WHAT IS COPYWRITING?

Now, we get into the meat and potatoes of this thread.

Don’t forget, the sole aim of this thread is to show you how to hone your email copywriting skill so you can start writing emails for clients and filling your bank account with moolah in the process.

Now, email copywriting is a smaller branch of the big bad guy COPYWRITING.

It’s like saying Benin City is a city under Edo State…

You feel me?

Before we swing fully into the email copywriting side of things, let’s run the rule over Copywriting in general.

This is especially important for you if you are new to all of this.

So… What really is copywriting?

Described as Gary Halbert, legendary copywriter, as the most lucrative skill in the world…

There are a thousand and one definitions out there on the internet about this topic.

But here is one that succinctly describes it best:

Copywriting is salesmanship in print.

And I’ll flesh that out with examples in a bit.

But before I do that, I’d also like to throw in my simple, dumbed-down definition:

“Copywriting is the kind of writing that is done to PROVOKE readers into taking an action.”

The action could be for them to click a link on an AD…

It could be to get them to subscribe to an EMAIL LIST…

It could also be to get them to click a link inside an email…

It could equally be to get them to buy whatever it is you are selling…

This kind of writing is different from writing to entertain people.

Okay, let’s go back to the first definition… that is the “salesmanship in print” definition.

Before the internet became a popular medium, one of the most popular ways of selling was via door-to-door campaigns.

The people who engaged in this practice were called salesmen.

And more often than not, they had a script they were trying to convince prospects from.

With the advent of the internet, this kind of selling was relegated to the background.

And now, with WORDS written on a page on the internet, anyone could reach a larger audience and make hundreds of thousands of dollars from selling their stuff.

Every online business needs copywriting.

And so people (copywriters) who can write words that CONVINCE people to whip out their wallets and buy whatever you are selling became hot properties.

There is something called direct response copywriting (that’s your assignment for today: Google this yourself and see what it means).

One of the highest direct response copywriters in the world, passed away just last month. His name was Clayton Makepeace. He used to make serious MILLIONS every year as a direct response copywriter!

Now, I have to let you know that a lot of the money Mr. Makepeace earned came from something called ROYALTIES.

That is, businesses pay him a pre-agreed amount for every sale the copy he wrote for them brought in.

That is discounting the original fee they paid for him to initially write their package (which is usually in the six figure dollars range).

Then there is Dan Kennedy – I think he is currently the #1 copywriter in the world right now that Mr. Makepeace has gone to rest.

Then there is this African-American lady, Carline Anglade-Cole, who makes at least $1M a year writing for clients as a copywriter (here is her website: carlinecole.com).

Then there is another guy called David Garfinkel who charges $25,000 for copywriting mentorship… and he charges businesses up to $100K to write their packages!

Now, why am I giving you all of these examples?

I just want to show you that putting in the work to become a great copywriter can be a very, very rewarding experience.

You may be wondering, why will businesses invest all these huge sums into one person to help them just sting common words together?

Well, imagine this…

If I paid you $100 to write one email for me…

And I send that email to my audience to sell them a $97 dollar product…

If that your one email brings in 10 sales, that makes up $970, right?

Now, I only paid you $100 to work your magic on my email.

Have I not now made a profit of $870?

That is how business owners think.

And that is why if you are DARN GOOD at what you do, they are ready to ‘chuck’ thick wads into your hands so you can write words that help them make money.

Now there are VARIOUS forms of copywriting out there:

AD copywriting – where you write ads for business owners. Ads like FB ads, instagram ads, Google ads, banner ads etc.

Email Copywriting – where you will help businesses write emails to sell their products to their EMAIL LIST.

Sales Letter Copywriting – Where you will write relatively long (7 pages and above) copies that are meant to sell a product on a WEB PAGE.

VSL Copywriting – VSL means Video Sales Letter. You will write video scripts for a video sales letter.

And so much more.

Now, you could decide to learn all these arms of copywriting in one fell swoop.

But the truth is, it’s going to take time, effort, and money to fully cut your teeth as a do-it-all copywriter.

