Bonjour tout, I have been learning through the online course of learnfrenchwithAlexa I don't know if anyone is using this medium also. Then I have a tutor that we have some seesions online through whatsapp but I wanna ask how to keep up with so much things to memorise such as verbs and nouns.

Just learnt that words like aimer can act as auxiliary verbs . E g J'aime a jouer au football

I think you're referring to "modal" use of the verb, even though strictly speaking the sentence you gave is neither correct nor an indicative use of a verb to show modality. The "a" shouldn't be there.

There are only two auxiliary verbs in French, etre and avoir.

Je m'appelle étrange.

La collaboration et l'interdépendance ici sont vraiment époustouflantes et j'encourage tout le monde à continuer dans cette direction.

I've noticed a couple of off-thread/offline language learning assistance strategies. That's very commendable and I challenge everyone to take advantage of this as much as possible. However, in a bid to keep our thread alive, I also encourage us to bring the results of whatever we learned outside to this place so we can get more insight, share knowledge and have fun while at it. Essays, questions on grammar and vocabulary, etc. can be shared here for contributions (it's been long I saw an essay here).

A couple of people contacted me and asked if they could send thier essays to me for review, I agreed but I didn't get any eventually. undecided

Shout out to everyone keeping the thread alive, Mamaroon, Fabguen, etc. You guys are helplessly passionate and we're here for it! cheesy

NB: Fabguen, you sent me a mail which I've responded to twice but you never got back to me cry

Good luck and best regards to everyone! wink

salut ! I believe duo has tips on knowing the difference between the two and also make use of the Google to get more info.
I feel Duo is actually good in vocabularies but not enough to put you to standard.

Most of the time you just have to learn them with practice.
Very rough rule of thumb is to use mnemonics based on using endings in some cases, but this should be at the beginning of your studies.
Nouns ending in -sion, -tion, -aison, -ance, -ence, te, -ude, -ure etc. are usually feminine.

Those ending in -eau, -ment, -acle are usually masculine, etc.

I also learned a new word 'abracadabrantesque' which simply means 'exaggerated'. Thought it was a joke till I looked it up. Lol

Abracadabra-ntesque!!!

This is a word that defines itself...preposterous, ludicrous, unbelievable.

Practice makes perfect.

We just have to learn it! But continual exposure helps.

The brain is a very powerful organ. That's how kids learn to speak, by hearing words over and over when they are spoken by parents and older siblings...and by repeating the same over and over again.

Repeat what you read, repeat what you hear I.e.say it again aloud......if you are vain like me...try it in front of a mirror cool

So major caveat...we are NOT replacing any language school (online or physical)....we urge you to absolutely continue with those.

We are just people who have travelled this road and have come out on the other side victorious; we have done so with the gracious help of others like Etrange, Danmisla & Njbybrthnly, and we're just looking to play it forward.

Of course, we are all still here to respond on NL as well, so please feel free to shout for help on here. I can't think of any resource that was useful to me that hasn't already been shared here on the TEF thread.

BTW Ayandee's on board too......oya sis, inspire us biko!

Fabguen:
Lol. Full cruise.

Starting a free mentorship program soon for persons starting French from scratch and need some help or need help generally with the exam.

Thanks guys. More grease to your elbows

Voila !

Ok here goes. I learnt 4 phrases last week as regards weather.

"its raining cats and dogs"
Il pleut des seaux d'eau
Il pleut des cordes

Very cold weather - un froid de canard
Very bad weather - un temps de chien

Ok, guys, let's look into this since that's reason for sharing.

Like Sir Cyberknight rightly said, we have only two auxiliary verbs in French: 'être' and 'avoir'. Therefore, 'aimer' is not and cannot act as an auxiliary verb. Again, the verb 'aimer' is not followed by the preposition 'à' in this context.

I'd also like to clarify that 'aimer' is also not a model verb as we have three main modal verbs in French: 'pouvoir', 'devoir' and 'vouloir' (unlike in English, modal verbs are not needed to construct the future tense).

Having said these, I believe what Yinkaexpress wanted to say was "semi-auxiliary" and that would be correct (of course, with the exclusion of the preposition 'à'). Semi-auxiliary verbs are used to express nuances of time, mood or aspect. In fact, virtually all verbs that can be followed by an infinitive (with or without a preposition) are considered semi-auxiliary in French. This includes 'aller', 'venir', 'sembler', 'laisser', etc.

Going by the explanation above, it can be seen that all the modal verbs are also semi-auxiliary but not all the semi-auxiliary verbs are modal.

Hello , I am new here ..

I want to write TEF exam , and I want a minimum of B2 .

I have zero knowledge of French . I have downloaded Duolingo app which I have started using . Downloaded the google drive files that was shared here.

For the people who had zero knowledge and you pass the TEF exam , what was your strategy?

Can I learn French in 7months .. that is start learning now (May 2020) and write TEF exam in December 2020( this year ) ?

Currently A.F is not opened to new student yet because of this pandemic.

What the best way to learn faster ?

I need guidance . What can I use for self study ..
please help me .. I really need to get a good guidance.

@worltaker please don’t come with your to tobidam .. not interested..

Pls see these posts. Both were beginners, started from zero, there were physically classes then (which one attended), but most of the work was done alone....... at home. Extremely detailed.....materials used are contained therein.

I think several options have been given you already, maybe you are new here. We don't talk the way you talk. Your last remark is very appalling. You could have asked your questions without calling someone's name. There are many options of school to learn. Everyone to its taste. There are many here looking surprised at your remark. You may have a really really long journey to go in this French, if your first impression is like this.

Well I was not trying to be rude or spoil any body business.. i am a nice person , so for me to say this then I have my reasons . I checked the website out, hence I made up my mind ,so I to quickly let the person know I am not interested, instead of the person coming to market me . I notice when most people ask a question he or she quickly comment and recommend .

Hi sweetoma. Your experience is touching that's why I had to comment. Forget about the loss, think about the big picture. How do I get to Mapleland fast should occupy your mind. I will suggest either TEF and/CIMA if you can. For TEF, it's either you wait for AF to reopen and continue. But if you can't, I will suggest you go for an online school. I was like you last year, indecisive of what to do coupled with work. I was then introduced to Tobidam. I can confidently recommend the site, because I came out excellently in TEF early this year. My testimony is on this forum. I started then last year. Choose a private class if you want it to be intensive. Then along side , start preparing for CIMA. Just do all you can!! Canada a-must should henceforth be your slogan.

Peace!!!

Kindly help me friend.

I woke up to this mail this morning from WES (as attached above)

QUESTION 1:
What's does the message from WES mean and what is the solution, because even my school LASU doesn't seem to understand, they are even on lockdown inoperation. But Lasu said they courier my document using UPS.

QUESTION 2
My wife has her ECA & IELTALS ready. Mine is the delay. Should I just let her enter pool while start fixing my issues .
Is this a wise decision to allow her to go with my baby while she does spouse invite or I process the love-vendor entry since I have more age but more work experience, when all my issues or she does spouse invite?

QUESTION 3
I DONT HAVE A MEANS (email or phone) to contact WES. Can you help me with this?

I will really appreciate your responses friends as I'm getting discouraged.
