Not sure bond yields and money market returns may guarantee enough hedge against inflation in this low interest rate environment we find ourselves in

What kind of moderator are you that is so negative about Nigeria? How many Nigerians have been killed in their fatherland by Nigerian police? For God's sake, this is an international forum. Let's us be guided by our comments against motherland.
Are you for real? How can any honest minded Nigerian ask this sort of question? This is like asking if Nigerian politicians are corrupt.

International forum you say? Who doesn't know that Nigeria is a lawless country? They have embassies in Nigeria that report back to their home country weekly.

Did I mention your name? cheesy

If the shoe fits bro, WEAR IT!
Nah,you are the one that is looking for the possibility of survival of a returnee with a $30k life savings in Nigeria after spending a lifetime abroad,
So I guess the shoe was created for people in your category to wear.
Now before you claim you aren't in this category,I want you to know that it is impossible for a person not to be in a category and be worried about how people in that category will survive.
It's a fact.
Enjoy your new shoes.
Justwise, before you ban me,please see that he attacked first.
Thanks.

I don't really know how long you have lived outside Naija but if you can lower your standard of living abit, you can have a decent accomodation in a place like Ibadan. A 2 bedroom flat rent of 500- 700k naira per year in a good location should be manageable for you. You can stay in Ibadan and be running your business in Lagos. Even, many people are even commuting Lagos-Ibadan expressway almost everyday and I guess your situation will not be like that. You can also check farming out, I guess you can find nice location at Ibadan vicinities. Don't just go and spend too much to acquire property that will cost you more than necessary. To build 3 bedroom flat to a reasonable taste in Nigeria right now can't cost less than 7-10million naira

To invest, in case you have some trusted family and friends, invest in land properties right now and it can only appreciate in values for you while preparing to come back home.

And lastly don't venture into any business that you can't monitor or follow up upto 80%.

It would have been better if you have some real estate properties here in Naija, nevertheless, you have good amount of money with you, just spend it wisely. All the best.
wisdomiskey:
In light of all the racial ruckus in America, if one was to consider moving back home, what can $30,000 do for you in Nigeria in terms of property, lifestyle and business?

$30K is about N12M.

Honestly I don’t think it’s enough if you’re at ground zero.

But we each have acceptables and unacceptables. Only you know what you can tolerate.

If you’re fed up with the USA like I was then don’t kill yourself slowly over there.

Forget Lagos or Abuja and forget building a house. Come to Ibadan or go to Abeokuta or Ijebu ode. These are all pretty much satellite cities to Lagos.

In Elebu here in Ibadan, N200K will get you a nice pad. Use N1M to get a Corolla. Those returnees that are targeted are driving Range Rover, etc Anyone deserves to drive what they want but in Nigeria one has to be cautious. My ride is a well worn but mechanically sound 4Runner. You can’t look at me and what I drive and assume I’m a returnee. I like it like that.

Now you can start thinking of what you want to do to make money. I can’t help you there as I don’t know your temperament for business.

So long story short. I think you need more money but if that’s all you have then you can still come but you’ll need to make some adjustments.

Good luck.

Wherever we’re at, may our blessings find us.

Moving to Nigeria is a gradual process. It should take atleast 5 years of planning which involves going and coming back. This will offer you the opportunity to test your tolerance level. With $30k, budget $5k for long stories and disappointments. Most people who pack up and leave usually run back in less than a year.

I have all the resources to stay in Nigeria but a month at a time in Nigeria is more than enough. I get bored after one month.

There are some States where that $30K will turn you to an Emperor. In those places cost of living is very low. Do your research, come , establish a farming business i.e poultry, animal farm, piggery, cash crop farming, any thing you can think of.

Don't mind them, some of them talking down 30k USD that are living abroad can't even bold of 2k dollars as savings. Also, some Nigerians living in the country with less than 100k salary are even talking, can't just help but smh.

Op, don't be misguided. You know what you want that will make you happy. Life is bleeping short.

Pay them no attention and focus on the onces with valuable information.

Like I said before $30K is a lot of money if you plan well.

Visit first to explore the environment, don’t change your money to Naira at once else the value will diminish, rent a house first and plan your business ideas from there. If it doesn’t work out you can always go back to US if you have a means to do that.

That's my problem too. I tend to get frustrated with Nigeria after 3 weeks - a month.

It's just the current global crisis making me reconsider relocating. The honest truth is I don't feel secure in the white man's land any longer - I just want the best for my kids to come.

Hope it won't backfire if I go ahead. Nigeria too has it's own issues lipsrsealed

Pardon my ignorance but I've never been to Ibadan before - sounds like an old town.

Is there a large demographic of young people there? Are there multi-national companies and opportunities for employment there? etc..
Re: Can You Relocate To Nigeria With $30,000? by Nobody:
I guess you are not originally from South-west. I just used Ibadan as a case study because I know the city a bit. I will strongly advise you look for not-so-expensice city where you have been acclimatized with in the past before you travelled out to settle in. My point is that you should avoid those expensive places like Lekki or Abuja.

To answer your question, there are not so much Multi national companies there. I can mention the likes of BAT, P&G, maybe Zartech can be regarded as multinational as well. I don't think it's an old city. Anyway, In term of job opportunities, Lagos still beat Ibadan hands down. Sorry I can't give much, I only did my bachelor degree in Ibadan.

Modified: In everything you are doing, pls be extremely careful. Don't be defrauded. Good luck with everything sir.

$30,000 is too small especially if you have zero investments aside the 30k. You should budget $150k after you have built a home in the state you want to stay.
