Good evening Nairalanders, this is my first post though I been a guest who visits front page regularly. I stumbled on this thread recently and I saw the amazing advice, info and sincere help given to a lot of members on different issues.
Please I need an advice.
Sorry it's a lengthy one I studied Microbiology and since graduation I have been working in a bank like 9 years experience till I was advised to resign 7 years ago(I have been doing my own thing basically). I want to go back to my field to study Public Health but the little research I did and what I read here yesterday set my brain. I graduated with a 2.2 cgpa..3.31 that means no way for me in the MSc category. Please what should I do?? Which other courses and degrees of choice should I embark on? Is test of English compulsory for all the schools because I would prefer one that doesn't though if possible?I heard it's a long process from start to finish. Thank you

Please what's the acceptance rate of Vancouver Island University? I'd love to go for a masters in GIS application there.

Reasons for refusal were the same generic reasons:
1. Not convinced I will leave Canada based on current employment status.
2. Not convinced I have enough funds.

Sponsor (close relative with same surname) is a business man. He has transferred the entire tuition and upkeep for the 1st year into my account since January. Supported with his business account with very healthy inflow and outflow of over 50m each month, and his personal account with over 40m balance. So I don’t know what other funds are required.

Hello, please what documents did you submit?

Hello House

My profile is:
Age - 31
Degree - Electrical/Electronic Engineering
Experience - 7 years and counting in Construction in the middle east

I intend to take the study route to Canada by doing a diploma in IT which gives a 3 years post study visa. I have read about visa denials when one opts for diploma. Do I stand a good chance?

If I proceed, it will be fully self financed. Will that pose a problem during visa application? I intend to use my assets and properties in Nigeria as a proof of ties to Nigeria.

I'd appreciate your valuable contributions.

Any particular reason why are you going for a diploma in IT(apart from the 3 years post study visa)? Because you can also get that as long as you are going for a program with at least 2 years duration.
Back to the main issue at hand, you stand a better chance going for a course relating to your previous course of study or your present job experience. i.e you should go for masters or PGD in electrical electronics engineering related course or construction/building engineering. That way it will be much easier to convince the visa officer of your plans

My own opinion..
Firstly,
Most Univ. minimum requirements for Masters Admission is 2.1....

As regards Test Of English, its Not Compulsory, they do waive for Nigerian Applicants, cos NAIJA is an English Speaking Country.. But if u can get a LETTER OF CONFIRMATION OF PROFICIENCY IN ENGLISH LANGUAGE from d skool u graduated from, Stating that " all ur 4-5 years in skool, ur medium of instruction was in English Language, and ur Home Country is an English Speaking Country "

Secondly,
It all depends on what what u want, either to go for ...
- a PGD or PGC related to ur Banking experience

- and that ur own thing u talked about , if it's something that has a related program, go for it cos u gotta explain in SOP what u av bin doing for the past 7 years since u resigned, so as to cover those GAPS)

- u can also check out some PGD or PGC course that relates to MCB , Medical Lab Science, Biotechnology, Clinical programs, Ultrasound etc..

- u can also make enquiry about a Graduate Diploma in Public Health in Canadian Universities

Check out the following skools

- Graduate Universities Public Health
University of Victoria, British Columbia

- Graduate Diploma in Public Health
University of Guelph, Ontario

- Graduate Certificate in Public Health Leadership
Concordia University of Edmonton, Alberta

- Graduate Certificate in Public Health Strategic Communication
Concordia University of Edmonton, Alberta

- Graduate Certificate in Indigenous Public Health (Vancouver)
University of British Columbia, British Columbia

- Graduate Certificate in Public Health for Vulnerable Populations
Concordia University of Edmonton, Alberta

Find attached list of PGD/PGC programs in Canadian colleges in all province and check if there courses that relates to ur MCB Program or Banking Experience..

Good luck...

Thanks for the feedback. Aside the 3 years post study visa which is the main reason, I was considering the job market in Canada and thought an IT or business related course could give me an upper hand. I did not consider masters in engineering because it might not be relevant to get a job as I heard employers don't consider higher degrees. PGD is 1 year I believe, so it will not be possible. I will consider other construction/building related courses. I will appreciate any other insights. Thank you.

I recently discussed with my boss about my admission to study in Canada and if the company (my employer) for the past three years will stand as my sponsor, he agreed because I got a full scholarship and Teaching Assistant-ship job. My question is what documents do I request from my employer and what should I ask them to do to ensure my visa application is a success. Thanks

Lekiboboe:
Good morning y'all..

A quick one,

Can someone apply for a study permit even after paying 97% of his/her tuition fee..?
(Though I know its not compulsory to pay Tuition fee bfor apply for a Study Permit)

What warranted this question is that, Paying tuition fee in CANADIAN dollars from Nigeria didn't fall through, so we asked the skool, Can we pay in USD $, and they said YES...

So after doing the conversion of Tuition fee in USD dollars to Canadian dollar , it seemed sufficient enuf... But when the school sent the Payment receipt, there was a remaining balance of $344 CAD left.... I.e Tuition fee - $18,121CAD, got a receipt of $17,777 CAD..

I concluded probably it's the Charges here in Nigeria ( Form A), Senders charges & Charges of the Financial institution in Canada that affected that 18K CAD and ended with 17K CAD payment..

So is it safe to say ONE HAS PAID HIS/HER FULL TUITION FEE ,

Note:I Paid the Tuition fee with a DORM ACCOUNT

Thanks

Hello Lekiboboe,

It is no longer a full tuition fees but that shouldn't be a problem, just state the exact figure of the tuition cost and amount paid.

One love!

Hello Dovelove543,

It will be better to speak with your boss and have the intended funds for the sponsorship transferred to you. That way, you just be a self-sponsored applicant with the inclusion of your BS. Your boss can just write a Letter of Support attesting for for the funds and its genuine purpose.

All the best
