Memory Card that will be inside the phone is some people's idea of backup.
The day I lost my BB with my official docs without a backup, that was the day I learnt not to have impt files in a lone storage/without backup(s). Memory card is ok just to avoid loss of files should you run into a situation you'll have to force reset your device, otherwise, na same same.

if your phone was completely bricked as you trying to picture, recovery partition will be wiped out and only way to revive it will be flashing using authorized mi account. What happened if I guess right was that your system partition was formatted hence y that custom recovery was still on the phone
I can't say what happened but what I am sure of is that phone could boot to fastboot but there was no connection when plugged to the pc in fastboot mode. That means it was impossible to do any flash on fastboot since pc wasn't recognizing any connection
I tested my other phones and they were connecting fine.

That was where recovery helped.

Backup means: a copy of a file or other item of data made in case the original is lost or damaged.

Therefore, it's not safe for your memory card to be your backup.
Memory card for memory expansion not backup

My redmi note 8 network goes off after I updated to MIUI version 11.0.4.0

Wow I didn't have this issue when i updated yesterday. Try restarting the phone without inserting any sim card then restart the phone with sim card.

I thought that's more of hardware issue than a software, probably from the type or quality of the screen used in that batch. The only help I think that software fix could render is to initiate certain color blending that will conceal the defect on the affected areas, Other than that, that screen defect will always be there.
