I just commenced a 4 months Software Engineering course at STUTERN Sha! I'll be learning JavaScript ( MERN STACK ) and my main aim is to either relocate to Europe with my skill or to work for a foreign Company while I stay in Nigeria and earn in foreign currency!!....it's more like a 4yr plan for me cos I still don't know how possible it will be for a Software Engineer ( after I graduate ) who is fresh out of training to get a foreign/relocation job

.
My Humble Tips:
First: I would recommend that you have an in demand skill(tech skill) or that you polish your skills very well. No foreign company will bother about you if you are a basics front end developer(there are tons to choose from). I would recommend that you learn up to being a full-stack web developer. If you have a foreign company in mind, you can go check out their job posting to get a clue of what skill they are requiring.
Second: Make as much website as possible to get the attention of these companies. In summary, build a very solid portfolio
Third: If you have a foreign country you would like to work in, please do check their in demand skills catalogue, you are going to find lots of in demand skills the country needs.
Fourth: (pls note that if it is possible, then do this, if not it's not mandatory)
I would recommend that you try learning sought after tech skills, like Artificial Intelligence, Mobile App Engineering, Software Engineer, DevOp, Full Stack Web Dev, Learning OOP languages(Python or C++).
.
The simply truth is, if you have sought after skills, then you can work at any company in any country. Please don't limit your self to thinking that you need to move to that country before you get work, It is highly possible that you work remotely with that company from Naija, earning in international currency.

Wao. So good to see folks having the same goal here. Over the course of my research I have came across some very good job openings that also offer visa assistance and relocation. infact some offer housing benefits too.

If you are looking forward to relocate abroad, the best option I think will be to get a job with a company abroad which offers relocation too. Here are some websites or job boards that publish regular jobs with relocation.

1. Stackoverflow Jobs Section
2. Github jobs section
3. Codepen.io jobs section
4. Indeed
5. Glassdoor.

A notable mention is an app called WeJappa. Google the app and download it, they post goods it/programming jobs and some offer relocation. Recently a back-end developer I know got a job via the app with relocation and housing in Rwanda.

Hands down, GitHub is the best website if you are looking for SERIOUS tech jobs. Just create repository or start contribution to the open source.

Spoiler Alert: Google and IBM are very big on GitHub and the open source, just contribute on one or two Google open source project(like chrome or tensor flow), your interviewing process go fast like Usain Bolt.

You guys have already said everything. Another thing I would like to add is people should form a habit of applying to jobs like fools. No apply two job or three you no hear anything you go just sit down say Job no dey. E no dey work like that. in a month, one has to apply to at least 500 jobs seriously. The more you apply the higher your chances of getting one.

As you are applying, also be building projects on the side, freelancing, contributing to open source, answering questions on stack overflow. All these things make you a much better developer and increases your chances of being noticed. Most people don't apply to anything. They won't study data structures and algorithms. If they call them for interview to come and write test they will run away.

You didn't mention the type of Job that interest you.

May I assume you are referring to IT jobs

Then the answer is YES. You can apply and get IT jobs both locally and internationally without having a bachelor in computer science. Its very possible.

Hi olioxx,

Thanks for this post. Although I have a background in Geophysics, I recently piqued interest in Artificial Intelligence. Could you please suggest a learning path I'd follow or resources I'd use to optimize my learning?

Thanks in anticipation of your kind response.

