LOVETTE

Habib appeared more excited than before. He drank from the plastic bottle of malt set before the table, his eyes twinkling.

“I’m going to miss you, Lovette,” he said for the umpteenth time.

“I’m going to miss you too,” I echoed, hoping my words would reassure him.

He nodded and was silent for some seconds. “And the final camp is next week?”

He had asked the question before. I smiled and tried to avoid getting irritated by his questions.

“Yes, the passing out parade is next week.”

He sighed and gulped that the rest of his drink.

“Now, let’s go to the room I’ve booked.”

There was excitement in his tone. He always sounded excited at a time like this. I finished the rest of my drinks too. He picked his cap from the table, put it on, stood up and smiled. I stood up too.

“Let me get the key to the room from the manager.” He moved to meet the guy behind the reception desk.

Why Habib kept referring to the man as ‘manager’ baffled me. I thought it was better to regard the man as reception clerk or something. We were in a guest house that offered all sorts of hospitality, including hosting lovers for an hour, a night and so on.

The place was along Samaru Road, Zaria, and it was a discreet and serene place.

Habib was soon back with the key and a leer on his face.

“Let’s go, my lovely queen.”

I followed him out of the lobby to a corridor and to a room by the left. He unlocked it and we stepped inside. It was one of the rooms in the guest house and it looked clean without being elegant.

He had brought me here before. Specifically, we were no strangers to the room.

“Here we are,” he said, grinning.

He locked the door, removed his cap and started undressing. I put my handbag on the bed-side table and removed my shoes. In a minute, Habib had stripped himself only to the boxer.

“No, no,” he said, grinning at me. “Permit me to UnCloth you.”

He always said this, and I always wondered why he said so. It was not that I did not want to be pampered. I did as he desired. He unzipped my jeans trousers and pulled it down.

He also tugged at the peach pantie and pulled it to my ankles. I stepped out of both the trousers and the pantie.

“Ah, you can sit on the bed, now,” he said, the way you would address a baby.

Gingerly, I sat on the bed while he unashamedly unbuttoned my top and removed it. I was wearing a white, well-fitted bra, and I could see him look very excited as he ogled my bust.

I unstrapped the bra and removed it.

“Oh, my God,” he muttered under his breath upon seeing my full boobs.

“As I always say,” he continued in excitement, “your breasts are the loveliest breasts I’ve ever seen in this life.”

I smiled but said nothing. Somehow, I believed he had said that to one lady or the other before. A man like Habib was capable of that. I shrugged. I was a lady who would not be carried away by such words from any man.

He touched the boobs and caressed them. I could feel his breath getting hot already as it fanned my bust. He brought his mouth to them, kissing, sucking and suckling.

Now, he had full erection. Not to be a passive lover, I rubbed my left hand on the straining dick in his boxer.

“Oh, Lovette, you’re so beautiful,” he muttered.

Again, he had said that countless of times. I pulled his boxer than and had a firm grasp of his dick.

“Wait, wait.” He quickly went to his trousers and brought what I suspected would be a packet of condom out.

He had earlier said he hated using it, but I had insisted that except when I was giving him a mouth action, he must always use it. Quickly, he wore it.

I teased his dick which didn’t really look long. It had an average size, but he had always prided himself about it.

I held the organ again, traced my fingers on the tip and squeezed gently. His eyes popped out on pleasant surprise.

“You can still play with it later, but let’s get down to the main thing now.”

I knew what he meant as the main thing was sex, real sex. I lie down on the bed and spread out my legs.

He mounted me. I knew it would be the ‘missionary style’ even without him saying so. He was the conservative type who knew only one way of having sex with a woman. He inserted his dick inside me and started thrusting.

He was not a lover I would rate high in sexual performance. As a matter of fact, I would rate him low. However, he had been the source of some of the indulgence I had been enjoying in my national service year, so I let him be.

I wiggled my waist and made some moaning to convey to him that I was enjoying the act. His thrusts were soft and gentle.

I knew he was having a good time. I could see some perspirations on his forehead and chest. In less than five minutes, he got to his peak. He gripped my shoulders, shuddered his body and orgasmed.

I feigned my own orgasm. It was succinct to say that he was panting like a man that had just finished a long distance race. He collapsed on the bed beside me, still short of breaths.

* * *

Days later, the day of passing out came. It had been fun alright, but I was glad the national youth service was over. The Passing Out Parade (POP) had been grueling and, in the hot sun of Kaduna, one could not really say the whole thing was enjoyable.

The compensation was that at least I had my certificate for the national service as a bona fide Nigerian youth.

I joined the teaming corpers who thronged to the main road, off the permanent orientation camp along Abuja Road, to take a bus to Kaduna city. I was moving close to one of the commercial busses when my phone rang. It was Habib on the line.

“Wait for me at the orientation camp,” he said.

“I’m already on my way. You people have concluded the program, haven’t you?

I sighed. “Yes, we have.”

“Good.” He seemed to laugh. “I’ll soon be there. Wait for me.”

“Okay.”

I sighed again and went back to the gate. I would wait there since it would be easier for me to see him as he drove in.

“Hey, Lovette, what’s up?” a female voice said around me. I turned to look at the speaker.

“Are you waiting for somebody here?” the person went on.

It was Florence, a fellow corper – one of those I had made friendship with.

I smiled. “Hello, Flo. One of my friends has decided he would come and pick me.”

“Oh?” She looked relieved as if she was the one Habib had promised to come and pick. “That will save you a lot of stress, won’t it? I guess I can wait and go with you.”

I nodded. “Yes, that will be no problem.”

We stood together and chatted about our experiences.

