Do Not Accept A Banking Job - I Refused To Listen by FellaG: 3:22pm On Jun 28, 2020 |
Hi all, moderator pls help me push to fp. I need good advise like badly. I joined the banking system about a decade ago. Young and naive. I got carried away by thier flashy suits and top tech phones. The moment I entered I realized all these was a scam. Those suits you see are being paid for, installmentally for 3months. The phones in 6 months etc Bankers are one of the least paid professions today considering the amount of time they put Into thier work (7am to even 10pm) and the level of risk they are subjected to. The sad thing about working for a Nigerian bank is once u leave, u realize that you can't use the skill elsewhere. You are technically back to square one. This is my case. I spent the last decade of my life working in a financial institution as a teller. Quite wastful considering the fact that I know nothing other than counting money for customers. I worked for 7days in a week. 10yrs passed In a flash. No time to even get additional qualifications. Before joining, my friends adviced me against it, but coming from a humble background the need to get independent fast was more appealing. Why I stayed so long is a topic for another day (have you heard of employment fraud) anyway, I left last week and I can say I am happy I finally got a chance and time to learn any new trending knowledge and I am prepared to start afresh. I will be 35 this year. With a background in construction mgt I thought of copywritting, digital marketing etc but I love to learn technical stuff.. Pls advise if any. I know IT related careers will sell here and abroad. I've thought of programming, cloud tech, data tech etc. Please I need your advice, which path should I follow now that at the age of 40 I will regain all the time I lost in the banking field. I can get an MSc but I want a high income paying skill that the likes of the oil majors wouldn't mind employing even at my age or if I am to be self employed I can be distinctive in that area. Niaralanders, pls help a brother 180 Likes 14 Shares

There is no one size fits all in the issues of charting a career path for one's self to secure the future. However, one thing is certain; the race is NOT to the swift, neither is the battle to the strong. It is of God that showeth mercy. Kira kita o d'ola. Hence, Beere l'owo ori 371 Likes 14 Shares |

Congratulations on being courageous to release yourself from the golden handcuff. You can take courses on Data Science, Artificial Intelligence, or Affiliate marketing. You can learn copywriting in order to write your own sales pages but don't invest in making a career from copywriting. I'd suggest you delve into the emerging tech fields in order to be strategically positioned in this 4th technological revolution. 163 Likes 10 Shares |

@Op, I can say banking job is not a total waste of time . It was a waste of time to you becox it was not your career path. Like a graduate of accounting, banking & finance etc can never be a waste of time & resources to them. It's good you realize it on time, I pray to God for total career recovery for you. No knowledge is wasted . Bros @40, time nor dey again If you have enough capital, just go into business or trade., At this time you wouldn't want to settle for a graduate trainee job in your own carrier job. 121 Likes 11 Shares |

I wholly agree that it was a total waste of time being a teller for 10 yrs! Im sure it was A contract position. Being a banker even as a full time staff isn't funny. As a full staff the money to easily pay bills is there, but you are constantly very busy, very stressed with high job uncertainty. - it's not an interesting life at all. If one will choose banking one must think of these and be confortable choosing of all that. @OP: There is nothing for you in the oil sector right now. the most viable self employing skills now are in IT- programming, graphics design, animation, social media content manager, data analytics. Then also photography, shoe making, fashion design, interior decoration, furniture making, poultry, fish production. Programming is really good if you can handle the thinking involved and also the time commitment it demands. But most important factor is viability where you are and your interest. Whatever it is you must be ready to learn well and produce quality work. 112 Likes 6 Shares |

I spent the last decade of my life working in a financial institution as a teller A teller is not a “banker”, tellers are most times contract staff, they don’t know anything more than posting/receiving cash, sorting cash or anything cash- something interns can do. So, it is only normal they feel extremely used after years of counting cash they may not own. Nobody is going to employ you after years just because you can count cash and identify fake notes on sight. There is nothing wrong in paying for goods in installments, firms amortize, let alone an individual . It is only bad when you buy something you don’t need, cannot afford and would benefit nothing tangible from, over its useful life. This is where lots of bankers get it wrong. I don’t see how they are among the least paid professions IN NIGERIA for the work they do. What do you want teachers, policemen and people in the medical sector to say? 91 Likes 7 Shares |

pocohantas:Thank you very much for your piece. I so much appreciate it. I have a business already. Infact I have two ongoing but I feel I need to have a high paying skill one which I can make a name with or get paid in dollars for, or one which I can consult for multinationals etc. I lost out on trends really, I will really appreciate if anyone can point me in that direction. Many thanks 39 Likes 2 Shares |

FellaG: Lol, when it is not that you want to turn Hushpupi. I believe consultancy is very broad and it is just a fancy name for people who put a price on their expertise and solutions. So, whichever niche you choose, you should know it and know it well. Maybe Pcguru1 can guide you in what IT field is most profitable. 12 Likes |

Bia OP, which bank in Nigeria is making you work 7-10pm everyday of the week? Good you are now following your passion. Is it that you spent 10years as a TELLER without promotion or reassignment to other units in the bank? One mistake I think you did was not going for professional course, even if you don't use it while in active service of the bank, you will definitely need it elsewhere. About the phone and suit, it is just funny mhen.. 14 Likes 1 Share |

I always found the term 'banker' quite broad and I only really hear it being used that way Nigeria. Is a 'banker' essentially a customer service/sales assistant that happens to work in a bank? Because I believe there are a variety of role types in the banking industry 15 Likes |

pocohantas: IT is a good field however it requires a strong sacrifice and dedication in the face of what looks like hopelessness and all. But if you have a business that solves a problem and is working, I will say look into IT to expand your business, what you might just need are more customers and bringing your services to people's door. It's important to also follow the trends else you might have what to takes but taking the wrong approach. God will bless you and give more direction , take care hope this helps 24 Likes 2 Shares |
