I love programming. I hate programming jobs generally. If I could program all day I would love my job. But generally I spend more time in meetings and process and chasing down other people's issues and getting stuck when systems I don't control stop working and I can't move forward.

i don't agree with this. in my own opinion it's wrong. you can't say one will get rich cuz he/she lives among the rich

Alot of areas where rich people live and poor/less privileged people surround them

that's not a factor

na you wise pass for here jawe! its better to be a king in a poor area than being slave in a rich area

My man, buy that land and start building.
Don't even think about it twice. If you rent in an expensive place, you'll spend more trying to "keep up" and at the end of the day should an unfortunate thing happen to you or your finances, you realise you don't have a place of your own.

Like someone once said, "we're one major health problem away from being broke"

As noted elsewhere in my previous thread: https://www.nairaland.com/5829221/build-small-house-now-keep, I have been seriously considering building a house, but after a few inquiries and inspections, I discovered that I could only afford a land and build in remote area in my state.

The effect is that my neighbours and everyone in my vicinity will be of low income or lower middle class. This effect is seen in churches, schools etc around there too.

Personally, I don't care about this but my elder brother will not allow me to rest. According to him, "Nigga, you like village too much, leave that place," he is of the opinion that I should even leave the state entirely-- he is New York based anyway.

NOW, these thoughts have been in my subconscious mind, having subliminal effects on me.

Considering, that this great forum has people from all walks of life, I have decided to bring this issue here: TO WHAT EXTENT DOES ONE'S RESIDENT ENVIRONMENT AFFECT HIM especially with regard to finance.

Should I forget about building now-- since I can only afford to build in a remote area now-- and rent in a highbrow, upscale area?

What are the advantages or disadvantages of living among the rich.

Thanks.
Nigerians love using the abroad-relative/abroad-resident phenomena to build social stutus, especially on this forum. Why?

As per your post, your brother is correct. Stay around people who are equal with you mentally, or are the type you aspire to be equal with. Staying with people that are different will lead to a lot of disagreement, - especially when you are dealing with Nigerians who love imposing their opinion on others.

I will speak for myself and my experience.

I live in such a neighborhood and I love it. The calibre of people I have met just walking down my street is something that would never have been possible if I was living in low-income neighbourhoods.

Twice, I have gotten job offers without any mention of cv. One of them works closely with the governor, the other owns a radio station.
The people that offered me this job did not know me from Adam, they only know I am a neighbour.

Besides, nothing beats the inspiration gotten from walking around your neighbourhood and seeing beautiful mansions, clean streets, and breathtaking landscaping.

The quiet, the serenity, the security is something I will not trade.

The sun even hits different here walahi grin grin

Please, don't do it if you can't afford it. But if social mobility is your thing, then it should definitely be an option.

Living in an upscale area completely useless, unless u are doing business around that environment or it's adding sm value to u beyond the superficial idea and hype of I live among the rich.

It will however affect ur kids and their immediate environment does have an effect on them unless ure a good hands on parent then u can even live on the SOUTH POLE and have significantly exposed and well groomed kids bt that is assuming u already have the Necessary exposure ur self.

Living among the rich only gives u exposure, maybe inspiration BUT It doesn't not give u money or make u rich, ideas give u money.

It's doesn't not guarantee u good neighbours or frnds either. That can happen anywhere else.

It's does change ur mentality bt that's if uve never had such level of exposure b4. Just like when u travel out to more civilized countries.

Asides this there is nothing really special unless like i said it has direct or indirect financial impact on ur goals, business and direction in life. Building or buying ur own house is top priority trust me. Fancy life can wait.

Besides the skols for ur kids. U can build a great place in the village and still have perfectly balanced and exposed life style because the world is already a global VILLAGE like they say.

My brother for security reasons live where you can easily blend. If you build in such a place you will be like a goldfish. I have seen quite a lot of people that built to taste in such places but couldn't live there. Build and use the rent to pay in a saner environment.

It works, you must however be ready to hold your own and respect the lines.
For those with family, the kind of mentality your children will have growing up in such environment will be helpful, compare to the village.

Hmmmm...I get you. Culture is actually the way of life that we assimilate from out environment. If a leaf stays too long on a soap, it ends up turning to a soap. Soon enough, your style of eating changes, your mode of dressing changes, etc. It is like moving from Nigeria to Canada, you will eventually integrate into the system...nasty weather and all.

Back to the neighbourhood talk, moving to this neighbourhood is with the assumption that you have the minimum requirement to live or own a property among them.

For example, I used to work in an office where I was like the most fashionable employee. It was a big company o yet I was always the face of the coy when meeting clients in my unit. Then I moved to a much smaller org where the girls there nicknamed me oldie. My style was considered not trendy. I had to gradually change pieces and rematch my wardrobe to blend in. Again, this was possible because I had the minimum requirement to gradually blend in.
I agree some people can adjust and at times the environment will rub off on people in a positive (or negative) way but not everyone can blend in everywhere. While it is relatively easy to change your wardrobe, it is more difficult to blend in in other ways. I have been in many awkward situations observing people who would try to blend in and not understand why they would not.

I am not against social mobility. I don't even think everyone must blend in with the 'elites' but it helps to know that social upward mobility comes with challenges, so does downward social mobility of course with the difference that those moving down do not feel the desire to fit in as much.

@covid19, US is different from Naija. Why do people want to leave the hood and not go back? Your ZIP code is priceless. Please do as much as you can to live in an area with good schools and good health facilities. Your neighborhood determines your facilities in the US.

You can build the house for a start. You don’t have to live there but at least you’ll have some sort of comfort knowing that worse case you’ll move in there. I’m not so much of a fan of living in poor neighbourhoods or neighbourhoods that are underdeveloped. The reason being that if you aren’t careful you may get influenced by the neighbourhood. One of the reasons Nigerians behave the way we do (Queue up for stomach infrastructure , accept anything no matter how bad , etc) is because of our environment. In a dilapidated environment your kids are not likely to gain the exposure, confidence and thought process expected of a 21st century child. Not everything is about naira and kobo . Sometimes we need to analyse things holistically before taking a decision.

How can you use an obscene amount of money for rent when you can make a lifetime investment and live rent free? It's simple logic forget all this living with the rich, a wise man once said 'cut your coat according to your cloth'. Don't go and live somewhere where you'll end up with hbp while trying to keep up with the Joneses.

A word is enough for the wise.
When you have tasted two sides of the coin, then you will know how to give good advice.

Firstly,
Investing in housing is never a waste, housing is one of the few commodity that appreciates with time ,you'll get your investment from it,reap the steady and constant interest, your children and grandchildren will do same.
Secondly,
I'll advice you to build a building for renting purposes rather than for your residential purpose.
One bedroom flats and self contained houses are most rented out apartments anywhere in Nigeria,be it in a poor or rich environment, there are classes of people that fit these apartments.
In five years time you'll be smiling to the bank when your alert keep dropping.
By the way,if you're convinced that staying in a rich environment will boost your social life, you can rent an apartment there and build your rental apartments where your cost will reach . It's killing two birds with one stone.
Re: Does Living Among The Rich Affect One's Social Mobility, Finances Etc? by Farki: 8:44pm On Jun 03, 2020
Hold on the house is an investment and not your permanent residence? If you build now the area could get more developed and increase the value of the property.

But remember that carries it's own risk.

To be very honest living near rich people doesn't mean their wealth essence will rub off on you. You could get more opportunities and favours if you get acquainted with them but simply living near them is no guarantee.
