Governor reaches out to locals and diaspora to feed starving families grin

Kiambu governor of Dr. James Nyoro has called on more well-wishers to donate towards those who have been adversely affected after losing their livelihoods to Covid -19.

He urged them to donate either food or items that could be used to contain the infections either in homes or in institutions that have been earmarked for isolation.

Dr. Nyoro revealed that a committee was liaising with people living in the diaspora so that they too could come on board and participate in ‘adoption’ of villages so as to cushion those who were affected by the pandemic

The governor made these remarks Thursday at his office when he received donations from at least 15 companies operating in Kiambu County amounting to Sh6.5 million.

Dr. Nyoro noted that since the pandemic hit Kenya in March this year, it had affected many families and called on those who could afford to donate towards cushioning them from starvation.

He noted that the Kiambu County Covid-19 Response committee was doing a splendid job of mobilizing resources and relief which would go a long way to alleviate the suffering of the people.

The Governor explained that his committee had come up with a temporary solution through which food worth Sh2, 500 could take a family of four for a whole month.

“The logistics sub-committee has done their mathematics and come up with that figure and I call upon one person to adopt a village and volunteer to feed like 10 families which would amount to Sh25, 000 or any amount that they could afford.

He said if they could do so and continue until the infections were contained, they would have adopted those families through an organised way thus helping to show kindness through the resources that God had blessed them with,” said Governor Nyoro.

The governor told the meeting that owing to the proximity of Kiambu to Nairobi, cases of Covid were going up very fast and more so following the opening the economy by the President on Monday.

“More people are going for the compliance certificate so that they may resume their businesses and this has resulted into the numbers of new infections going up,” he noted.

The Governor also attributed the increase in infected cases to the presence of multinationals operating in Kiambu saying they should be tested as they resumed engaging in business.

He said Tigoni, which has been designated as the Kiambu Covid-19 centre, has a bed capacity of 226 with 28 patients so far while the level 5 hospitals of Kiambu, Gatundu and Thika had a capacity of 102 beds.

He said the County has capacity for isolation of 500 beds and called on people to adhere to the health protocols to avoid contracting the virus which was expensive to treat.

Wangige hospital with a bed capacity of 100 beds has also been reserved for Covid 19 patients, making the county compliant to the 300 bed capacity for Covid-19 patients.

Among the special donations that the governor received were 5 ICU beds already installed at the Tigoni hospital from Tilisi Construction Company and 5 spraying pumps to be used for fumigation which were donated by Hardi Kenya, a company situated in Tatu city, Ruiru.

More Kenyans are still starving, Hunger report shows grin

By Jael Mboga | March 13th 2020 at 01:38:25 GMT +0300

A Global Hunger Index report shows Kenya's food security is worsening.
grin grin grin grin

The 2019 GHI report states that government efforts to ensure nutrition and food security by 2022 have not been enough.

Kenya was ranked 86 out of the 117 countries reviewed. grin

However, in 2018, the study showed the country still has “serious levels of hunger” with a ranking of 77 out of 119 countries.
The revelation coincided with the revelation by then Agriculture CS Mwangi Kiunjuri who disclosed that over Sh8 billion worth of maize may have gone bad in the National Cereals and Produce Board stores.

The revelation was a smack on the face of the Jubilee Government that put up measures to promote food security.

Food security is part of President Uhuru Kenyatta’s Big Four agenda which includes affordable housing, universal healthcare and manufacturing.

The report indicates that for every three Kenyans, one is grappling with severe food insecurity and poor nutrition.

Kenya: Woman boils stones thinking her child would sleep waiting for food grin

Tired of her children crying out of hunger, a mother in Kenya boiled stones in utensils to reassure them that she was cooking food for them. The heartbreaking incident happened in Mombasa where Peninah Bahati Kitsao put water along with a few stones thinking that her children would sleep while waiting for the food. Spilling details of the tragedy, Kitsao reportedly said that it was only her youngest born who was crying and that her elder children had understood when she told them they had food no food.

According to international media reports, Kitsao is an illiterate widow, who worked as a washerwoman. However, as coronavirus pandemic intensified, people started observing social distancing and her job became redundant. Later, her neighbour Prisca Momanvi, who saw the tragic scene of poverty, informed the media and also opened a bank account for her. As the story spread, more and more people came forward to help and she started receiving money.

Kitsao, who lives in a two-bedroom house without any electricity or water while speaking to international media reports, said that receiving help from fellow Kenyans was nothing less a "miracle". She added that she couldn’t believe that people could be so “loving.” She also revealed that since the incident, she had been receiving phone calls from across the nation from people who are asking how to help.

Kenyan Bishops Ask God to Help Fight Corruption grin grin grin grin grin grin grin grin grin

Kenyan Catholic bishops are seeking divine intervention in the battle against corruption, urging citizens to turn to God with a specially crafted anti-graft prayer. grin

Kenyan BishopsKenyan Bishops pray barefoot against corruption. (Photo: The Kenya Conference of Catholic Bishops (KCCB))“Father in heaven, You always provide for all your creatures, so that they may live as You have always willed. You have blessed our country Kenya with rich human and natural resources to be used in honour and glory and for the well being of every Kenyan,” the prayer, released on Thursday starts.

