The Champlain College Board of Trustees on Tuesday announced Benjamin Ola. Akande as the ninth President of Champlain College. Mr Akande will assume the role effective July 1, 2020.

Laurie Quinn, Champlain’s Provost and Senior Vice President for Academics, has been serving as Interim President since July 1, 2019.

“Dr Akande is an agent of change and a visionary leader with a global perspective. His enterprising mindset and commitment to student success will be essential as he leads Champlain College in an evolving higher education landscape. We look forward to welcoming Dr Akande to Champlain and supporting his work to advance the College’s strategic position and build on the strength of our distinctive academic offerings,” said Champlain College Board of Trustees Chair, Charles Kittredge.

Mr Akande currently serves as the Assistant Vice Chancellor for International Affairs-Africa and the Associate Director of the Global Health Centre at Washington University in St. Louis.

Named one of the city’s “Most Influential Leaders” by the St. Louis Business Journal, Mr Akande is an accomplished economist and scholar educator, as well as a recognized civic and business leader. He holds a PhD in Economics from the University of Oklahoma and served as a tenured Professor of Economics and Dean of the George Herbert Walker School of Business and Technology at Webster University in St. Louis from 2000–2015. As Dean, Dr Akande was instrumental in securing the $10 million naming gift, the largest in the institution’s history.

As the 21st President of Westminster College in Fulton, Missouri from 2015–2017, Dr Akande strengthened the college’s infrastructure and financial sustainability, transformed academic offerings and reimagined marketing and communication strategies to build the college’s brand identity.

“I am humbled and honoured by the opportunity to lead Champlain College during this period of great transformation and even greater opportunity. While the challenges we currently face as global citizens are daunting, they also sharpen our focus and urge us both individually and as a community, to lead from wherever we are,” said Dr Akande. “The commitment to educating adaptable thinkers, daring change-makers and inclusive innovators who shape professions and inspire communities is what sets Champlain College apart. I look forward to taking this journey with you and thank you for the trust you have placed in me to further Champlain College’s mission together.”

The selection of Dr Akande was the result of an extensive national search conducted by a broadly representative search committee comprised of students, faculty, staff, Trustees, and a local community member. The committee was supported by Koya Leadership Partners, an executive search firm specializing in mission-driven organizations. Neale Lunderville, Trustee and Chair of the Presidential Search Committee, shared, “I want to offer my sincere gratitude and heartfelt appreciation to each of our committee members. Their extraordinary efforts over the past many months produced a strong result: Dr Akande will be an exceptional President for our exceptional College.”

The Board of Trustees and Champlain community are deeply grateful to Dr Laurie Quinn for her service as Interim President. Dr Quinn will return to her role as Provost and Senior Vice President for Academics at the conclusion of her term on June 30, 2020.

Dr Quinn shared, “It’s my honour to congratulate and warmly welcome Dr Akande to lead the Champlain community as our next President. Complex times test great leaders, and we are fortunate to be a strong community with a great new leader transitioning in at this time. I’ll be proud to serve on Dr Akande’s team and to chart Champlain’s future together.”

Born in Nigeria, Dr Akande came to the United States at the age of 17 to pursue a college degree. His parents, Samuel and Comfort Ola. Akande, held a deep respect for and belief in the value of the American higher education system that they instilled in their children.

This respect serves as an inspiration to Dr Akande, whose professional success is motivated by the power of education to change lives. Dr Akande and his wife, Bola Taiwo-Akande, a pharmacist and entrepreneur, will relocate to Burlington this summer. They have three adult daughters.

You see how biased you are?

No one is justifying her tribalistic comment, but you are not eligible to call her out for doing what you also do. That makes you a hypocrite.

Nigerians everywhere. We are the best, the good, the bad and the ugly, no wonder that he goat Donald Trump is jealous of us. The other useless white pigs wish COVID-19 will kill us all, but instead it is the racist white pigs that are dying in thousands.

Our problems remain our leaders and now joined by tribalist miscreants on the internet.

Did anybody stop you from saying 'yoruba amaka', omoluabi etc? grin

There is nothing wrong in promoting and praising oneself, afterall your yoruba leaders and politicians pay millions to Fuji musicians like Kwam 1, Obesere, Pasuma etc to sing their praises and adulate them.

Now why is it a problem if an Igbo man does something praise-worthy, and he is hailed with 'Igbo amaka' adulations?

I noticed it many years ago here on NL, how the word 'Igbo amaka' became a cause for accusing Ndigbo of tribalism and victimization when it doesn't in any way insult yorubas or anyone else?

I've seen people with car stickers saying 'proudly yoruba', it doesn't take away anything from me as an Igbo man but why do some yorubas take offense when we say 'Igbo amaka'? If I put a car sticker saying 'proudly Igbo', some yorubas will definitely raise eyebrow and accuse me of 'tribalism'. But how does it in anyway insult them? grin

Is it because history has conditioned you to believe we Igbo must hate ourselves as a condition of gaining your 'fake acceptability' in Nigeria because we lost a war against the British in 1970s? grin

Wake up my good friend, that narrative no longer holds, we've destroyed that myth. Igbo amaka all the way. grin

we go outside the country we excel. we enter top institutions, army, navy, universities. we chant igbo amaka, yoruba amaka, arrewa amaka. Back here someone from abia cant enter rivers state civil service. When a yoruba man was made min of state for niger delta people complained even though ondo is part of nd and a major oil producer. Here in portharcourt palliatives that the state govt donated are only given to indigenes. a friend from abua(a tribe in rivers state) was not given cos he is not from ikwerre. I had a friend who did medicine from delta. Had few connections. Almost got a job with a hospital in ph. Her offence. She no be indigene. she later got job in a govt hospital in lagos. Am not yoruba but igbo. The only state that have tried in accepting others is lagos. though e don reduce.
