Kindly read many of my posts backwards, you will see how to write a PhD/MSC proposal. If you are very interested in Sensor related research, then you have to first ensure your chosen university has the equipment or willing to invest in equipment for sensor-related work.

Read on ScienceDirect recent published papers on Electrochemical-based and biosensors. You will need to have sound knowledge of electrochemistry to make a good sense of sensor-related research works.

Best wishes!
Thank you prof

Hello,

Research area/studies in both Energy storage (Fuel Cell) and sensors (electrochemical/biosensor) are an emerging field of studies with practical and industrial applications.

Since you don't have background knowledge in either; I encourage you to spend time to know each of this field. There is a plethora of information about each that you can google to have some basic understanding.

After you make your decision on which of the fields you want to focus your research, visit ScienceDirect, Google scholar etc; search for recent works 7 years to date and check for common drawbacks, challenges and how you can contribute to the selected field.

Every PhD applicant and candidates must be able to search for information via the right channels, try to make sense of it and come up with sound justifications.

After you are done, you can write your PhD proposal and then if you need further help don't hesitate to share here so many can also assist.

Best wishes!

Hi wip7,

After you finished your PhD, were you confused as to which direction to go? I am presently in that phase. I need some mentoring from you please.

Hi wip7,

Hello,

No, I was not confused.

During my Masters and PhD studies, my supervisors don't understand English and I was not ready to learn their language. I self-sponsored all my graduate education, during that time I averagely make 70,000USD per semester from my business; so I have money to buy various software, to register for various training, buy books and online courses. With all these, I developed varying background skillsets. So this helps me to understand my field even more than my supervisors.

Also, there are several types of equipment not available in my university; I found private research labs where I paid around 15,000USD to learn over several weeks. I self-sponsored myself to many congress and workshops (although my university provides some funding for such). So I developed significant skills in material synthesis, characterization far beyond what my supervisors can even imagine and sometimes they just assumed he must be a spirit.

After that, I become highly confident. I started self-learning other fields like industrial engineering, mechanical and some parts of electrical just to have some fundamental skills that correlate with my background education. By the time I graduated, I have broken records in my department. I became Assistant professor just 3 weeks after my PhD graduation, with my varying background I became vice-dean of the Faculty of Engineering after 2 years and Associate Professor and that slightly switched my research area.

I am a person that always love to learn many things, always want to accomplish daily. So after PhD; I decided to split my research into the following 5 major fields (energy storage/conversion, biomedical, air/water/solid pollution control, sensors and device fabrication; corrosion) and I decided to enter each field from one orifice (material synthesis and application). So is Like using one big stone to target 5 birds.

So let me know why you are confused? this will provide background information to mentor and redirect your focus.

plz ooo, doing PhD needs alot of money especially in Nigeria. Does anyone know abt scholarships in Maths/education because my wife already completed her M.Ed Mathematics but we may not have the funds to start PhD now

If you haven't, consider teaching Mathematics overseas (e.g. UK) and doing a Part-time PhD.

Good morning...
I just found this out Today.

Bsc: Human Physiology.
Msc: Exercise physiology.
I want my PhD to be in Kinesiology or Exercise physiology.

I do not have any research work apart from my BSC project work for final Year.

And I want my PhD to be Abroad with SCHOLARSHIP and Good Research Environment.

How can I achieved this?

I need to start prepping myself for this so that I won't waste further time after my MSC (which is already bn delayed by pandemic).

I need someone to guide me through.

Prof Wip Sir...
Please sir, your guidance would be so much appreciated by me sir

PhD Scholarships Abroad is highly competitive because in most cases, its funded either by the university or research organization/industries, hence will require applicants with sets of skills that match the PhD project. Thousands of applicants from various countries often apply, so universities and funder have designed some criteria to weed out some applicants and to carefully select those with skills, credentials and relevant research experience that match the job. Considering my personal experience, there are set of criteria for selecting the applicant that I will list below (it is not a fix criteria but it mirrors what happens abroad).

First, PhD is largely a research based program or training designed to provide significant solutions to some challenges or design new innovative products or solutions, establish parametric links between cause, effects and solutions. Therefore, for PhD scholarship Abroad, the university will generally be looking:

------ for a highly-motivated and ambitious student with excellent knowledge of the proposed research, who can work well in a team as well as independently and quickly acquire knowledge in new topics (20%).

--------The candidate should have relevant background education in the proposed PhD area (30%).