“We are deeply sorrowful for the wrong use of these your gifts and blessings through the act of corruption, as a result of which many of our people are hungry, sick, homeless and displaced, ignorant and defenceless. Father, You alone can heal us of this sickness which leads to death,” the prayer continues.

The move is part of a six-months-long campaign the bishops launched in October, aimed at ending corruption in the African country, Vatican News reported.

The outlet added that Kenya’s economy is barely surviving the widespread practice of bribery, massive theft of public funds, ineffective judiciary resulting in diminished incomes in ordinary households and small businesses, unemployment, and distrust of potential foreign investors.

According to Transparency International’s Corruption Perception Index, Kenya ranks 144th on a list of 180 countries - with number 1 being perceived as the least corrupt.

Symbolically kneeling and praying barefoot before an altar, each holding a cross in a hand, the bishops each read and signed the commitment “to work tirelessly to fight the evil of corruption in Kenya,” the Kenya Conference of Catholic Bishops (KCCB) said in a statement marking the beginning of the anti-graft campaign.

“We humbly beg You, touch our lives and those of our leaders so that we may realise the evil of corruption and work hard to eliminate it. For any citizen who has acquired anything through corrupt means, Lord, give him or her, the spirit of courage to make a restitution and come back to You,” the prayer they wrote begged.

As part of their campaign, the bishops, according to the CatholicUniverse, also banned all donations by politicians, declaring that the churches across the country will be receiving donations only electronically or via cheques.

“Our churches will not be used as political platforms or for any other motive other than for the worship of God,” the KCCB said.

“Raise up for us God-fearing citizens and leaders who care for us and who will lead us in the path of peace, justice, prosperity, progress and above all, Love.

The recently released 2019 Global Hunger Index shows that millions of Kenyans are going hungry and that the country suffers from serious levels of hunger. Eunice Njogu shares her insights into the causes, and what can be done.

How serious is the problem of hunger in Kenya?

Kenya has a population of 46 million people. According to the Kenya Institute for Public Policy Research Analysis, 14.5 million of these Kenyans face food insecurity and poor nutrition each year. When looking at extreme cases, last year 2.6 million Kenyans were said to be in a food insecurity “crisis”.

“Food insecurity” is when people lack enough money, or resources, to ensure they can eat. Hunger – which can be a short-term physical discomfort or a life-threatening situation – is a possible outcome of food insecurity.

Last year Kenya was ranked 86th out of 117 qualifying countries on the 2019 Global Hunger Index. This classifies the country’s situation as “serious”.

According to the World Food Programme, the people who are most vulnerable to food scarcity in Kenya live in dry areas, which cover about 80% of the country. Food insecure families typically live in rural areas, are poor and depend on farming for income.

Children are the demographic group most vulnerable to hunger. This is because their growing bodies are more vulnerable to other problems hunger causes; for instance about 29% of children in rural areas and 20% of those living in cities have stunted growth, a sign of significant vitamin and mineral deficiencies.

chai, what is survival sex? grin grin grin poor, hungry and desperate, foolish kenyans will do anything, including survival sex grin grin grin grin grin grin

Food Insecurity, Poverty Force Kenyan Girls Into 'Survival Sex' grin
By Salem Solomon

WASHINGTON - Women and girls as young as 12 from Kenya's countryside are being forced into sex work to support families affected by prolonged drought. They have little or no education and travel at least 50 kilometers (30 miles) to reach urban areas, working in unsafe conditions far from their homes.

“Since I was raped, I entered into prostitution, because I saw that is something that my family depends on,” a 24-year-old mother told the International Rescue Committee (IRC). “It is not something good, but the need to care for these children is what forces me, because I don't have anywhere else to run to,” the woman said.

The IRC has been working in Turkana, a region in northwestern Kenya with over 276,000 people in need of food assistance. Turkana, which borders both Uganda and South Sudan, also suffers from Kenya's second-highest HIV infection rate, according to Mercy Lwambi, the women's protection and empowerment manager for IRC.

The impact of drought on rural communities such as those in Turkana's countryside can be particularly harsh. In addition to soaring food prices, rural families face decimated livestock and diminished crops. With grim prospects for survival and a dire need for money, young girls find themselves in early marriages, child labor and forced prostitution.

Rampant abuse

As crippling drought lingers, survival sex, in particular, has proliferated. Child sex workers in Turkana make, on average, about 50 shillings, or less than 50 cents, per client. But it's not uncommon for no payment to be made or for money to be stolen from the girls.

“Most of the time, their clients steal the little money they give them. So, their clients pay them for the work, then beat them up or take the money, or their clients intoxicate them with alcohol and have sex without pay,” Lwambi said.

Without a support system, girls trapped in sex work face the constant risk of beatings, psychological abuse and sexually transmitted diseases, particularly HIV.

In addition to prostitution, the IRC has also documented an uptick in gender-based violence and the rape of children, underscoring how humanitarian crises disproportionately affect girls.
