bettermike: For someone who wants to be so obnoxious, you talk too much online . Your posting history is littered with your personal details. Your vices (eww), your multiple usernames, your real name (yep), your school, your phone number, your medical and marital issues (implied) etc. Just 5 minutes in your history have revealed your abject state (as well as your occasional attempts to rise above it; I give you that). My advice to you is what I said first time: stay in your lane buster! I had no business with you; as I rightly surmised, you are not the kind I want to have any business with. I didn't mention you. You rudely mentioned me. Stay out of my business and mind your life. |

proffemi: Na wa o. You should put a sign post on your posts asking people not to mention you. Shior. Oh, lol, you know where I work. You know where I live. You be solid man o. Funny dude. I have nothing to hide but you know nothing. Look, I have no business with people like you. But if you put something wrong out there, it is our business to rectify it. |

proffemi: Another point of mine which you didn't grasp is that NCDC data, which you mentioned, has continued to increase in Nigeria even though schools are closed. Whether schools are opened now or not, the data will continue to increase. Your opinion that our students don't obey the rules is reflective of the general society. How many of us (adults) obey COVID19 prevention guidelines? Our children are simply copying us, but it's not too late to begin to correct them, especially by our own behavioral examples. Now that schools are closed, how many of us (parents/guardians) ensure that the same children stay at home without going out to visit and play with friends? It seems we suddenly begin to over-emphasize the dangers of contracting the virus immediately schools are mentioned. The same students visit markets everyday and we all know the situation in our markets. Mind you, the virus originated from a market in Wuhan, Hubei province in China, NOT from a school. So the continued increase in confirmed cases in both Nigeria (where schools are still closed) and in Israel (where schools reopened) can not be blamed on schools alone. I put it on the general behavior of the populace. Leaving sentiments out it, let us not continue to punish our schools for what is non of their fault. Even WHO has analysed the situation and came out with a statement that COVID19 may never go away. It is up to us to devise safe ways of living with it. That is why God gave us brains. Assuming the virus stays for the next five years, I am sure you won't keep a WAEC candidate at home for that long waiting for when the virus will go away. The earlier we start thinking, the better it will be for all of us. |

uchrikk:According to you, disease incidence is increasing, but yet we should open schools so it can increase more? How can you defend that? Is it that you think COVID doesn't kill, or that if it takes only a certain number of lives, reopening would be worth it? Assuming the virus stays for the next five years, I am sure you won't keep a WAEC candidate at home for that long waiting for when the virus will go away...No, we will not stay home for five years. But we do need reasonable guidelines or assurances that we are not putting lives at risk. I will leave you with some of the guidelines. Tell me that most secondary schools (which are criminally underfunded in the first place) in Nigeria will do #3 to #6. 1. Equip and resource schools for improved teaching and learning methods for special needs learners. 2. Provide WASH facilities including soap, hand sanitizers, and girls’ dignity kits in schools 3. Establish and adequately equip dispensaries and clinics as appropriate 4. Create adequate classrooms and learning spaces to maintain safe distancing in schools 5. Provide better ventilated classrooms and TLCs 6. Use solar power and alternative energy sources for electricity, and boreholes for water (which human being put this here?) I repeat, we can reopen anytime, but the evidence suggests that we haven't yet reached a point where it is safe to do so. That is what the Fed Ministry of Education is saying, and for once, they got it right. Forget the pressure from private school proprietors and their teachers, like a certain clown above. When there is evidence that we can safely do so, we should reopen schools. That may be next 2 weeks, it may be next month. Before then, we shouldn't play games with lives. |

Re: WASSCE: South-West States To Reopen Schools by proffemi: 12:37pm On Jul 16, 2020 |
uchrikk: I'm sure you know that the risk of COVID infection is much higher in enclosed indoor spaces (like....classrooms, or in my case, hot, steamy lecture rooms) than outdoors, right? If you didn't, well that is the rationale for leaving markets open to some extent while enclosed spaces are no-no for now. As per your other other post: government may not meet the guidelines in many years, but there are many moving parts. The COVID situation right now requires strict adherence to the guidelines (your yourself said cases are rising), which is not possible. Over time (weeks? months? lets depend on data) the situation may become less dangerous. Incidence may fall. Mortality may flatline. More efficacious medications may emerge. Then, failure to follow guidelines would not be so costly. Once again, all I am saying is: follow the evidence and data. That is what FG is doing on this. It is the right thing. |

Pacesetter123: Am only going to answer you just this once. Do you know there are kids that are asthmatic and sickle cell patients, tell me how do you plan on protecting such kids knowing fully well how deadly the virus is? If you don’t have a clear cut answer to this, then you might as well stop clamoring for the exam to hold at least not yet. Just so you know, waec are already planning to reschedule the exam, you can read that up at your leisure time. |

jaxxy:Dey av given de so called ministry of education u mentioned a window to negotiate with WAEC for a shift in date of the exams generally. But in a situation wer de ministry fails to do so,those people will be left with no oda options than to sit their children for the exams.Which I wholeheartedly agree with them.It will be so shameful seeing Ghana, Liberia, Gambia, etc writing dis year's WAEC while Nigerian candidates are locked in at home for nothing. |
Re: WASSCE: South-West States To Reopen Schools by Pacesetter123(m): 2:34pm On Jul 16, 2020 |
schumastic:Students with perculiar health challenges like dat have always been managed by various schools b4 de advent of corona.Every school will device a preventative means to safeguard de lives of students, teachers and de examiners.Every school authorities are fully aware of de situation on ground and they know wot to do.It seems to me dat it's only de federal ministry of education dat doesn't know wot to do at all.If the Fed ministry of education knew dat de don't av de capacity to conduct the exams dis year, wudnt it had bin more mature to go into negotiation with WAEC to postpone the exams? Instead of just coming out to tell the whole world dat Nigeria candidates will not write de exam, dat WAEC can continue with the exam in other countries.Wot a childish pronouncement? Are they the ones dat will pay for the exams for those children next year?Dis are some of the issues government should have addressed, not just exams has been cancelled. So my stance still remain dat if de ministry of education cannot come up with a guidelines to write dis exams nor enter into negotiation with WAEC for the postponement. They should find a place n sit down and allow any region or state dat is ready to write their exams. |