She read Pharmacy and had been posted to the General Hospital in Kaduna, unlike me who read Business Administration and was posted to Nigerian Military School, Zaria, as Business Studies teacher.

She told me she would return to Markudi where her parents lived, and where she hoped to get a job. As for me, the ultimate destination was Lagos, where my parents were and where “things were happening”.

She told me she would return to Markudi where her parents lived, and where she hoped to get a job. As for me, the ultimate destination was Lagos, where my parents were and where “things were happening”.

Several minutes later, the Honda Accord of Habib approached the gate. As soon as he saw me, he parked the car by the road-side and came out of it.

“That’s the person I’ve been waiting for,” I told Florence.

“Okay.”

We moved towards the Honda.

“Sorry, I couldn’t make up my mind on time about whether I would come or not,” Habib said, grinning, and looking from me to my companion.

“Good afternoon,” I greeted. “Thanks for being able to make it. The lady here is my friend, Florence, and she will like to have a ride with us.”

His grin became a big smile. “Hello, Florence. Of course, you’re welcome to join us.”

He shook hands with her and I could see a glint of excitement on his face. I had no doubt that Habib would fall for any beautiful lady.

He already had two wives and I wondered how many girlfriends he had, apart from me.

He opened the boot of the car and we piled our luggage inside. We entered the car and the trip back to Kaduna began in earnest. I sat in the front seat, but I knew that Habib was using the inside rear mirror to steal glances at Florence.

“So, how was the experience like?” he asked.

I supposed the question was meant for Flo, so I allowed her to answer. There wasn’t much to say during the trip. At Kaduna, he told our guest that he would be driving to Zaria.

“Where will you like to get down?” he asked. “Is Mando Park okay?”

“Yes, anywhere I’ll be able to easily get a cab to the main town,” Florence answered.

“Okay.” The car soon came to a halt for her to alight.

“Lovette, it has been pleasure to know you,” Florence told me. “Please, don’t forget to call me on the phone.” She turned to Habib. “Thanks for the ride, sir.”

Habib nodded at her while I smiled.

“Sure, Flo. I’ll give you a call.” I waved at her and she moved on. Habib hooted the horn before engaging the gear of the car.

“You always seem to have beautiful friends,” he commented as soon as he was on Zaria Road.

I frowned slightly. “What does that mean?”

He realized he shouldn’t have said that. “What I mean is your friends are always as beautiful as you are,” he put in apologetically.

I shrugged.

“You still want to travel down to Lagos by Wednesday?” he asked.

I nodded. He had asked several times and I had always replied in the affirmative.

“How I wish you will stay. If only you can exercise a little bit of patience, I will secure a better job for you.”

I nodded. He had asked several times and I had always replied in the affirmative.

“How I wish you will stay. If only you can exercise a little bit of patience, I will secure a better job for you.”

I was quiet. There was no need I argued with him again. Some days ago, he had told me he had got a job for me with a firm belonging to his friend. He had said the job was Administrative Officer and it was with a farm company.

A farm company!

To start with, I didn’t study anything related to Agricultural Science or Agricultural Economics.
How then could I fit in working on a farm?

“You would actually be working in an office,” he had explained. “It is a big farm company that is into dairy and chicken products.”

Whether it was in an office or inside an ultra, modern plaza, there was no way I would tell my sisters or friends that I was working in a farm company. I could imagine what Becky’s reaction would be.

“So, Lovette, with all your university education, you would end up working on a farm!”

How cheeky Becky could be. Some of my friends would most likely tease that I would soon become a farmer’s wife.

Ah, I would rather avoid that. Now, Habib was promising he would get me another job. I appreciated his gesture, but I would rather go to Lagos and continue my life there.

Doing the national service for a whole year in Zaria was more than enough.

He drove straight to Chindit Barracks and to the premises of the NMS. He was soon parking his car in front of the gate to the quarters where I stayed.

“I need to report to the office now,” he said. “Later when I close, I’ll be back.” He was a lecturer at the Economics Department of the Ahmadu Bello University, Samaru campus.

“Okay,” I replied.

“See you.”

I waved at him and stepped inside the building. In my room, I changed from the NYSC uniform to a t-shirt and bum short. Then, I lay on the bed to take a nap.

* * *

On Wednesday morning, I woke up early to pack my things. Since I would be traveling by road, it was better I set out early. Habib did not come around until few minutes to seven.

He took me to the park where I would get a sixteen-seater bus to Lagos. He was with me until the bus filled up.

“Don’t forget to be giving me calls from time to time,” he said. “And of course, I will constantly be calling you too.”

“Sure I will.”

The driver started the bus and we started the journey.

Its was a long trip in which we crossed Kaduna, Niger, Kwara, Oyo, Osun and Ogun States before getting to Lagos. After about eleven hours, I alighted from the bus at Ijora. Oh, what a long, tedious journey it was.

I took a cab to Akerele, Surulere, where my parents lived in a two-bedroom apartment. My twin sister, Mary was expected from Akwa Ibom where she had gone for her own national service. I met Becky, my younger sister and my mum in the house.

“Lovette!” Becky exclaimed on sighting me. She came to give me a bear hug.

“Hey, easy, Becky,” I cautioned.

“Weren’t you eating well over there?” Becky went on. “See how thin you are.”

I quickly checked my self. “Is that so? I thought I’ve gained some weight.”

“Becky, why don’t you allow your sister to rest before barraging her with questions?” Mummy said. “Get her something to drink, for God’s sake.”

Becky soon came with a plastic bottle of cold water and a glass cup. I took it and drank gladly. Becky was all over me, asking about my experience and how the service fared.

Later in the night, mum, dad and I discussed the next line of action.

“I need a job,” I said. “I will have to start job-hunting.”
