Yes, please, i need more clarification. but first, let me say that i appreciate your contribution. Out of curiosity, i have asked this same questions some years back to the hausa people i knew in lagos and this your explanation is same thing they said. And the main thing or main part of the explanation is that INTERMARRIAGE thing, that you hardly see a fulani family that don't have hausa relatives and vice versa in the North. But for me, my curiosity lies in why such a bond has gotten so strong to the point that 2 distinct tribes and people now almost see themselves as a homogeneous unit. Why do i feel there might be more to it than is being covered by your first explanation is because, there are other tribes too where you have a lot of intermarriage too, for example in the deep south, igbos mix with other southern tribes a lot, and hardly it is common place to see south south tribes with igbo relatives, in the southwest, yorubas marry igbo women a lot and for the sake of cultural similarity, let me better use something like Yorubas and Edo people, or Yorubas and Urhobo people, share lots of cultural similarities and they intermarry a lot, many edo or benin families have yoruba relatives and vice versa, same thing with Urhobo but still they see themselves are heterogeneous groups, as different tribes and they don't merge their tribal identity into a single unit like you have with the hausa-fulani. So i just wonder if the bond goes beyond culture or religion, or marriage, is there some history to it or is there like a treaty of unification?
We share the same Geographically entity... If u come to kano... Fulani and Hausa's are both indigenes of the state... You'll see a fulani and Hausas from the same village...that's how it is in the whole northern states...

That's why the bond is so tight! This is not about people coming from different states. This is about people sharing the same ancestral land

Arrewa, if these are the achievements of hausa/Fulani intelligentsia, id say you Northerners are a loooing way behind Southerners in achievements.

Good all the same, but you guys have to really restructure the mindset of average Northerners. Alot will be achieved if your religion-based cultural practices are made moderate, especially to suit existing realities.

I rest my case.

Again, I appreciate your contributions. I agree with your point about sharing the same geographical space, very solid point that makes sense, especially relative to my example of other southern tribes mixing up. You're very correct, they don't share same lands, so it is say easier for them to choose to be separate entities. So let me focus my observations on the North itself. Like I said before I believe you are right and everything you explained is true and correct. But I still feel there is more to this bond, I think it goes deeper than that and so far no northerners I know have been able to come up with an explanation beyond this same area you have covered. Sometimes, I feel they know more but are hiding the info, like maybe it is meant to be a secret for only hausa-fulani to know about, just an opinion though, I'm not saying that's a fact, but sometimes it feels that way. The question you may wonder is why I feel, or why do I feel there is more to this bond than is being revealed? I will answer like this, many years ago, I used to think Hausas and Fulanis were the only tribe in the North, until whether by chance or whatever, for the first and only time in my life, I dated an Hausa girl from Kaduna. Well, at first I thought she was Hausa, like because she didn't look Fulani. Because she was the fleshy type, so first time i saw her and heard her accent i thought she was hausa, cuz fulanis are usually the slender, slim types. Sorry I don't mean this as an offense or abuse. Anyway, after some months of dating, (very sweet girl, well behaved, coolheaded, respectful, submissive and stuff like that, and very very neat), she told me she wasn't actually Hausa by tribe even though she speaks Hausa. I was shocked to my bone cuz I automatically thought she was Hausa prior to her revelation. She told me she was from Kafanchan area in Kaduna but they were not Hausas, can't remember the actual tribe she said she was. And then she was like there are plenty different tribes in the North, just like we have in the south but the only difference is majority of them speak Hausa, like it is the common language, so most people think all of them are Hausas. So now back to my original question, in this case where you have many other northern tribes whom also intermarry with Hausa ands Fulani, who also share similar culture and share the same geographic location, how come it is only hausa-fulani that formed the single unit identity, why don't Northerners say Hausa-Nupe or Kanuri-fulani etc, how come it is only hausa-fulani that merge together in this way? This is the major reason I have this feeling that the bond goes beyond your explanation. I don't know, maybe it is an exaggeration on my part, but just sometimes it crosses my mind as to why that unique unity is singled out.

