It saddens my heart watch helpless civilians die like chicken. But I doubt if they have the balls to do so; it’s on Nairaland that they can brag !! 2 Likes |

ANTI-BANDITRY OPERATIONS: NAF COMMISSIONS NEW HELIPAD AT KATARI VILLAGE TO ENHANCE AIR POWER EMPLOYMENT IN KADUNA STATE, ENVIRONS In furtherance of its aggressive efforts to rid the North West and North Central States of armed banditry and other forms of criminality through timely employment of Air Power and air mobility of forces for swift response, the Nigerian Air Force (NAF) today, 12 June 2020, commissioned a Helipad at Katari Village in Kachia Local Government Area (LGA) of Kaduna State. The Helipad, along with its refueling facilities, was constructed by the NAF, in collaboration with the Kaduna State Government, to give the helicopter platforms operating along Abuja-Kaduna Highway and environs added endurance for efficient mission accomplishment. Today’s commissioning is coming up 24 hours after the commissioning of infrastructural facilities at 271 NAF Detachment Birnin Gwari for the well-being of personnel in the forefront of prosecuting the war against banditry in the area. While commissioning the newly constructed Helipad, the Chief of the Air Staff (CAS), Air Marshal Sadique Abubakar, who was represented by the Air Officer Commanding Air Training Command (AOC ATC), Air Vice Marshal (AVM) Musa Muktar, disclosed that the Helipad was considered a necessary requirement for extending the NAF’s reach to enhance its Air Power projection in the North West and North Central Zones. He noted that this would add impetus to the Defence Headquarters (DHQ)-led joint Operation THUNDER STRIKE and afford greater flexibility for all agencies involved, as the helicopters would no longer need to return to either Abuja or Kaduna before refueling. The CAS stated further that the location of the landing facility was also carefully selected to complement the efforts of troops’ deployment thereby intensifying the provision of security to the locals and motorists. Speaking further, Air Marshal Abubakar noted that, since the establishment of the Operation THUNDER STRIKE, over 4 months ago, the activities of kidnappers and bandits along Abuja-Kaduna Highway had reduced significantly. He stated that, with the establishment of the Helipad, the NAF was even better positioned to more effectively deal with kidnappers and armed robbers along the Kaduna-Abuja Highway as well as any other form of criminality within Kaduna State and its environs, working in synergy with sister Services and other security agencies. He similarly observed that the NAF’s air offensives in Katsina, Kaduna, Zamfara, Sokoto and Niger States, amongst others, had continued to add value to the current efforts at addressing insecurity issues in the North West and North Central Zones of the Country. The CAS expressed the NAF's profound gratitude to the Commander-in-Chief of the Armed Forces, President Muhammadu Buhari, for his unflinching support to the Service towards the achievement of its desired Air Power goals. This support, he noted, was an indication that the whole Nation stands by the NAF and other security agencies in the fight against terrorism and other forms of criminality. “Much as we have sacrificed, the Service remains propelled by the goodwill of the support of all well-meaning Nigerians, to do more in securing our Nation. We must therefore continue to give our best at all times”, he added. While appreciating the Executive Governor of Kaduna State, Mallam Nasiru El-Rufai, for his constant support to the NAF’s operations, the CAS also commended the efforts of the AOC, officers, airmen and airwomen of ATC in ongoing operations in the Command’s Area of Responsibility. Earlier in his welcome address, the Command Operations Officer ATC, Air Commodore Nnaemeka Ilo, stated that the new Helipad, whilst serving as a base for Sector 2 of Operation THUNDER STRIKE, would undoubtedly further boost the efforts in tackling insecurity in the area. He noted that the collective efforts of the Air and Ground Components of Operation THUNDER STRIKE, facilitated by the provision of timely intelligence from the public, had yielded tangible results thereby enabling safe passage of motorists along the Abuja-Kaduna Highway. “Since the inception of this Operation, our troops have succeeded in frustrating the efforts of the criminal elements. We are now adopting a new strategy of taking the fight to their various camps and not waiting for them to come to the main road before striking”, he said. In his remarks, the Chairman Kachia LGA, Honourable Peter Agite, while commending the NAF leadership for its efforts in fighting insecurity, stated that the Helipad would go a long way in addressing security challenges not only along the Abuja-Kaduna-Kachia axis but also other parts of Kaduna State. He therefore called on all members of the affected communities to cooperate with the NAF and other security agencies by provide useful and timely information. Also present at the event were the Commander Operation THUNDER STRIKE, Principal Staff Officers of ATC as well as Traditional Rulers and Community Leaders of Katari and surrounding Communities. Toju200: If air strikes could end an insurgency then the Taliban would have been overcome a long time ago, the same goes for ISIS in Syria and Iraq. The French air force has everything to control the skies over Mali, Niger and Burkina. But the Jihadists are still alive and kicking. The War in the NE will not be won with limited air strikes on a very fluid and mobile insurgent group. Even when they are identified they bunker down and the strikes get some but not all. Our strategy seems conventional and reactive. How can Boko come into an area and operate for 2 hours with 10 gun trucks. Particularly on a well known highway and some how get away. Something is clearly not right. Boko and ISWAP are not afraid to ambush our convoys WHY. And it doesn't seem to be just IED's that give them the advantage. We saw a general and three Battalions with three big heavy MRAP's bogged down by 10-15 Boko gun trucks not too long ago. The NA admitted essentially to being overwhelmed at the time. The French are carrying out Operation Barkhan following operation Serval and to date have lost 41 soldiers that's over 7 years. We have about 21 fighter aircraft how many are operational, l dont know. How many attack helicopters do we have that are operational. How many heavy lift helicopters do we have to ensure supply chain logistics❓ Can the NAF respond to a minimum of 10 simultaneous different engagements with expedience at any one time. Within say 250 mile radius of Maiduguri within 20 minutes❓ Insurgents rarely attack directly French convoys WHY because of the response. Essentially Boko have light arms, gun trucks and the usual rpg7's. What do we have ❓ Do we have definitive IFV's❓ Because it seems we lack the capacity to overcome an ambush. Having soldiers with AK47's in large numbers doesn't give you clear cut advantage. Armoured vehicle multiple variants are needed like yesterday desperately 7 Likes |