-------The candidate must be able to present detailed Curriculum Vitae, describing research, publication and sometime teaching experience if such Job requires that (35%): Since PhD is research-based, this section will tend to evaluate the applicants by considering their research experience, how well the applicant can communicate the results and observations of the research (this is mainly evaluated by considering applicant publications in reputable and internationally acceptable journals)

------The remaining percentage is devoted towards language skills, proposal, and many other relevant criteria.

So how do you evaluate yourself?

You have to consider a scenerio where just two PhD positions are opened in the Field of Environmental Engineering in one University in Denmark (as example).

Candidate A:

Graduated Undergraduate in China in civil engineering
Graduated Master in Canada in Environmental Science
Publication in reputable Journals : 3
Academically sound conferences attended: 3
Soft skills: Expert skills in environmetal modeling software for development and deployment of spatio-temporal environmental models

Candidate B:

Graduated Undergraduate in Kenya in Environmental chemistry
Graduated Master in Kenya in Environmental Engineering
Research Publication in reputable Journals : 8
Academically sound conferences attended: 5
Soft skills: Expert skills in PCRaster, GIP software, GiKO, Geospatial Dataset Software, ALure mathematical models, Fluent in English

Candidate C:

Graduated Undergraduate in UK in Environmental engineering (Oxford University)
Graduated Master in USA in Environmental Engineering (Harvard University)
Research Publication in reputable Journals : 0
Academically sound conferences attended: 3
Soft skills: Fluent in English, GIPS and GiKO

If you are the chaiman slecting the candidate which candidate will you select: A, B or C?

This will help you evaluate your prepardeness.

Meanwhile, you can easily type PhD scholarships in google in the respective field and find various advertisements, you can register with ResearchGate also for various PhD scholarships and scholarship db website.

Best wishes

The good thing is that most (if not all) PhD programs in Canada comes with 4years guaranteed funding subject to certain conditions however, the funding amount varies from year to year even within a department and institution. As for province, most provinces are generally cold there are apparels for each season. As for recognition of degrees from Nigeria, from my observation, the science oriented ones with a Nigerian Masters degree are most times accepted directly into PhD while the non sciences in most cases are not. The reason for this is because the science oriented courses are practical based thus, the research are same everywhere in the world and for non science, we have a very different curriculum from theirs.

What is the difference between Funding and scholarships, and how i go about it?
Please sir,

Please sir,

Funding requires you work 12hours a week in return for the money you get from the department. Some semesters, you might be lucky to be assigned to a course that on average you work less than 3 hours a week and some you work the entire 12 hours or more. Junior year classes requires more tutorials so such ckasses, you work more hours compared to senior/graduate classes. It could be in either TA or RA positions. Scholarship is free money you don't work for.

First, you need establish if your department requires a potential supervisor who had indicated interest before you apply or you can apply without a supervisor. After that, check the requirement to ensure you meet it. You can also write the graduate director to seek opinion on what they look out for if the program does not require a supervisor.

Recent Publication (July 2020): Boron-Doped-sugar for fabrication of Energy Storage Device

Of recent, there has been increasing demand for efcient energy storage devices; supercapacitors have attracted signifcant attention as novel and competitive energy storage devices.

Approach: As natural biomass, sucrose sugar has been widely considered as a low-cost attractive carbon precursor. So, we synthesized porous carbon materials via a facile yet sustainable approach using sucrose as a carbon source and improved its electronic structure by doping with boron.

Performance: The optimum material took 275 seconds to fully charge and it took 973 seconds to completely dsicharged the energy stored; the assmebled cell was able to power small rotor fan connected to a series of led bulb.

Modeling: To understand the complex relationships between the materials and its performance, we applied machine learning-type approach via artficial neural network to obtain set of parameters that can generate optimum power.

Researcher: A graduating PhD student, Prof. Wip and other professor as supervisors.

Congratulations on yet another good publication. I see that the paper used a FC NN. I was just wondering whether techniques like skip connections, layer normalization could enhance the model. I am a PhD student in data mining and deep learning sir.

Thank you.

Sure sure Skip connections would assist in the model convergence, considering the nature of parameters we have, its will work mainly via Long skip connections .

What aspect of deep learning are you focused or which application do you direct it to?

That's a wonderful paper prof wip7.

In my opinion, the huge drawback of NN and other deep learning algorithms is interpretability. Sure it trumps statistical learning techniques on predictive analysis however when you are interested in the "whys" and "what happens if" it becomes useless as the result is a black box.