First let me appreciate that you already have an area you want to focus your effort on.
Second: Artificial Intelligence is broad with many branches(or nodes) like Machine Learning, Deep Learning, Computer Vision, Reinforcement Learning, Robotics(as a subset), Natural Language Processing and even Genetic Engineering etc.
Third: Regarding a learning path to follow, I might not be in the best position to outline that for you, as I am not specialized in Artificial Intelligence. But I would recommend that you read books on Machine Learning and Deep Learning (those that teaches Keras, TensorFlow, and ScikitLearn), also be very VERY good at Python 3 and SQL, then brush yourself up with learning R, MATLAB(optional).
Fourth: You must be good at Mathematics and Calculus(Probability, Linear and Matrix Analysis, Combinatorics). Please don't bog yourself with learning the whole of these mathematical stuff, just learn the ones that applies to Machine Learning(Deep Learning).
Fifth: If you can, pls enroll for a course on edX, edX is the best MOOC in my opinion.
.
** Pls note that Deep Learning is a subset of Machine Learning.
** The learning path to AI and its subsets is very steep, but it is not impossible to learn.
** Start with downloading Miniconder and Anaconder so you practice as you learn.
** Very important, watch YouTube video, enroll for a course on edX.
** Pls note that at first, the learning process will be crazy, but with your persistence and curiosity, you will survive.
** If it's possible, there is this IBM online AI course, I don't know much about it, but please do enroll for the course, see ehn, IBM happens to be one of the best US of A companies that is very good with AI. You've heard of IBM Watson. Please search online for that IBM program.
** Lastly, pls join online AI forums, where you can ask questions and also learn from the expert. If it is Facebook group join it, if it's WhatsApp group join it, If it's Telegram group join it.
------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------
I talk about edX course, pls note that to get certified, you have to pay(in US$). But there is a hack.
You either enroll for a self paced program, or a follow through course/program(per say). These depends on what edX or the affiliated University currently offer, which means there are some course that are self paced, or those that you follow through(for some months).
What I do is, I will take/enroll for the program and learn without getting certified as that will be free, you just need a Computer, Internet Connection and Good Battery.
But if you have the money, pls do get certified, as that will give your career a boost.
If there is anything I omit, I will try modify this comment. If there are any ML engineers on Nairaland, pls make una comment oooo.
Oh before I forget, on Google search bar, type in "Best Books for Machine Learning". If you find any O'Reilly or Packet Publication books, please do buy it or download it, those guys publish very standard book. My library is filled up with their books. They are good publishers, especially tech related books.

You're a great helper. I really appreciate your valuable input. You have a way of clarifying things and this has helped me to sort through the choices. As suggested, I have mapped out AI forums to join. I have also looked up related MOOCs to take.

Thanks for bringing the IBM AI online course to my notice and thanks again for being so willing to help me figure things out.

Pls gurus, I'm just a new entrant into the IT space. Attended courses in HTML, CSS and PYTHON. Been struggling with it and it seems the coding suites of IT may not be my thing. Someone now advised that I can veer into the non-coding path. He recommended Networking, cloud computing particularly Amazon web services (AWS). Pls, how lucrative is AWS and how fast can I work my way thru it. Any learning resource too will be appreciated.

Bro i can understand you, alot of people are like that when starting out. Don't go into tech only because of the money aspect, first, take your time to read about different area like software, App development , cloud or devops, data science et.c. so you can choose the one you feels you want to build a career from.
All area in tech is lucrative.Coding may not be your everyday thing in aws but believe me you will still write code in some situations like when you are building a ci/cd pipeline or writing iaac.
So take like a week to learn about different aspect and choose one, Then focus on the one you chooose.

Important notice to developers in the house looking for job placement abroad.

1. Have a very good portfolio.
Am not talking about just one kind portfolio with some projects like that. Have a very good one with mouth watering projects. Projects that can make potential employer go gaga. A good portfolio is the major determinant of you getting an interview in the first place.

2. Resume
Here is something valid every developer or programmer. A one page and simple resume that sum up all your details and info.

3. Mastery of Git and Github
This is a major requirement I found on most jobs placement. You must really know what git is and how to use it. If you finally get employed, no doubt you will be working with a team and the major collaboration platform will be Github. So guys, lesson in that.

4. Have Some Knowledge Outside Your Major Focus.
What I mean by this is that, have basic knowledge of other areas apart from your main focus. Take for instance, if you are a front end developer, a basic knowledge and idea of the back-end and how the web works won't be a bad idea.

5. LinkedIn
Most recruiters playground is LinkedIn so now tell me why you don't wanna be there as a job seeker. You will get exposed to jobs from different firms and how their recruitment process take.

6. Passport
Some of you guys don't have a passport and wanna travel out. Cmon, you will need a passport if you really wanna travel abroad. So guys, go get that passport.

That's all for now guys.
