I applied mid May but yet to get advice for medical though I submitted along my application a medical report from a government hospital.
When I checked my status I saw you do not need a medical report. Does it mean I may be exempted from it.
Hello, first of all what’s your current application status has it reached eligibility review
Secondly, only two hospitals are registered to get your medicals done by IRCC, so until they request you to go for one, unless you want to do an upfront medical
Lastly you are not exempted from it.

Why would you submit a medical report from a govt hospital. pls IRCC has only two designated health facilities it gives the right to do medicals on their behalf IOM in ikeja and Qlife clinic in Vi.

So you have to wait till you get an update

So I assume you are in the agricultural field... or more like plant science or anything that has to do with plants or seeds. lol..
Well first things first... do not rely on only one supervisor.
Have you gone to the department's profile page to check for other potential supervisors?
I am certain there will be other persons also in the field.

Look at their profile, read some of their work and then contact them if the first one you sent to do not reply by when she said she will be back.

https://agbio.usask.ca/faculty-and-staff/plant-sciences.php (I am assuming this is the department, hence my posting the link grin)

As for the bolded it depends on what you and the professor agrees on... usually Skype, Zoom, Webex works. That is up to you both.
I think not just CV, but also a copy of your research proposal would be helpful in the decision making of a professor.
However if she is interested, she will ask to see your research proposal.

Good luck.

Shalom.

sollie123:
It absolutely helps!
Thanks alot.
I meant university of Saskatchewan and my programme does require a supervisor as it involves genetic improvement of a named legume.
I came across her publications online that she worked on same test sample, so I figured my research topic might interest her.
I visited the university website where I got her email address.

What is the nature of the interview, Skype or what?
Just want to know so I prep myself. I attached my CV but not my research proposal with the mail I sent to her. Was it okay or I should have attached my proposal?

Lol @ washing plate. If you know what people are doing to survive in Canada, you Will know that “washing plate” is not a big deal and it is well respected. The most important thing is how and why you are washing plate.

I have not spent up to three years in Canada, but I have been a security officer, warehouse employee, cleaner, kid lunch supervisor, Teaching assistant, food delivery driver, etc. I have done many job you will call odd jobs except wash plate. but, you know what, it does not matter anymore because I have a very good professional job now that acknowledges my education in Nigeria and Canada.

No education can give you automatic ticket to a job(s). To add water to your garri small, after your education, you will hear the phrase “you don’t have Canadian experience” a lot. Many graduates end up doing hustle job because of this. they never planned to do it but they are at least independent and okay.

If you think “hot cake“ program is the solution, ask those that studied oil and gas related course before 2015 but graduated after the industry collapsed. At the end, your knowledge, perseverance and network will prepare you for great opportunities after school not your program.

Will you believe if I tell you several professional jobs will never ask for your certificate after you resume your job, but will fire you immediately if you can’t do the job your claim you can do. This is why experience, knowledge and skills are more important than your program of study. No one cares about your education if you can’t solve a problem. Plate washers are solving one through their service.

All the best.

Iceman2020:
Thank you Osemigho for this detailed analysis.

Please share more lights for PhD students. What options do they have during and after studies especially one that will like to end up as a lecturer.

How easy do one get offers in the academia?

Do you need Canadian experience to be in the academic systems?

Wow, you asked a serious question. I will try to give you pros, cons, and suggestions to not discourage you entirely. My advise is based on my reading and careful observation of PhD graduates in Canada including a former Vanier Scholar.

The good side of phd:
A good PhD profile makes you a global citizen i.e. you can get a research or academic Job anywhere in the world after it. Also there are funding opportunities for it. In fact, I would advise you to never accept a PhD without full funding because I don’t believe the sacrifice, without funding, is worth it. If you like book (research) and you see yourself as a lecturer/prof, you definitely need a PhD and should get one by all means.

The ugly side of a PhD:
There are less research and academic opportunities. In fact, the industry is collapsing and becoming overwhelmed day by day making the competition extremely tough. As a PhD graduate in Canada seeking to stay in Canada, you will likely apply for jobs alongside others in Canada, US, UK, etc. If I will not lie to you, US PhD student are usually better prepared for academic jobs than Canadian students because Canada to Dey carry GPA for head and US emphasize research and teaching experience.

You may not enjoy the result of doing a PhD in Canada if you are unable to secure academic jobs after your PhD. Canadian employers value experience more than education. When you enter Canada, you will see supervisors and managers with two year diploma and many years of experience.