So my simple advice to anyone trying to profit as a copywriter is to learn email writing first.

For me, it’s like the low-hanging fruit of copywriting.

Once you have a grasp of what ticks people… what emotions drive response… what people want to hear…

It becomes easier for you when you start moving up the ladder into mainstream copywriting.

I hope you understand this.

The whole essence of this particular lesson was to give you a sweeping view of copywriting and get you into the mind of a copywriter.

I don’t know if I have done a good job of it.

If I have not, I hope as we continue to progress you start to gain clarity.

But like I will always say, you can learn from various sources. So put your research skill into effect and start to gain clarity on what it means to become a copywriter.

Alternatively, you can post your hard-nosed questions as a comment below, and I’ll do my best to do much justice to it.

That’s all for now.

2 more lessons falling in today, once I have had the chance to edit them.

Stay tuned. Stay blessed.

prolific has become a game of strong head. You need determination to scale through now. I'm not getting anything again and my new accounts don't get. But if you get PC and nothing will interrupt your connection, EXPRESS VPN is the best. Many people are getting testimony.

Don't plan to make money there now so as not to frustrate yourself cheesy cheesy

Direct response copywriting is the process of writing sales copy that has the goal of getting an immediate response from the customer.

This is one of the reasons why direct response is looked at so highly in the writing and business world. The writer themself is responsible for all of the sales and results generated by the copy.

Why Email Copywriting?

Since you now have a grasp of what Copywriting is all about…

Let’s now aim our focus at the email copywriting part of things.

So… Why Are We Focused on Email Copywriting?

I’ll tell you a short story to spell out the number one point for you…

When I started on Fiverr in 2016, the main gig I was selling was an email copywriting gig.

My first ever order was gotten from the buyer’s section of Fiverr…

And it was a project to write THIRTY EMAILS for $120!

I did that job to the best of my ability.

It took me 3 days of back-breaking work to complete and send my work to the client.

He went over it, marked the order as complete, and proceeded to give me a five-star review.

Not only that, He also referred his students to me. And over the next couple of weeks, I was busy writing emails for this man’s students.

Some wanted 30 emails…

Some wanted 18…

Others wanted 12…

And some others wanted just 7.

Pay attention, please.

Fast forward to 2017…

I got this project on Upwork…

As you can see, another THIRTY emails and this time I wrote each of them for $40 (that was in 2017. I no longer charge that amount per email).

This is just one project. Over N300K to write emails.

Guess how many weeks it took me to write these emails?

Less than 2 weeks.

In case you haven’t picked up on the point I am trying to make, here it is…

When clients want an email copywriter to do a job for them they are mostly going to hire you to write NOT one, two, or 3 emails.

90% of the time, you will be writing from at least 5 emails and above.

Imagine if your rate to write one email as a beginner is $25…

Are you starting to get the point?

The #1 reason I love email copywriting is that there is VOLUME in each project you undertake.

And volume means more money. Kapish?

The SECOND REASON I love email copywriting is because the learning curve is NOT as steep.

If you were going to learn to become a really good do-it-all copywriter, you’d need to pour in hours, weeks, and months of dedicated effort into it before you can have the confidence to start charging clients for your skills.

You will have to read classic copywriting books…

You will have to handwrite classic sales copy everyday…

You will have to tattoo a number of hard rules to your memory…

You will have to lap up a heap of formulas, frameworks, and so on.

Then maybe, later on, you’d have to engage the services of a mentor (and blast it! That doesn’t come cheap).

But if you decided to take a chip – email copywriting in this case, - out of the BIG BLOCK and focus on it, you won’t need months to get up to speed.

In as little as a month, you can become a really, really good email copywriter capable of helping clients literally print out money each time they send your emails to their list.

That’s another reason I love email copywriting – it doesn’t require much learning.

The THIRD reason is that emails are fun to write.

Unlike other forms of copywriting projects where you have to be guided in what you write, you can actually be informal with your emails.

You can have fun…

You could just decide to write about your day and at the end link in something for people to buy and they will.

They are also really easy to write once you get the hang of it.