proffemi: Those facilities you want provided for all schools in Nigeria may not materialize in the next 5 yrs. We all know our country na. So should schools shut down till then? Do you know how many teachers and private school owners have died because they cannot afford drugs? Do you know the economy is drowning fast and school economy is not little? Do you know how kids have been raped, molested, and abused because parents need to go hustle for food? Ironically those parents exposed to Covid-19 would still come home and infect these children you so want to be locked up. On the economy again, do you know how many people who don't go to work (and so not economically productive) just because they want to stay at home with the kids? Finally, Oyo State has opened schools partially. We have not heard of multiple deaths of teachers and students. 'We should wait longer for the deaths', you may say. But I assure you if (indeed) deaths increase in Oyo State, it is only taking its share of death toll early. Every state would eventually open up and then take their own share. |

hero2000:I have already answered this question please. You can where I explained to the other guy how the many moving parts mean that adherence to guidelines may become less critical in just a few months. Do you know how many teachers and private school owners have died because they cannot afford drugs?...You are conflating two different things. If your concern is the welfare of private schools teachers, there are ways of doing it that don't have to fly in the face of data. There are reports that the FG is already working on this. You can take care of private school teachers without reopening, if it is not safe to do so. Finally, Oyo State has opened schools partially. We have not heard of multiple deaths of teachers and students. 'We should wait longer for the deaths', you may say ..I wouldn't put it that way, but your anticipation of my response shows that deep inside, you know what I am saying to be true: we need data. More data is never a bad thing. It is too early to see the effect of reopening on Oyo's cases. Please refer to Israel: they reopened schools in May, but only now are national figures being significantly affected. I do not understand why you guys cannot accept this simple fact: it is better to base decisions that affect many people (certainly ones that are literally matters of life and death) on facts and evidence. We do not have enough of either yet to be sure that reopening will be safe. |

This is a good one. Has they plan to reopen schools and prepare for the final examination. I hope all necessary health protocols are observed to prevent the spread of the virus also. Many things would change once they resume and can’t be the normal way institutions are. Hopefully parents can take advantage of the The Education Investment Plan which is a convenient and secure way to save for a child’s university education in the USA, UK, South Africa, Ghana and Nigeria. They plan for the next step and we now how covid-19 pandemic affected the economy. We need to plan for the future https://www.fcmb.com/education-investment

Re: WASSCE: South-West States To Reopen Schools by Nobody: 11:32am On Jul 17, 2020 |
proffemi: Sorry but I don't get the bold. There was a reason for the lockdown in the first place and the campaign to stay at home. In China, people were actually locked in their own homes by their government. I ask again, is the virus airborne? That's the only way you can justify that statement. Other than that, it's all in your imagination. It's not safer anywhere unless the safety precautions are taken seriously. It's easier to seat orderly in a classroom some metres apart from one another than setting a perimeter in the market place where everyone is screaming at anyone and all safety precautions are entirely jettisoned including the use of facemasks which many now use as chin-masks. While I'm not even in support of school resumption because I don't even plan to return to work soon, logic should prevail on this matter and not some cork and bull. May I remind you that an average of 240 people die of cancer daily in Nigeria and 80,000 yearly. This is not a pandemic and is not getting necessary attention from the government but a virus that takes about 10 people daily on the average is taken like it would end the world tommorow because the western world is treating it as same. It just doesn't make sense at all. More people die of malnutrition, HBP, Lassar, etc but we panic because the west panics. What a shame. The numbers you see daily are largely under-reported. People in their millions are living with the virus already and don't even know. Well, good luck to the government and I hope they don't open up soon but keep paying me. 1 Like |

ThreeBlackBird: The cork and bull made perfect sense to me. lol. Some people just come here to argue for the sake of arguing. The guy you quoted was up and about yesterday, yelling and yelling. If only some people know how many millions of people will die if schools don't resume soonest. It is easier to sit in your house compelling people not to go out when you have a means of income. At least, empathise for those who don't. The government that knows better has decided better. Nice one my brother. Thumbs up. |
Re: WASSCE: South-West States To Reopen Schools by proffemi: 4:13pm On Jul 17, 2020 |
ThreeBlackBird:The bold is self-explanatory. My stance is also clear: base decisions on facts. There are many responses I could make, including correcting some misconceptions, but ultimately, I am just fed up of this topic. If you believe it is wrong to base important decisions/policies on evidence/facts, then lets just agree to disagree. |
Re: WASSCE: South-West States To Reopen Schools by Nobody: 4:30pm On Jul 17, 2020 |
proffemi: The point is you don't have a source to back up your claim that the virus spreads more in an "enclosed indoor space" as you chose to call it, which are actually ventilated anyways. New researches have even proven that asymptomatic patients cannot transmit the virus. So if that was the premise on which your entire conclusion is based, then you're wrong. To be clear, the government is only worried that school children wouldn't take preventive measures seriously and not because the classrooms are enclosed and I stated earlier why the government shouldn't lose sleep about that. Too many people died in Nigerian daily for comfort but the government doesn't blink an eyelid, why is an average of 10 people now causing them sleepless nights? I understand you're fed up with the topic but I thought I should let you know this. 1 Like |