komekn:NAF don't respond to most of the attack on FOBs and convoy Why because they're most times not aware Give NAF timely Info and they'll respond An Example is the Auno attack last year. The populance gave the military Timely info even before ISWAP struck. NAF prepared a well package Force of Alpha jet,L39ZA and Two gunships to counter two fronts. Or the Dapchi attack,Guy NAF do respond to CAS if called. Let's not compare the situation in Mali and Nigeria first of all The land mass in NE alone is huge and there are so many fronts coupled with our porous borders 4 Likes |

Odunayaw: This is not a competition of who know pass, l really dont what your argument is. The preferred gun truck or if you like the bench mark is the series 70 Toyota Land cruiser double cab pick-up, the current one is series 79. If you remember l said base model costs £50k. When you modify it to meet military standard there will additional costs. Finally, paying attention to detail is a sign of intelligence. When l talked about the approximate cost l said $60k convert £50k to $ and you get $62.5k at today's rate.Below a YouTube video of commissioning of the series 79 gun trucks in Abuja two months ago. https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=CnzO1GnpJ5k If you say it's not a BTR 60 then tell us what it is please. Please educate me. Below a picture of the more updated recommended BTR 80, with a 30 mm cannon. Far from perfect but much better than a soft skinned pick up gun truck. 1 Like

Toju200: Not aware !!! That's ludicrous and completely unacceptable where is the communication infrastructure. That means combatants and the airforce are operating blind. Is there no mobile network in that area, l am sure people will phone. Add to that where is our spatial situational awareness.❓ ❓ I want to presume you did Geography at school from your diction it was not that long ago. The Land mass of contention for which operation Barkhan has as it's area of contention. Covers Mali, Burkina and Niger. Now think again, about land mass, all borders in sub Sahara Africa are porous. Th land mass that the French operation covers is probably 15 times the size of the area of contention in the NE of Nigeria. In all honesty if there is an ambush and or fire fight between Boko and the NA. The proximity may be too close for any air strike without hitting friendly forces. I know our aircraft don't have precision munitions so you can't even laser paint a target for them to hit. If the NAF had invested in an effective number of UAV's at least that can do overwatch for 30 hours +. For instance the Wing Loong II UAV with its 12 ATGM's Then you would simply not have this problem as well as the deadly impact on our Gallant and very brave long suffering combatants. 7 Likes 1 Share |

komekn:if they call NAF for CAS they'll respond given u real life example. Yep u claim the French operation covers Mali, Burkina and Niger which is supposed to help yet weapons from Libya include Vehicle borne Explosives finds its way to BHT and ISWAP despite their reaper drones in Niger and Chad ISWAP wiped out nearly 100 chadian soilders in A 7hrs battle Not to talk of the attack on a Niger base earlier this year it's way NAF that responded. |

komekn:I agree I have missed the £ and $ signs. However, you're still talking about current versions. From the video I can't specifically say its the 79 series...not at all. Neither is there any "spectacular modification" by the Nigerian Army to make it "military". Don't feign ignorance on what my argument is, it's insulting. I don't need to educate you. SIPRI for example have the records of the BTR kinds we have. Lastly, I posted this last year fortunately in response to your post on BTRs. "Surplus units from the late 90's cost approximately $400,000, and relatively new units should cost no more than that. Some civilian BTR-80s (new as well) are sometimes sold for as little as $50,000." https://thesovietarmourblog..com/2014/11/btr-80.html Any piece of BTR that's battle worthy and would not end up not being a garage IFV/APC will not cost below $100k. Next time, don't come at me with insults. 1 Like |

Am talking about immediate use and MRAP with RWS we really need a handful of them. Buying this fairly used vehicles from Russia and America, that’s doesn't stop us from still patronizing Proforce has they do not produce RWS and other surveillance equipment. 1 Like