As a fresh masters/PhD graduate, you will hear “you don’t have professional or Canadian experience a lot” from industry people. Some of it is because they are worried you are too educated and may downgrade their knowledge and ability. If your PhD supervisor have industry connection, you might be able to use that to get industry Job. Another option will be to be a global candidate and apply to jobs outside Canada. However, you may not be able to achieve a Canadian citizenship because of this.

Post doctoral positions in Canada is scarce and pay is around $45,000. A Bachelor of engineering or Art graduate with good job will likely earn around $50,000 if not more. I know a Nigerian PR who got a job over 70k without competing his masters in Canada. He got tried of school and decided to get a job. Many PhD graduate entering industry will be lucky if they get 65k after spending 4 years that can reach six years sometimes in school.

So what’s the solution:

Your best option/reward is academia. To enter academia or research industry, your biggest job during school is to build excellent research and teaching profile. Don’t be carried away by the grade competition you may come across in school. You should volunteer, take leadership positions, attend conferences and network there, publish papers, etc. Try to talk to your supervisor and newly appointed prof in your field to know and prepare for academic jobs before you graduate.

Also make sure you apply for PR as soon as possible. If you start your PhD as a PR, you will likely become a citizen before or around the time you graduate based on existing law. With this, you don’t have to stay in Canada but you will still be a Canadian. This is actually possible because I have mentored and mentoring others to do it. I am unable to take additional mentee because of the commitment involved.

To cut the story short, masters is the point of diminishing returns in Canada and most developed country. Except you are convinced that academia is what you want and you are ready to prepare and face the competition ahead of you, a PhD is not worth it. If all you want is better life in Canada as a Canadian and don’t enjoy research, you may want to transfer to a masters program or two year PGD course that interest you after your visa.

When myself and a couple of others from here left for Canada in 2017, we were eager to complete our masters and planned to do a PhD. Today, I can’t remember if any of us still want to do a PhD. Some of us have started working professionally, while others are praying for their miracle.

I’m sorry if my reply sounds gloomy. I have only advised you based on my experience in Canada and your story can definitely be brighter if you are well prepared for it. I hope you find your path no matter the circumstances.

All the best.

I love this your response,

Everything is here.

Over here there is dignity of labour. Wash plate, cleaner, serve food. So far you are able to legally survive. Who would have thought one day that cleaners, garbage truck drivers and delivery men will be termed "essential workers"? but this pandemic brought to fore that all jobs no matter how we see them are very important to the economic survival of the society.
Many of the professional and hot cake jobs we see people hold here are built on the foundation of the washing plate and cleaning jobs they held earlier. I have seen someone's CV that said over 10 years experience in service delivery and i noticed that he started working as a teenager cutting lawns during summer, then while doing his bachelors he was a barista, a dishwasher, a cleaner, a front desk officer and gradually rose on the ranks to be a customer service professional today. All his experiences cannot equate a person who graduated tops with masters in personnel management or service delivery.

And that is what they look at here. The ability to deliver... not fine credentials.

Thank you for this.

Shalom.

Thanks.

For those coming, particularly graduate students, your network and Canadian experience is very important when it comes to getting a job before or after you graduate. You can get this experience and exposure as a Teaching/Research Assistant, Volunteer, or many part time and summer positions. Whatever you do, don’t just sit in school and be getting high grades. However, don’t hustle and forget school. Canada loves its certificate too.

All the best.

I also noticed same too, there were massive medical requests without biometrics today for prospective applicants on my end. I am of the opinion that IRCC are picking up new strategies and policies in an effort to ensure that applicants can begin their studies this fall 2020.

Keep faith alive and believe the new update will favour everyone on this platform.

It will end in praise.

Boss @Frankrobbn1 please can you please respond to my challenge here please

Dear Friends,

Good Evening, I hope we are all keeping safe are surviving in Nigeria?

Please I need your help in view of the latest update from IRCC on the two-stage study permit application. I want to detail my financial challenge as well as a breakdown of my sources of finance so that I can get some inputs from some of you as regards to my chances of getting a study permit.

I work with an international church organization based here in Nigeria with several businesses, academic institutions as well as churches scattered all over the country and some few countries abroad.

I spoke to an executive member of my organization and he has agreed that the organization would write me a sponsorship letter and release all associated documents because of my study permit application. Usually, the organization issues you with a study leave with pay and expect you to come back man continue work or you are issued a study leave without pay and you can come back if there is an opening for you.

