My phone was stolen during the lock down period, so I lost my both sims MTN&Glo. I couldn't retrieved, nor get a temporal sim due to the lockdown.
So I sorted myself out by borrowing unused sim from my neighbour just to stay online.
Bought a temporal used phone, still in good shape. Realized the internet speed has been extremely slow, though I'm using Glo... I've never had a problem with their speed cuz it's quite OK in my area.
But it sims this guy sim card is cursed with SLOWNESS, I realize it's 3G sim cuz I tried using it on my 4G lite Mifi and 4G option isnt there.
Even at 3G I should get a good speed like before, but the case is different with the sim.

Yesterday I decided to go out and get a new sim since the partial easing of the lockdown. Got a 4G lite sim, registered and start using it an hour later.
Meen the difference was CLEARED the speed was amazing, even though the phone is 3G phone. I became curious why is the other sim speed that poor? I switched the data to that sim... Speed is still as poor as anything.

This brought my curiosity here... Do Sim Cards determine Internet speed in such a way?

Yes it does even if you want to call Costomer service they answer older sim faster

Yes. 2G sim was slower than 3G sims, which are slower than LTE sims.

yeah it does

You said you used your new LTE sim on a 3g device. Meaning you are still browsing on the 3g network(not 4g). All you need to do was call the call center and a simple troubleshooting would have done. Some sims needs to be manually provisioned for the 3g or LTE network. You are probably browsing on 2g on your friends sim.

There's nothing like 2g sims, we have 2 different type of sim. The sim and the Usim. The sim supports gsm up to the 3g network, but not 4g the Usim however supports 4g network. In other words if you can use 2g on your sim, you should be able to use 3g as well(provided you have a 3g enable device)

Sure sim differs in internet speed , data plan also differs.

Monthly data plan is always faster than daily plan

Re: Does Sim Card Determine Internet Speed? My Experience by niggi4life(m): 6:35pm On May 09, 2020
A SIM card is not at all connected with the technical features of a phone. The SIM card is simply a sort of ID card: it identifies you to the device and the network by giving your unique subscriber ID. It does have some storage capacity, where you can store, say, your contact numbers. It’s a legacy feature for most people now, because smartphones have much more space for storing contacts and other info, and they’re much easier to sync with other software, etc - old featurephones did not have such luxury, so people used to store that information on SIM cards.

Apart from that, your SIM card does nothing else.

The speed of data access relies on two things: your smartphone and your service provider. Every mobile phone does have a radio module that is responsible for talking to the network. It is this piece of hardware that either can or can not use latest communication technologies: if the phone does not support 4G, you will not get that speed whatever you try. Many smartphones today do support 4G, even more support LTE (a variation of 4G), so that shouldn’t be an issue.

The carrier can also limit your speed: after your phone identifies with your SIM card ID, the carrier can look up what type of access is available to you (what option did you purchase) and let the phone use only the access speed you actually paid for. That means that your very fast 4G phone will use 3G if your contract with the carrier states that this is the speed you’ll get from them.

If the phone is incapable of using the speed you’ve subscribed to, the network will switch to the best available option for that phone.

To conclude: swapping SIM cards in and out of phones will transfer only your subscriber ID and data that you might have had stored on the SIM card, but it will not affect the speed of connection or the data/applications you have on the phone (for that you have other ID, such as Apple ID or Google account). The only issue here is that there are three different sizes of SIM cards, so you might have to cut the SIM card to size or use an adapter if the SIM is too small.

NAH i don't believe, my mum Sim is a non 4g airtel and it work as 4G on my 4G phone.
And I don't believe Sim determines internet speed every things depend on the phone you're using.
I think yall saying yes should do their research very well before giving an answer.

The strenght of phone also determines the speed... Most times not sim

SIM And Phone determines the speed of the internet, but if the sim is 4Glite and the phone doesn,t support 4glite, it will still be SLOW
Yeah, the phone doesn't support 4G but the 3G service was really faster on the 4G sim than on 3G sim...

I've learned today

Op. Sim affects. My sim of many years does not browse fast. I changed the sim card when it got damaged and since then, the browsing speed is depressing. Its takes 5min or more to open a simple nairaland page on a good day. So I just got another Sim and use it for calls. I've reported to Mtn severally but they seem not to understand. I don't have the energy to go for another sim replacement, but it has convinced me that sim matters.

No this not on front-page shocked

Seriously OP, of all factors sim card? Really

The guy above is correct but I doubt that was what op meant.

Call for a decent solar plan for your home and businesses comprising a 1kva luminous inverter, 200AH battery and 4*150W solar module for up to 18hrs uninterrupted power supply daily. All for just #315,000

Guy, the op is right. Sim card matters when it comes to internet speed.. Maybe for Glo Sim cards though, cos I had similar case as the op recently with a 3g Glo Sim which was so slow, but when I switched to the 4g Sim, the internet speed became very fast.

Maybe you haven't tried Glo 3g Sim and 4g oga sim, my brother, the difference is clear between these sim cards and internet speed

You can't compare 3g n 4g na.
We are talking about 3g and 3g sim

I'm talking of the Sims too. Glo has ordinary sims and 4g sims which they refer to as oga sim. That 4g sim internet speed is way faster than the ordinary/3g sim even if you are using both on the same location

Yes it does! Besides, you have gotten your answers from the simple test you did.

If the sim is old, it probably may have lose one of the legs to the chip...sim has 6legs, so the browsing fit slow or messages don't enter or enters lately.

Also, the band of a phone determines the kind of speed you get. If your network provider doesn't give you service on the band ur phone supports, OYO lo wa grin

Just to add, upgrading your sim to 4G is also one of the best way to enjoy maximum tasks your phone can deliver in terms of internet connectivity. However, if the base station serving you isn't configured for 4G, you will be limited...in this regard. All the same, it is advisable to upgrade your sim as soon as new sim technology is available.

Fantastic to always change your sim every 3/5years, to a new sim plastic, especially if you are fond of removing and inserting your sim into another phone all of the time wink
With regards to network band, a service provider I called told me that they have band 3 and 28 in a particular location. If my phone supports both bands, would my internet speed be high?
