 mask for medical professionals.

3. Covid-19 will get worse in Lagos state before it gets better. We have not reached the peak.

The use of face mask is a bit more complicated than that. As you said most countries do not have the supply chain to meet demand, and if everyone is wearing, there wont be enough for healthcare workers. I work in a pharmacy in canada and we have not had face mask in some weeks. Canada just started receiving recently and producing.

Let's take Lagos for example with a population of 20 million people and you have to use a mask a day. If 10 million people are using face mask, that is 300 million masks in a month. China has stopped selling, Aba cant produce that number. Remember that is just lagos.

As much as it will reduce the spread, it's a supply chain nightmare and that is why people have been asked to make theirs at home, it may not be so effective, but it's better than none. And for the business minded people, this is a perfect business opportunity, you are sure of a 300million demand in lagos alone for the next few months
Reusable and washable face masks will be okay for people that are not caring for covid 19 patients.

I can remember one nairalander saying that face mask doesn't do anything, and to my surprise he even said scientist claims mask doesn't prevent coronavirus. He had 300 likes.

This is to tell you the type of people we have on Nairaland.

You see, some people went to school and they became graduates, but don't have that thinking faculty to profer a solution when the need arises.

I also came about a thread where a guy was kinda seeking for people opinions on how to curtail the spread of COVID-19, but still the moods keep feeding us with Abba k.

We ain't ready to progress in this country. The governments ain't to be blamed.

Not very effective, but should be okay. And besides, we have no other option.

This is going to create an unwanted sense of fear.

People should be allowed to wear facemasks by choice

Mask stops people from spreading it, but doesn't protect the wearer. There were confusions initially about the use of mask. But it is still advisable that people wear it since one may be asymptomatic and still be able to spread it.

Just remember that those surgical masks are meant to protect other people from you and not to protect you from the virus.
But if everyone is wearing it that means the spread will be greatly reduced.
You need an N95 mask if you plan on protecting yourself.
Stop parroting rubbish. This is a lie from the west. If everyone wears masks no matter the type the community will be better protected.

Ok! Let's see if with this development, they will ease the lock-down from next week.
The economy is suffering, people are hungry and anarchy is looming as a result of this lock-down yet they are still reporting more cases of covid19 patients on a daily basis.
Open the economy, distribute free nose mask to the people & put all precautionary measures in place in all work places just like they just did in Ghana.
PERIOD!! huh
I am with your opinion 100%
The lock down should be relaxed while we observe precautions

Let them be. They don't know what is happening. We are still at the bottom of the curve and they are rejoicing and clamouring to go back to their businesses. When we get to the tip of the curve, more than 1000 death will be recorded daily here in Lagos owing to its congestion.

I thank God that I have the means to subject myself to voluntary isolation till July.

I have been following CNN,BBC and Aljazeera for two months now.

One thing with Africans is that we take things for granted until we start regretting.

My only worry about terminating this lockdown is children. Risk of infection in children, especially those under 5 who cannot be security conscious might be high. However, just like someone pointed out , the lockdown measure is not sustainable. I pray a vaccine/cure is found soon.

#Seun, the controversy regarding how effective nose masks are, is another issue. I watched a video once in which a self acclaimed American doctor claimed only N95 masks are effective. Proper orientation is needed. Are regular masks effective or not, people need to know.

From this coronavirus things, we could all see that country with less population perform better and managed there resources better than Nigeria that give birth like pigs.

If we do not correlate state resources to population figure, nothing will reach our side.

Imagine a senator bursting he have 24 children and 4 wives in the assembly. Now the Nigeria government will have to feed additional 24 mouth out of meagre resources we have.

My brother, we need to be commanding budget like 100 trillion
