Is only in Yoruba family that you will see that father and his children share different religion and still live in peace and harmony. I think the high level of education of the yorubas and cultural value is at play here.

It's simply due to high levels exposure to people from other faiths.
In certain areas of Yorubaland that are most homogeneous, like some places in ondo state, they could be as bigoted as their igbo counterparts.

Oga, we're not bigoted in Ondo state.
In my secondary school.

3 people represents us in Bible quiz.
2 Christians and 1 Muslim.

So stop saying that, I went to Catholic school, we have many Muslims reading Bible, going to church etc.

I am a Muslim. I went to Catholic schools, and today, I am married to a Christian. She goes to Church with the kids, while I go to the Mosque. I grew up in Yaba in an extended family house with uncles, aunties, cousins and other relations who are RCCG, CCC, CAC,Deeper Life, e.t.c.

Sometimes when aunty Bose is going to her CCC, I follow her, when uncle Segun is going to Deeper Life, I follow him. I did my first Baptism in Primary 4 at St Dominic's Church. When MFM started reigning in the early 90s, I was following uncle Musibau to MFM and I got baptized again in 1994. When I wanted to get married to my wife at Winners Chapel, I was baptized again after all, you cannot have too much of Jesus in your life.

The best periods of the year for me are weeks to the Children Harvest in CCC and C & S because one of my father's uncle was the Shepherd in charge of the C & S and one of my aunt Iya Bola was Mother-in-Israel in the C & S church, the cooking for the two churches will be done in out compound though in different months towards the end of the year. Plenty to eat and drink.

The Egungun festival is the most interesting part of the year. We will follow Egungun from Ebute-Meta to Bariga and follow them back late in the evening. Before the Egungun leave their abode, the will make roasted yam outside their compound and everyone will eat including the Muslims and Christians in the area.

One day, I was in the Mosque praying, I heard the drums of Egungun drummer boys, I quickly rushed my prayers, jumped out of the Mosque and followed the Egungun crew that included up to 2,000 people. We all got to Bariga where the Egunguns entered their other cult room for some minutes and when the came out, we continued our singing, dancing and running back to Ebute-Metta.

When we got to around Moore road, it was some minutes after 6PM, so I, Emmanuel, Adiku, Thomas, Tudefa, Mustapha and few others stopped at the St Dominic's Church for evening Mass, so we couldn't follow the Egungun to Ebute-Metta in that participated day.

Muslims Ileya festivals (ram festivals) are another very interesting periods. When my family slaughters one cow and some rams. My Christian relations are the people that will help prepare the cow and ram for distribution to friends and for eating. One of my uncles who is a hiphop Muslim will buy beers and alcoholic wines for us to enjoy the meat. Several weeks after the ileya festivals, my grandfather will still be quarrelling with him for bringing alcohol into the festival because some friends and relatives will get drunk and sleep everywhere in the compound till the next day.

My youth years were very interesting in term of religions. For you religious fanatics, you don't know what you are missing but, Thunder will still Fire ya father.

Under normal circumstances, there will be such but it's minimal, hence this famous proverb in Yoruba land - Iwalesin (meaning behavior is religion, if I get the translation well).

I'm a Christian, some years back I worked in a farm, I'm a night staff, we don't have anywhere to sleep at night, except inside mosque.
Will I say because I'm a Christian, I won't sleep in a mosque? what will happen to me?

Like I said there will be such in everywhere but it's just minimal, check the guy family, there will be Christians in his family, will he pick up arms against his family?

reason why religion can never divide Yorubas.
Even the kings don't have religion, they go to mosque, church and attend traditional festivals.

God bless your reasoning faculty ,u just said it without bias. EOD

Yes we are tolerance but not totally.

Our muslim brothers hate we Yoruba christians, they will side northern muslims against us anytime and any day.

If not that we Yoruba christians are always trying to maintain peace, there would be war between us and them every day.

If i tell you what i went true in the hand of a muslim family, all because am a christian.

Anyway they can now marry their own daughter.

Are you a Christian or just a church goer? If anyone meets a Christian, whether you are a Muslim, Sango Worshipper, Amadioha worshipper or you don't even belief in God, if you meet a true Christian, his/her actions, attitude and behaviour will make you love him/her because you will see Christ like characteristic in him.

You are just an unrepentant sinner who goes to church just like me who goes to church or most depending on where is bubbling at that particular moment.

I think this commendable religious tolerance by the yorubas is as a result of their earlier exposure to both Islam from Mali and Christianity from Europeans almost at the same period which today has led to an almost equal proportion in the number of Christians and moslems in yorubaland.

In Christian dominated areas such as the old eastern region, they never came in contact with islam in their early history until Nigeria was formed. This is why Islam is still alien to them and they still exhibit some form of intolerance to Islam.
Also know that it was far easier to convert our forebears(either through conquest or trade relations) to Islam or christianity than it is now.

This is why I still believe that if events had happened in other southern parts of the country the way it happened in yoruba land earlier, other southerners would have gotten used to living with muslims in the same family the same way they stay with traditional worshippers because ultimately blood is always thicker than anything including religion.
I used southern Nigeria to illustrate my view because they show high level of religious tolerance compared to the core northerners who are mostly religious extremists.

I keep telling you, you can't divide Yorubas along religious lines cool, find another means.
The king is dead and there's trouble in the land.

Back to topic, the reason for the religious tolerance among Yorubas is because they discovered early that spirituality is different from religious denomination. An average Yoruba has total faith in Christianity Islam and ATR and adheres to all at the same time. He benefits from the spiritual experience of all for his own benefit because indeed, all have their spiritual benefit if you are ready to get on the path of truth.

Unlike Islamic fundamentalism of the North, Yorubas are welcoming to all.

Well, I think it's culture.
Our culture allows free will, non discrimination, respect, tolerance etc.

During Christians festivals, Muslim join us to celebrate.

Same as Muslim festivals, we join the Muslims to celebrate (Come July 31, I go eat Sallah meat cheesy)

during traditional festivals, both Christians and Muslims celebrate.

Then another thing I notice is our earlierst form of education also helps.
For example, If we believe Jesus / Elijah rise up to heaven, and Prophet Muhammed rode on donkey in the sky / Cut the moon into two (I've forgotten how it was written sha), why shouldn't we believe that Sango strikes too or Obatala came from heaven via chain?

Its Godliness.
Yorubas believe that God truely create every man in his image, and so how everyone relate with God is their personal business.
This reminds me of an old woman who always prepared a sit for Jehovah's witnesses every sunday, she called the man actually one of her customers " my pastor ".
And when one or two members of her asalatu " prayer group " come in unexpectedly, they also join the mini service.
When the mini church service is over, they discuss the purpose of their visit.
Those who called themselves tebliks and tried to create religious demacation and segregation have so far not succeed in Yoruba land.
Every family have them all.
Imagine an Esu worshiper who lives in the same house with sons and daughters that are true prophets of God.
This is how it is in Yorubaland, it is the Grace of God, we bless God for it.

Re: Opinion: Why Do The Yorubas Exhibit High Level Of Religious Tolerance? by adadike(f): 11:05am On Jul 19, 2020
Because a true Yoruba man is neither a Muslim nor a Christian. Infact the two religion meant nothing to them. They have one common religion and that is ifa or idol worshipping. That is why a Yoruba can be a pastor or even an imam but when problem arises, he ports back to his true religion.
