Retailers are driven by profits, not emotions.
90% of retailers will buy 15k local rice to retail than to buy 33k foreign rice to retail because they will make more profits on the local one of 15k.
Retailers will go to market and buy the cheap one to sell because of the margin they will make, not caring which is imported or not.
If 90% of petty traders are buying the cheaper one to retail, where will the poor masses now see the foreign one to buy in cups when it is barely available in the market?
Is it not what you see that you will buy? undecided

I do pity farmers a lot, I wish there was a system in place for them to also earn some form of pension at the end of their farming years. Like a contributory pension fund where whatever amount they put in government adds the same amount, that hopefully will encourage them to save for the future and make their last days a lot easier when the strength to lift their cutlass is no longer there.

You are very correct,
but in the absent of government support they can invest their savings for a better tomorrow . We are having an influx of young farmers dey shouldn't eat with all their hands as sweet as harvest maybe savings and investment should be a culture.

Many people wen go school non sabi investment is it farmers that will now know what to invest in?
Except there is a deliberate policy to make that happen, I do not see it happening.
I really hate to see farmers poor, it pains me a lot considering their product is more important than a mobile phone.

If you need help with clearing a container,go apapa and look for an agent.
You can discuss trucking and clearing with him.
Je will give you his quote, then you go to other agents and get their quotes..compare them and pick the cheapest then you import.

Union have power only in their markets they control.
Different markets have different unions for different items.
What union can do is that they will make sure you don't sell in any market around lagos by calling their correspondents in the market you are leaving theirs for and you will get same treatment.
But if you have your customers already and can align with them when goods are scarce, they will come to wherever you are offloading and carry the product there and union won't know.
Not like they can do anything but for future purposes because scarcity won't last forever.
When normalcy returns, they can deny you from operating in the market again, that's all.
Cartel like say them go come shoot gun for where you dey offload undecided

Apple is containerised in reefer(container with fridge),like small round grapes, imported fresh foods,fish,etc....
Nobody can tell which is which in the container till it gets to the markets and people take to the market in lagos because that's where cold rooms are located for storage.
During scarcity caused by muslim fasting,it gets scarce and customers can do anything for products.
So you take the product to another place other than market since you don't need storage in cold rooms because clients are ready to buy immediately,so you can avoid coldroom rent and offload levy in the market.
What you don't know, ask and learn than to be running your mouth.
Everything is not kerosene business.

Blessamaka:

My post might be lengthy but I'll try my best to be brief but please read to the end.

I'm in my early twenties (20's) and currently a student in one of the prestigious university in Nigeria.

Before I got admission, I usually help my mum to sell onions in Ajegunle market aka boundary market in Lagos State.

Ever since schools were shut down due to the pandemic I've been scared of helping my mum because of the despicable rules or laws guiding the business which i might not be able to keep to it thereby putting my mum in trouble and that's the only means of survival for me and mum for now.

My mum belongs to a group of people that sells same product and they are usually referred to as Union and the leaders are the one dishing out those annoying laws.

Examples of such laws are:

1. You don't buy more than the quantity of goods apportioned to you else you will be fined and suspended from selling but the so called leaders go contrary to these laws

2. They tell you when to buy goods i.e before buying new goods, you sell your old goods for 7days not minding if the quantity apportioned to you is enough or not. My self as a case study, we were apportioned 3 bags of onions and I sell 3 bags in 3 days so me and my mum would stay at home for 4days before going to buy new goods.

3. They tell you when to start selling which is 10:00am everyday excluding Sunday and this law was before the pandemic

4. They tell you how to sell i.e the size of onions you are to sell for a particular amount as if they borrowed you money or they are the one giving you money always to buy goods.

And many more of these unimaginable laws. Right now I confused! I don't know the best way to go about this and I really do wish to start selling because I'm broke and I've so many responsibilities to care for financially.

I need legal help, advice on how to go about this until I get something else to do or probably a work or a different business.

The reason for going into business is to make profit and save for rainy days but the reverse seems to be the case here.

Please help me move to front page to get more reviews in regard to this.

No one argued about the existence of unions.
We were talking about times of scarcity.
From what you posted, you clearly see that union powers end only in those markets. They can't do nothing to you outside that market.
Now in time of scarcity, there is demand but little or no supply. This forces your customers to be desperate and can go out of their way to get goods,so you arrange with them at the place you will offload to sell to them there so that you can dodge union fees, offload fees, marching ground boys and coldroom rent that is expensive as you won't need it because customers for it are already present with cash and their small buses so no need for storage.
The only reason we use to hide from union is that scarcity won't last forever like I said.
Fasting will end and everything will return to normal and you will no longer be able to corner clients again because everyone now has goods to sell and they will prefer going to the market because it is cheaper for them.
Now if you have pissed off union in the time of scarcity, they can manipulate and make you not be able to sell again in that market, that is where their power ends.In the market, finish. Not that union will come and hold you while offloading bla bla bla...trash.
His irish potato talk is not true about how they hoard potato to hike price in trucks.
How do you hoard potato in trucks that can get rotten at anytime undecided
If at all you want to hoard, the owner will ask you to pay him upfront so he can escape the thing spoiling under his custody else he moves his produce to another market and union has lost commission from here.

Ahiboilandgas was talking about trailer loads of Irish potatoes waiting to enter the union regulated market and here you are talking about carrying apples to Ajao Estate.

Can u explain how a trailer of potatoes will be allowed into Ajao estate as compared to carton of apple.

Can u explain how everyone in Ajao estate will all come out to gather around a potato trailer to buy all the goods before they perish.

As the owner of Ajao estate and the Lord of Lagos who determines that market can be anywhere away from unions and sales can happen quickly no matter the size and number of goods, which other estates would you recommend all other 20 trucks waiting to head to so that the union will not control their sales.

I hope u are aware that those imported apples can be in your house for months too. If it were the truck of potatoes, do u have storage options in your house?