These days, I can crank out a winning email in less than 25 minutes (I hope that doesn’t make me sound like a braggart).

The FOURTH reason is that…

There is a constant demand for email copywriting work.

Take a stroll to the job feed of Upwork right now (if you have an Upwork account) and type in “email copywriting” or “email copywriter” and observe the job feed.

Or go on Craigslist and do the same.

People are always looking for badass email copywriters to help them squeeze out as much profits as possible from their lists.

So if you jump in, you are going to be jumping into a market that is really HOT.

Another reason I love this is that you can do this without a LAPTOP.

Yes, unlike most other services you can render that require you to have a laptop, becoming an email copywriter doesn’t hold you to that rule.

Just download WORD DOCS and GOOGLE DOCS on your phone and you are ready to blast off.

There are many more reasons why I love email copywriting. But these should give you a glimpse of some of the main benefits of email copywriting and why I think it makes sense to jump on it.

A Breakdown of How You Could Do At Least $1K As An Email Copywriter Every Month...

Now the main goal of this thread is to get you to $1K/month as an email copywriter as soon as possible.

To help you achieve that, I will be sharing templates and other resources soon.

But before that, I want to give you a breakdown of an easy-to-follow $1K/month plan as an email copywriter.

So, as a beginner…

Let’s say you start on a platform like Upwork and start charging between $20 - $45 per email depending on your confidence level and depending on what clients' assent to pay for your service (some clients are just difficult to convince).

What that means is that…

To do $1K/month, you need to write like 60 emails on average (considering the Upwork service fee).

Let’s also assume that for each project you get to write 5 emails on average…

That’d mean you only need 12 email copywriting jobs per month to hit $1K.

If we go further ahead to break down the month into weeks, that would mean you need to do $250 every week to meet your goal.

That also means all you need is just 3 email copywriting jobs per week to hit your $1K/month goal.

Does that make sense?

Do you think doing $250/week is feasible?

Now, this is not set in stone that your earning will follow this pattern exactly.

But planning like this and breaking it down into bits is incredibly powerful. It gives you clarity on what to do each day, each week to hit your goal.

BOOM! That was the introductory part of this thread.

So here is what you need to start making money as an email copywriter:

~ A phone, tablet, or PC…
~ An ability to string simple words together.
~ A freelancing account on any freelancing platform of your choice.

And that’s all.

In a couple of days’ time, I will post more lessons that focus more on honing this skill.

As always, stay tuned, stay blessed… and ask questions if you need clarity.

/Peace, Love, & Light/

~Victor.

One of the secrets of becoming a great copywriter? Write every freaking day!

AIIyIic and Onyeniyijk...

Nice to see that you both took that assignment seriously and conducted your own research. Kudos.

Did you check out ma'am Carline Cole?

I want you to see how wacky and ghetto-ish she writes... yet her sales copies pull in millions for her clients every year... and more importantly, she makes a good income from doing it.

That is another important point:

Writing grammatically-correct English or beautiful poetry is not the goal of copywriting.

As a copywriter, your work is to write strong sales promotion ---- Carline Cole

So as to prepare before everything, Which platform is the best for us to sign up? Upwork or Fiverr? I heard upwork is the best, but their acceptance is difficult. Is their a backdoor for us to skip this. And should we open Black account or oyinbo account?

Thanks Boss Venzal

Thanks boss for the lectures so far.

We actually learn every single day.

An average of how many words makes up a good well thought out copy? Does it run into pages?or kept simple, brief and precise?

~Victor.

Wow, I'm literally jumping for joy right now. May God increase you in every area. I appreciate

Boss you are absolutely correct about the fun in writing email copywriting. There was a time I applied for paylater loan, although I wasn't given the loan, I couldn't unsubscribe from their email list because the person writing it was absolutely funny and good. See some of the screenshot below grin

And yes, you can shine with a Nigerian account. But if you think you want to use a foreign account and can actually pull it off, no problem. This time I am not deciding for people what they can do and not do in terms of platform. My sole focus is showing you how to hone the skill.