In my own case, I would only be supported with at least N500,000 and the sponsorship letter and other documents with bank statement of at least 500 million. Secondly, one of my bosses is the country director and co-founder of an international organization based in the UK. I also want to use him as a sponsor and the organization’s documents and financial details will also be issued to me.

On my part I have about 2 Million Naira in my account, after tuition fee payment. Order financial documents that I have in my possession are my investment with a mortgage Department of my organization Which is about 1,000,000, my pension Savings which is about 1.2 million as well as my investment of about 500,000 and this funds can only be accessed when I resign.

Friends these are all I have as regards to my finance and sponsorship. And I intend to apply for the preliminary Study Permit for my program in fall 2020 which is online. Please I want you to know that I have already accepted the admission offer and have also gone ahead to enrol for my courses which does not require me paying the tuition yet.

Please what are your thoughts on my current situation?

NB: The name of my school is Simon Fraser University, Burnaby, British Columbia, Canada
Tuition Fee: 1946.94 + other Payments = 2748.12

Guys I am currently searching for supervisors for a thesis based master degree in Canada. Any tips on how to get a positive response from them? They all keep telling me they’re not taking on any new student

Getting a Supervisor is like a project thesis on its own o. Even before you approach the Supervisor do your research thoroughly.
1. Go through the professor’s bio and profile. Note his research interests. Note what s/he is working on. If possible find one or two of his/her recent papers and jack them like if you are preparing for exam.
2. Your first e-mail must be well crafted and targeted to make you stand out. Give a brief history of your academic background and what led you to that field of study. Explain how your research led you to his previous paper and how you became interested in something s/he is working on. Explain your current research questions and if possible pick some questions left unanswered by his or her research or some way to further extend what he or she is working on.

E.g:
Dear Dr,
I am a so and so. I finished from ........university with ...........degree in ............ Since graduation I have worked as.........:.:. While doing .............I became interested in the field of ............:..::and began to investigate........... My research led me to your work on .................... They do not accept medical report from government hospitals. There are only two hospitals in Nigeria from which CIC accept medical.
The update on your profile is the standard update everyone has when your application is submitted.
Usually the last thing they check is your medical. By the time they are requesting you to go for medical that means they are ready to give you a visa.
So until they have checked everything else and decided to give you a visa they will now send you a letter to go for medicals. Until then your profile will continue to read “you do not need a medical exam.”

Hi. Let me just try and add my two cents:
If you have paid your tuition already and have 2m left over that is on the small side. The CIC website says you should have at least 10,000k in your account as upkeep funds aside your tuition.
At current rates that’s about 4 million. Now Vancouver where your school is is the most expensive city to live in in Canada. I am not sure what your school indicated, but my admission letter from UBC indicated that I need 25k for living expenses rather than normal 10k. The visa officer will judge if you have enough funds based on what is in your admission letter.

Another problem area is your sponsorship. Please do not use any company or business where you work as a sponsor. The requirements for proving company sponsorship is too rigorous and most times they are still rejected. For instance, the VO will want to see:
1. letter supported by a board of directors resolution granting you a scholarship or a fellowship.

2. Company incorporation papers, evidently of the business the company is involved in, tax documents of the company.

3. Evidence that the directors signing the board resolution have access to the company account. This is usually in the form of a letter from the company’s bank identifying them as the signatory to the bank account.

In summary company sponsorship rarely succeeds.

If any of your bosses is willing, they can offer you a personal sponsorship. That means they will give you their own personal account not the company account. They can write that they are ready to take care of your upkeep with so and so amount. If at all possible they should transfer the pledged amount into your account and you point it out in your letter of explanation that so and so amount deposited in your account was from your sponsor and he has pledged to continue to support you with so and so amount until you are done.

A leave of absence with pay is a great option. Added to that is the fact that it is based on the condition that you will come back after the program. That takes care of the home tie. This can only work if the pay is good enough o. No VO will accept that after your program you will leave Canada and come back to Nigeria to a 100k job. If your pay is above 400k it may fly.

Did u see anything like this in the letter.

"Only those who are eligible to apply for a work permit or a study permit at a designated port of entry can give their biometrics upon arrival".

Cos in my own case, family of 3, they only requested for biometric from my wife who applied for an open work permit.
And from such comment above, seems they want students to do their biometrics when they get to Canada.
