Just to think that some months back, I was actually arguing with a GT fanboy that acess is on same level as GT if not more.

They are indirectly killing their business, because there will be panic withdrawal.

They are essentially closing most of the Diamond bank branches.

What is my own. I will quietly port to other banks if getting a branch close to me is difficult

Why didn't they shut the irrelevant branches and retrench some of the diamond staff when they acquired them. Why wait until covid19.

The matter of acquisitions or mergers are gradual process thing. Most of the staff in both diamond bank and AccessBank knew that a day like this will come. I was a staff of AccessBank, I resigned and found my way out of naija immediately the merger talks began.

The merger consists of so many things. But assets and liabilities are involved. If they had started closing down branches of diamond bank and sacking them immediately the merger went down, Trust me, many customers would have pulled out from diamond bank in panic that they are closing down. And if that happens, automatically it brings about cash runs, so if all the customers of diamond bank pull out from the bank, what will be AccessBank banks gain of merging with them?

When eco bank swallowed oceanic, the same thing happened, when AccessBank swallowed inter, same thing.



What they will do is in each locations where there are diamond bank and AccessBank, they will check the bigger or better building and close down the other one.

I never expected them to closedown and sack the staff immediately the merger went down. It would have been disastrous to both of them.

Trust me. They lost so much money over the period they were running double branches concurrently in the same location.

Every business mans aim is to make money and not to in-cure losses.



That is a nice move that has been on the pipeline.they had planned all these months back, they have made their budgets for the next financial year and didn’t include those affected branches in that budgets. It is just a coincidence that it fell in this covid 19 times.

Trust me. They are. If gt has merged with another bigger bank with a lot of branches. They would do the same thing.


Some of the closures are understandable.

For example. There is an AccessBank next to diamond band inside unizik awka.

Also. There is AccessBank next to diamond bank in Regina awka.

There is also an AccessBank next to diamond bank in main market. Same in building materials ogidi.

I do not think that both branches will operating at the same time in the same location when it actually is one entity. That is a pure waste of running cost.



It is very understandable that half of the AccessBank branches be closed after the merger with diamond bank. No need for the waste.

And since those branches are closed, the staff will also be retrenched.

If you ask me Access bank is not in any way distressed, it's just cutting cost and re-strategizing. They have apprehended this tempo currently being felt by their pool customers, and you can trust that their main customers have enough briefs about this development.

In business, bank executives do not recognize the word EMOTIONS, infact it does not exist in their vocab.

When the dust settles you are going to hear of banking products that would draw in a different set of clients for their continuous growth.

With the closure of those branches they believe they would have recouped a huge savings that can cater for any turbulence going forward. This is the common thinking of business executives especially those of banks.

If any call for donations comes up again, they will readily carry out what they term as their social corporate responsibility. There is always a budget for such. Thank bank is not in anyway broke.

I am glad that some people actually understand how some organization such as banks are run. AccessBank is still a very strong bank.

Nigerian banks don't even have enough 'physical branches'. There's demand for it, the truth is, Nigerian banks being inefficient, can't cut down their operational costs. With less cost they will do just fine.

I think the environment in which they operate is also a factor. Do you know what it costs to run 346 diesel generators attached to these 346 branches? Coupled with an army of staff?

I once lodged in a hotel somewhere in Nigeria and being that I am a regular customer I wanted a good deal as I was staying longer than a week. So I was asked to speak with their MD. His complaint was of huge NEPA bill aside from what it costs him to oil the pockets of NEPA managers manning his area. And all that in addition to the cost of running two giant automatic diesel powered generators. Men I felt for him. He didn't even go into his payroll stuff and taxes. When you make any attempt to upgrade your system in a generator-powered economy, you will have no option than to embrace the virtue of patience. It is almost always unprofitable.

Ask MTN how much it costs them to power their myriads of generators attached to their equipment Nationwide. Their only advantage is that Nigeria is a huge market and great consumers, otherwise they would sooner be out of business.

To move forward Nigeria must fix it's energy challenges. There is no easy shortcut. That is the sad reality.

Access bank is currently giving very negative signals. They are behaving like a small bank. They lack the temperament and maturity needed for sectoral leadership.

Hope you know the 1 billion can't pay 1month staff salaries. Access bank's wages and salaries for a year is about 73billion. So, if they did not donate 1billion to the government, this would still have happened

They have always had cost issues making them have lower profits compared to banks of same Cadre even when sometimes Access has higher revenue... this seems like an opportunity to combat it. Access is still a strong bank.

The news is sad though and more might come from other banks and even companies from other sectors soon, as the war against covid continues. Our prayer is that it doesn't go beyond this month.
