CHAPTER FIFTEEN


It was middle of the day, Daniel had just left the hospital canteen where he had gone to have lunch. He didn't have lunch often but on that particular day, he had been dragged by Lina to the canteen. His ringing phone brought him back to mother earth, he shook his head sideways after he saw who was calling, it was his mother and she had been calling since the previous day. He shoved his phone back into his pocket and continued walking, it started ringing again, he let out a long and full breathe before picking up.


"Hello, Mom, good day Ma" he muttered huskily.


"Good day, Daniel, how are you doing?"


"Am fine, Mommy, how is everyone at home?" Daniel asked.


"Everyone is just your brother and i, we are fine anyways" she replied.


"That's good to hear" Daniel sighed.


"When will you be back home?" the woman asked swiftly.


"Mom, i don't know yet. There is much work to do here at the hospital, my services are still needed" he sighed again.


"Daniel, you focus on saving people's lives that you have forgotten to save your own, your life is important too" she spoke icily.


"I know, Mom, don't worry, i will be fine, i can't just pause everything here and come back home. People need me" he smiled at a nurse that passed by.


"Daniel, thank God you are a doctor and you know the implications of what you are doing, dragging everything and making it linger till now. Am worried about you son"


"Am fine, Mom. Don't worry, i will be back home soon and my regards to my brother" he smiled and ended the call.







Bari hummed happily as she worked in her shop that day. She often smiled at her girls when she spoke to them or when giving out instructions. She had received a text from Daniel earlier in the morning, and it made her feel like a teenager in love. Someone entered her shop, she looked up and stared daggers at the person.


"Will you ever listen? what part of "leave me alone" don't you understand?" she barked, turned and stared at the girls, they were all busy with their work, she sighed. It was a good thing she had taught them not to interfere whenever she talked or even quarrelled with a customer.


"Is this how you talk to your baby daddy? I deserve a little respect, you know?" Rowland scoffed sitting down. Bari gasped and stared at the girls, again. even though they had their gazes fixed on their work, she knew they heard what Rowland had said.


"Ola, you girls can go on break now, it is past 12 already, you can stroll to the end of the road and then come back or do anything you want, just go out on a break" she smiled at them.


"Okay Ma, thank you Ma" the girls scampered out of the shop happily.


"What do you want, Rowland?" she relaxed fully on her chair.


"Bari, i want you. You and my child. We will just get married and move somewhere else and start up as a family"


"How intriguing. Have you forgotten? the day i told you i was pregnant, you said i should take it out. You said you didn't need any baggage or any burden in your life. I begged you, I pleaded with you to just give my baby the father title but you vehemently insisted on abortion. So are you ready to have baggages in your life now?" she asked, calmly.


"You don't need to blame me, Bari. I was just 26 then, I wasn't ready to be a father, i didn't even have a stable job then, adding a baby to it would have been burdensome to me" he rolled his eyes.


"Rowland, am going to say this for the last time. Stay away from me and my child, that is if you ever see her though, because she is not with me"


"Where is she?" he asked.


"I don't see how that is any of your business, leave my shop this minute and don't force me to get a restraining order against you" she warned. Rowland stood up and staggered out of the shop.

CHAPTER SIXTEEN

TWO WEEKS AFTER

Daniel stood in front of the woman laying on the delivery mat with her legs spread open, they were in the labour room and the woman had been twisting her face in pain since they arrived.


"Doctor, please, i want to push now" the woman screamed.

"Not yet, ma'am, the cervix is not completely open" he replied, calmly. There were 3 nurses in the delivery room with him.


"I can't feel my legs" the woman shrieked, biting her lip in pain.


"You need to save your strength, ma'am, you will need it when it's time to push" Daniel smiled.


"If this baby comes out, i won't have another one" the woman cried. The nurses Chuckled, that had always been the line used by those women in labour and after two years? they would still come back for another delivery.


"Okay, the cervix is completely open, you can now push" Daniel said bending towards the woman's spread legs. She pushed, the nurses surrounded her urging her to continue pushing.


"Am tired ooo, i can't push again" she cried.


"No ma'am, you can do this, don't give up. Now push with all your strength" Daniel smiled up at her. She pushed with all her might and the baby's head came out. Daniel suctioned AMNIOTIC FLUID, BLOOD and MUCUS from it's nose and mouth.


"You need to push more to deliver the baby's shoulder and body" Daniel said holding the baby's head. She gave a final push and baby came out fully. Daniel clamped and cut the umblical cord, he handed the baby to one of the nurses who instantly went to clean it up.


"It's a boy" Daniel smiled at the woman "But you need to give the final push so that the placenta can come out as well" he added immediatly.


"Okay" the woman groaned and pushed again, the placenta popped out, Daniel took it and gave it to another nurse, she would tie it up for the woman to take home with her.


"Congrats Ma'am, you did it" He smiled at the woman who smiled weakly at him too.


"Can i see my baby?" she muttered, weakly.


"You will, nurse amaka is cleaning him up" he replied, the smile still on his face.


"Nurse Edna, you will have to clean her up then have her moved back to the ward, then the baby joins her too" He told the third nurse who nodded in affirmative.


Daniel left the delivery room after congratulating the woman for the umpteenth time. He passed through the registry and got to the waiting room, a young man ran up to him, nervously.


"Doctor, how is my wife?" the young man asked, even though the AC in the reception provided enough ventilation, the young man was still sweating.


"Congrats, your wife just put to bed a bouncing baby boy. Mother and son are doing okay and you will see them soon once they are transferred to the ward" Daniel smiled.


"Thank you, doctor" he smiled, jumping up in the air.


Daniel left the reception and walked back to his office, he sat on the armrest chair and yawned tiredly, then his phone beeped, he picked it up and an envelope was at the top of his phone indicating a new message entry, he clicked on the message box, the eighth words he saw made his heart leap for Joy.


"Yes, i Have Agreed To Be Yours, Forever" he read it again before dialing her number, she picked at the fourth ring.


"Mi amor" he muttered softly immediately she answered.


"Hello doctor, I guess you got my message" she asked.


"Yes, i did, you don't know how happy i am right now" he giggled.


"When am i going to see you, again?" she muttered, almost in a whisper.


"Why? do you miss me like i miss you badly?" he chuckled briefly.


"Yes, i miss you"


"You don't know how much in love i am with you, i just love you and i don't even know how to rate it" he sighed.


"I love you too, doctor" she replied.


"You are making me feel that you don't know my name with this your doctor thingy" he let out a throaty laugh.


"of course i know your name" she laughed.


"Say my name, baby" he grinned.


"Daniel" she muttered.


"I love the way you call my name, Bari. You are driving me crazy"


'I don't know" she laughed.


"Can you come over to the house, later in the evening?"


" No problem, you will text me the address then"


"Yes, i will. Take care of you for me, i will see you later in the evening" he smiled.


"Alright doc" she replied and ended the call.
