President of the Academic Staff Union of Universities, ASUU Professor Biodun Ogunyemi has directed its members not to submit their Bank Verification Number, BVN to Vice Chancellors before they are paid their February and March salaries being withheld on the orders of President Muhammadu Buhari. Minister of Labour and Employment, Chris Ngige at a briefing on Tuesday, said President Buhari has directed the Ministry of Finance, Budget and National Planning to immediately pay the lecturers the withheld salaries. ASUU, started an indefinite nationwide strike on March 23, 2020, following its rejection of the implementation of Integrated Payroll and Personnel Information System , IPPIS. Before the strike, the government had threatened not to pay salaries of the lecturers who refused to be enrolled on the IPPIS platform. On Tuesday, Ngige announced that President Buhari, on campationate grounds following the ravaging impact of COVID-19 on families has approved the payment of the February and March withheld salaries to ASUU members, but with one condition which is that each lecturer will produce his or her BVN. Shockingly, the cheering news from government, does not seem so to ASUU, as the President Professor Ogunyemi, speaking with ait.live directed lecturers not to submit BVN, as it is viewed as a ploy to lure them into the IPPIS platform. ASUU has been presenting an alternative to IPPIS, which is the University Transparency and Accountability System, UTAS at every opportunity with government However, the Federal Government has consistently insisted that the lecturers should enrol in IPPIS and when UTAS is fully ready, they will be migrated, just as the movement from PENCOM to the Nigerian Universities Pension company,T NUPENCOM was achieved. https://ait.live/just-in-ASUU-rejects-buharis-condition-for-payment-of-withheld-salaries/ |

Fed govt condition for payment of Feb and March salaries: ...has approved the payment of the February and March withheld salaries to ASUU members, but with one condition which is that each lecturer will produce his or her BVN... But: ...Professor Biodun Ogunyemi has directed its members not to submit their Bank Verification Number, BVN to Vice Chancellors before they are paid their February and March salaries being withheld So why can't the lecturers submit their BVN for the payment of their salaries? High level corruption in the Ivory Towers. 3 Likes |

AAA593:And this is how they will continue to drag it until Buhari's tenure ends. smart people The Integrated Payroll and Personnel Information System (IPPIS) is an information Communications Technology (ICT) project initiated by the Federal Government of Nigeria (FGN) to improve the effectiveness and efficiency of payroll administration for its Ministries, Departments and Agencies One would be crazy not to operate such in a just and egalitarian society But Nigeria In the hands of Buhari and his likes One would be crazy to go into such agreement Nothing works effectively, consistently and equally in this country The government just want to have everyone under it clutches and ASUU, knows that! Reminds me of a saying, "you cannot know more than your teacher" Why not continue with the previous way of paying then work to achieve UTAS ASAP Everything is not one way now 3 Likes 2 Shares |

macIB:Yes, lecturers are free to do extra jobs to augment their salaries. But there is no where in the world where you get more than one salary from the same govt. If you spend overtime or entitle to additional allowances, forward it to the govt, it will be paid either separately or along with salary. 4 Likes |

What exactly are they hiding? I think it should be obvious to all reasonable Nigerians that ASUU is simply fighting to cover up the corruption that is now entrenched in our ivory towers. Most ASUU members are illegally receiving salaries in more than one federal institution and they are hellbent on maintaining the corrupt status quo. Sadly, Buhari is just too lenient with these guys. This is the time for the president to take a strong action against the union. 5 Likes |

That is just the ASUUs president's personal opinion. Bring the forms and let individual lecturers decide whether they want to continue to live with or without salaries. I have it on good record that so many families of lecturers are starving. 3 Likes |

macIB:Gone are the days we had qualified lecturers, some of them are distributing ignorance, you do not think of having jobs when many are unemployed, it is sheer wickedness, one of them boasted that he had put 30 years post doctoral experience, such a person should retire and give the younger ones opportunity, diminishing return has set in over many years ago 1 Like |

Lol Buhari is such a weak president. If the dont want to work fire them. Most federal employees have little leverage considering how bad the job market is. The only thing to consider is if there's enough qualified people to replace them. If you pull a Ronald Reagan then what are they going to do. 1 Like
