kahal29:
President Muhammadu Buhari has approved the nomination of Ngozi Okonjo Iweala, former coordinating minister for the economy, for the position of director-general of the World Trade Organisation (WTO), TheCable can report.

In a document seen by TheCable on Thursday, Buhari withdrew the candidacy of Yonov Frederick Agah, Nigeria’s permanent representative to WTO, for the same position.

The election is scheduled to hold in Geneva, Switzerland in 2021 for a four-year term that would run from 2021 to 2025 after Roberto Azevedo, former director-general of the organisation stepped down a year to the end of his second term.

“The embassy of the Federal Republic of Nigeria and permanent mission to the African Union (AU) and United Nations Economic Commission for Africa (UNECA) presents compliments to all embassies and permanent missions in Addis Ababa and has the honour to inform that the Federal Government of Nigeria has withdrawn the candidacy of Ambassador Yonov Frederick Agah for election to the position of director-general of the World Trade Organisation (WTO),” the letter seen by TheCable read.

“Nigeria is therefore pleased to request the support of esteemed AU member states as well as permanent missions and embassies in Addis Ababa in favour of the candidacy of Okonjo-Iweala.”

Agah is Nigeria’s permanent representative to the WTO and WTO’s deputy director-general.

Okonjo-Iweala currently chairs the Global Alliance for Vaccines and Immunization (GAVI), a public-private global health partnership with the goal of increasing access to immunisation in poor countries.

She also sits on the board of Twitter and is a former managing director (operations) at the World Bank.

On March 7, President Cyril Ramaphosa of South Africa appointed her a member of the country’s economic advisory council.

A month later on April 10, Kristalina Georgieva, the managing director of the International Monetary Fund (IMF), named Okonjo-Iweala a member of the fund’s external advisory group.

Okonjo-Iweala is one of the four special envoys appointed by the African Union (AU) on April 12 to mobilise international support for its efforts toward addressing the coronavirus pandemic.

In 2012, she contested to become World Bank president becoming the first female and first black candidate.

She was listed among one of the top 100 most powerful women in the world by Forbes four consecutive times from 2011 to 2014. She was also listed as one of the top 100 most influential people in the world by TIME magazine in 2014.

You are indeed very intelligent, I hope the government finds you soon and compensate you with a juicy appointment. Congrats in advance
OChimex:

The point is, they are not even trying to appoint them. Let them appoint them and let them reject it, then they know they have done their parts. but hell no.

Come on Mr. ask yourself a question who amongst the appointee in this present government is intelligent and doing wonderfully well like any of those guys they are loaning to the international teams? At least appoint those proven smart guys at the international level if possible all.

Super eagle is inviting all Nigerians doing exceptionally well outside to come play for them, and they won't stop inviting any talent outside.

If you were a team and all your loanee players are doing exceptionally well outsides won't you want to recall them back into the team?

After all, Real maldrid once had all the world best players in their team at a particular time.

Hmmm. I doubt if Buhari would want to nominate a former member of GEJ's cabinet. If it's true, then congratulations to her. But why should we continue to recycle same individuals for so many years?
. It is a world wide job and position that requires some one who has the right international clout, or do you have a better candidate?

Kudos to the president for this kind gesture. At least, Igbos can now let us rest on this forum. Those among them praying for the downfall of Adesina simply because he’s from the south west can now get preoccupied with praying for their Igbo daughter’s success.

I can also bet nobody will talk about nepotism on this thread. The fact that the president withdrew support from Yonov Agah, a Nigerian from the north central and now supports an Igbo lady should not go unnoticed. If it was the other way round, the fury of hell fire would be a child’s play to what they would bring down tonight. I wish her the best in the election.
. Thank you, but the name, yonov Agah, have you heard it before now? I want to believe the answer is no, you know where I am heading to, you are a smart man, peace.

This time if you pay attention, you can see that she was only nominated for election. The reason is obvious, she's strong and can easily win the election for Naija. The first guy might just be a paper weight guy.

Gambari appears more nationalistic than Abba Kyari

Gambari appears more nationalistic than Abba Kyari for substituting the name of a Nigerian from North Central with that of your tribe's woman. If the name of an Ibo man had been substituted with the name of Igalla man or Tiv or Ebira from North Central, nairaland server would have crashed today. There would have been pandemonium on social media. The South East bloc of both Senate and House of Reps would have rejected the decision and made an objection. Various programs on different FM radio stations being anchored by IBOs would have gone on rampage this evening and tomorrow morning.

If I were the man, I will just resign from WTO and seek refuge in another country. This is an injustice. Col Abubakar Umar (rtd) should tell us his stand. This is more than the confirmation of Justice Monica Mensem as Chief Justice of the Appeal Court.

A sprinkling of Igbos in Delta state.

Absolutely no Igbos in Cross River and Akwa Ibom States.

You could probably have a lot of similarities among the border communities but the distinction is quite clear.

Great research you have here.

But it is what it is.

Very academic.

I still stand by my position. There are no Igbo communities in Akwa Ibom state. Non also in Cross River State. The areas mentioned in your quote are border towns of Akwa Ibom and it's neighbouring states.

In Ukanafun, they have borders with some Abia communities like Azumini and over the years they have intermarried and traded together. They can also speak the language as a result of proximity.

In Akwa Ibom state you also have Itu Mbon Uso, a community that speaks its own very unique language which the Akwa Ibom man of Ibibio, Annang and Oron extraction may not understand.

Along the Ikot Ekpene - Umuahia axis there is area one communities that border with Akwa Ibom under the Ikwuano LGA of Abia State. The firs village on entering Abia is called Arian and it is famous for its weekly market. Many residents of these communities thrive in trade using this market as a platform. They speak the Igbo language fluently on the basis of the interrelationships. But they are not Igbo.

Approaching Rivers from Akwa Ibom you have the Andoni people who are not Rivers but Akwa Ibom people. They have never claimed to be Rivers and Rivers has never requested for them.

Opobo is another border town which people misrepresent but thankfully has been clarified.

In Itu LGA you have the Oku Iboku communities which is the border town for Akwa Ibom. There has been a raging land battle between this community and it's counterpart in Cross River State; Ikot Offiong Ambai.

Summarily, I respect the fact that you took some time to conduct an 'online based' research which is quite interesting but yet very flawed. Online research has some social value but not provide the hard facts that an on-ground experience will reveal.

I have visited all these places I have mentioned and have had discourses with the indigenes.

As a matter of fact you dare not go to Ikot Umoh Essien, Akwa Ibom border with Ngwa land of Abia State and call them Igbos even mistakenly. You may not survive to tell the tale yourself. Sadly another community battle will ensue and there is no telling when it will be quelled.

No other Nigerian stands a chance for the position and that is why Egypt wants her disqualified so that their candidate can easily sweep the election result.