we of different tribe and different language... We only share similar culture and geographical location... We inter marry you hardly see a Hausa family with no fulani blood... You also hardly see a Fulani family with no Hausa blood

We see ourselves as one people... That's why most of our people use to identify as Hausafulani... Tell me if you need more clarification

On the contrary from my personal observation , I think the hausas and some other tribes are in the majority but the Fulanis though in minorities are usually the ruling class, this pattern cut across most northern states except some core northern Areas where the Fulanis are significantly dominant in population (in these few state they are still in power and happened to usually be the wealthy and most educated ones)
I also observed that Fulanis love getting married to Fulanis to preserve the blood line, hardly will you see a Fulanis getting married to non Fulanis by blood line.

can you please tell us your own tribe from Borno ? Dating a Fulani girl is not the same as getting married to one , I dated a Fulani girl while I was serving in mubi Adawama state too but she made it cleared to me that her people won't subscribe to her marriage to a Christian and southerner , there is no doubts there could be some that would rebel against the wishes of their parents and kins men like the immediate sister of that my gf then who eloped with a Corp member to Lagos and got married against the wishes of her parents.

Great post. But i have a question, please don't be offended for my asking, it is just for me to learn about the northern identity culture, i don't mean to ask for any negative reason. Why is it that people, mostly northerners lump hausa and fulani together, especially with the famous phrase you just used hausa-fulani. almost as if hausa-fulani is a single tribe. Is hausa and fulani not 2 different tribes, and are they not culturally different? why do they always get joined together like as if they are a single unit. I think that confusion too is prevalent in the south that see them as one, based largely on the info or perception fed to them by northerners. Is there something more to it, that they are thus joined and united, is there something about the why we don't know?

It started with intermarriages between them many many years ago but is more peculiar in the NW than NE. Some Hausas household have like 4 or more generational intermarriage between them and Fulani hence the reasoning for lumping them together with the phrase "Hausa Fulani"..

Secondly, Hausa and Fulani have the highest intermarriage between them in the whole of northern Nigeria than any other tribe. For instance, my Kanuri people hardly Marry outside our tribe they maintain that tradition of marrying within the old Borno lineage. However, some Fulani from yola also maintain that inner circus of marriage they hardly marry other tribes but some do it sha

Kanuri and Fulani are fun of playing with themselves so they do marry sometimes.

Yea truly It will be very hard for a real Fulani Muslim to marry a christain.

However there are very very few Fulani Christians they are mostly found in Taraba axis.

They're making us proud by showing that nigerians are generally good, disciplined, reliable people - the few drug dealers, 419ners, internet fraudsters and other bad eggs do not represent who we are as a people. Besides, it shows the north has many great guys, contrary to what evil-minded foreigners are feeding a section of the country over a pirate radio station.

Let me contribute to this discussion.

1) The Historical backgrounds and worldviews of people in the core North is DIFFERENT from people in the South and these are molded by the religion of ISLAM.

2) The Legacy the the Uthman dan Fodio's Jihard.

The Jihard sought to correct some perceived evils in the various Hausa kingdoms by toppling the ruling Hausa Dynasties and establish an egalitarian community in which every body will be equally and justifiably treated under the banner Islam.

3) To achieve num-2 above, the Fulani Jihadists stressed Religious (Islamic) identity over all other identies, including ethnicities.

4) Politics of Colonial Nigeria. Those who have lived together under the Sokoto Caliphate practicing similar (Islamic) culture and inter-marriages for about 100 years before Colonial rule were regarded by the British Colonial Government as one homogeneous unit- the Hausa-Fulanis.

5) There are examples of similar different but similar ethnic groups/Towns being regarded as one unit (of administration) during the colonial rule e g Ogori-Mangogo, Ikwerre-Igbo, Sango-Otta.

Recently, I have also seen some people from Ilorin referring to themselves as 'Yoruba-Fulanis'

Openbusiness:

Yes, please, i need more clarification. but first, let me say that i appreciate your contribution.
