Nope. At all. Maguire’s primary instinct, as a defender, should be to prevent Bergwijn from having a direct go at DDG. 100% of the time a defender should protect the attacker from having a go at the keeper.

It would’ve been better if he blocked access to DDG and allowed Bergwijn to go to the right and thereafter block his shot or cross. That’s how a defender should act in that instance- allowing him free access to the GK is definitely not the way to go.

I understand that DDG has let us down this season but that was a close range 1 on 1 situation. It was a shot and maybe DDG could’ve done better but the situation would’ve been avoided if Maguire hadn’t had a brain fart and moved out of the way for Bergwijn to score.

Honestly, the way Maguire disappeared made it look like there was no defender there at all.

DDG’s case has actually turned to one of, any shot against him scares the fans. The days of relying on the goalkeeper even when the defense is floored has gone.

That’s why Spurs started shooting anyhow.
