Bala Mubarak is a humanist who was arrested almost 2 weeks ago for blasphemy.

As a non-muslim, Bala Mubarak should not have been arrested for blasphemy. Sharia law does not apply to non-muslims.

Even if a conservative muslim advocate wants to argue that Bala is guilty, the unfortunate fact is that the police have been silent on his arrest. Right now, no one knows if Bala is dead or alive. How is that justice? What happened to habeas corpus? The rule of law against unlawful detention and imprisonment is very clear on this. Why hasn't Bala been presented the option for bail?

As it stands now, the fate of Mubarak Bala, Nigerian humanist who was arrested last week is unknown. Nobody is sure if Mr. Bala is alive or dead. If he is alive, no one knows the conditions of his detention. Mr. Bala was last seen on April 29, 2020, a day after police detectives from the Kano State Command arrested him in Kaduna.

As soon as the information reached me that Mr. Bala was in the police custody, I contacted the Commissioner of Police (CP) in Kaduna and the Police Public Relations Officer (PPRO). They confirmed the arrest of Mr. Bala but could not provide details. They made it clear that Bala’s case was not their case and that Bala would be transferred to Kano for investigation. They declined to disclose the reason for the arrest and if Bala’s case could be transferred to Abuja or any other neutral place.

In normal countries, freedom of speech is is limited by libel and slander, which is usually a civil and not a criminal case. Religion is not a person and cannot claim libel or slander.

He professed atheism in 2013 presumably because of academic challenge and frustration, you know when a person is not so intelligent and is not patient enough to work hard and endure even in the face of failure. He must have spent some time praying to God to ease his academic challenge for sometimes but been a quitter that he is, he could not even sustain his prayers and endure patiently to the test ( you know Allah tests humans particularly with the things they value most to separate the real believers from the hypocrites who will ride only when things are good and rosy).
Apart from his parents and loved ones who might have tried to make him see reason on why atheism is the wrong decision, no one threatened or attacked him, he has being an atheist for over six years in the midst of Muslims.
Suddenly, he stopped sticking to his atheism and started to deliberately insult Muslims.
If you are as intelligent as I believe, you must know that there is a difference between statements such as " there's no God, Allah doesn't exist, I disbelieve in Allah, Muhammad is not a prophet or Islam is a false religion" and statements like "Allah is a piece of sh*t, Muhammad is a terror**t, . etc" I don't have to spell the difference for you.
How would you feel if I insult you or your parents without any provocation in the name of exercising my freedom of expression.
