Historian Charles Leslie wrote about the city's residents in his history of Jamaica. He wrote: "Wine and women drained their wealth to such a degree that some of them became reduced to beggary.

"They have been known to spend 2 or 3,000 pieces of eight in one night and one gave a strumpet 500 to see her naked."

You know I really don't get you Christians again. I mean why worship a God that orders genocide and claims he is righteous . And in ancient wars when millions died in one day,how is today not a major difference. If only we all shared one consciousness we would have conquered a little portion of space, but no it is god god god. What ever happened to the gods of your African fathers abi they were not god enough.

Au contraire sir, Africans rather failed themselves because of selfishness and greed. Remember, Europeans colonised, Brazil, Hong kong, Thailand, Canada, Australia, New Zealand, Malta and the USA too.
Yes sir, And it hurts. Why we still can't break free is puzzling. We just seem to go in circles.

It is your own comment that is dumb. What is dumb in saying ""God has a way of sorting out wickedness''? Perhaps, you do not also believe the stories in the bible and certainly refute the account of Sodom and Gomorrah. Do your research online to see if this story is correlated by recent scientific and archaeological findings or not. If you believe the story, then you should believe God punished the people because of their debauchery and nefariousness. And if you do not believe the biblical story, then you do not believe all the stories in the Bible. Then your beliefs need to be re-evaluated. The events narrated in the Port Royal story relate to this same wickedness and it is not hard to see the hand of God in the earthquake and Tsunami that destroyed the place and people. Perhaps, you think this is a natural event that has nothing to do with God. Truly, no one knows how God does His works but one thing I know is God would never have permitted this occurrence if He wanted Port Royal preserved wholly till this day! I know that the working of the whole universe and all that happens therein are under the command of the Almighty God. Nothing happens without His knowing! Perhaps, you do not even believe in the existence of God as an atheist or doubt this as an agnostic. Whatever your case is, you need to have a rethink and I pray you find God.

Unless I missed it, the article failed to point out one thing: Port Royal was actually built by the Spaniards, who were the ones in control of Jamaica before the British came and threw them out in the 17th century.

Once the British had taken over Port Royal and other parts of Jamaica from the Spaniards, they pretty much transfered Port Royal to the pirates so that the pirates could be well placed to protect the place from the Spaniards and whilst at it the pirates took to harassing gold and silver-ladened Spanish commercial ships that often plied that route in those years.

Many of the pirates became really rich from the business of robbing Spanish commercial shipping, hence their reckless spending and lifestyle.

Some of those pirates would later go on to hold prominent positions in the Jamaican colonial government. One example was Henry Morgan(mentioned in the article) who later became Lieutenant Governor of Jamaica.

thanks very much... You added flesh to it

No you missed it. Possibly Sodom and Gomorrah part 4. You have Plato's account of 'Lost City of Atlantis' as part 2, Pompeii in Italy as part 3 and this as part 4.
Discount God, reap this kind of damnation.
