wunmi590:
When God created the world, He rested on the seventh day. When God gave the ten commandments to Israel, He commanded Israel to rest on the seventh day as well. In Exodus 20:11 the reason given for that is that God rested on the seventh day from His creation work. In Deuteronomy 5, we find the second version of the ten commandments. The reason that God gives to rest on the Sabbath is to remember that the Lord delivered Israel from Egypt (Deuteronomy 5:15).

Sabbath law in the New Testament
So the Sabbath given by God in the Old Testament is the seventh day. It started with sunset on Friday and ended with sunset on Saturday. That is the Sabbath that the Jews are still celebrating.

How is the situation in the New Testament? In the New Testament we read that we are not under the law, but under grace (Romans 6:14). Christians do not have to submit to the ceremonial law anymore. The New Testament shows in several ways that the Sabbath law does not apply to Christians:

All other nine commandments are repeated in the New Testament, but the Sabbath commandment is not repeated.
Paul never wrote to the gentile churches he planted that they had to keep the Sabbath. Since the Sabbath was not part of their culture, that certainly would have been necessary if Paul had been of the opinion that they had to keep a Sabbath rest.
The churches in the New Testament met on Sundays, not on the Sabbath, like the Jewish synagogues.
Paul explicitly teaches that the Sabbath is just a shadow of things to come, but that the reality is found in Jesus. He gives us the heavenly rest. Therefore Paul forbids us to judge other people on the basis of whether or not they observe a Sabbath (Colossians 2:16-17).
The Lord’s day
The Jews met on the Sabbath. Christians started meeting on Sundays (see Acts 20:7, 1 Corinthians 16:2). They did that because Jesus was risen from the dead on a Sunday. And appeared to them at least on the first and second Sunday after He was risen (John 20:19,26). Almost immediately the Sunday was called ‘the Lord’s day’ (Revelation 1:10).

So it is clear that Christians do not need to keep the Sabbath on Friday and Saturday. It is also clear that the church, following Jesus’ lead, from the beginning had its main meetings on Sunday. This does not mean that the Sabbath laws were transferred to the Sunday. We are under grace, not under the law.

That the Sabbath is fulfilled in Jesus, and that we therefore do not painstakingly have to follow the Old Testament Sabbath laws, is great news. But it would not be wise if we would use that to say we can now work each and every day. That the Lord rested on the seventh day of His creation work still is a powerful lesson for us. Rest is a blessing that we receive from the Lord. That the Sabbath law is fulfilled in Jesus probably means we should enjoy rest more, not less than in the Old Testament; that we should focus on God longer, not shorter than in the Old Testament.

Jesus’ fulfillment
While we do not need to be afraid that we are sinning if we work on Friday, Saturday, or Sunday, one great way to honor Jesus’ fulfillment of the Sabbath law is to set the Sunday as much apart as possible to go to church, to meet Christian brothers and sisters, and to focus on God through prayer, Bible reading and the reading of Christian books.
PLEASE READ THIS WITH YOUR BIBLE CLOSE BY AND AN OPEN MIND.

Many people, however, think that Paul, the other apostles and the early Church changed the Sabbath day. But what does the record of the New Testament really say?

“Therefore the law is holy, and the commandment holy and just and good” (Romanos 7:12).

We have seen that Jesus Christ did not change God’s Sabbath day. On the contrary, throughout His ministry He showed the true purpose and intent of the Sabbath. Jesus often showed that the Sabbath, and particularly His teachings and actions on that day, prefigured the coming messianic age—the time of the Kingdom of God—as one of healing, freedom and restoration for all humanity.

Jesus was a Sabbath-keeper. At the time of His death, His closest followers clearly observed the Sabbath, waiting until it was past to prepare His body for burial (Mateo 28:1; Marcos 16:1-2; Lucas 23:56; Lucas 24:1). Fifty days from Christ’s resurrection, many gathered for the Day of Pentecost, one of God’s seven annual Sabbaths or feasts observed in addition to the weekly Sabbath (Leviticus 23), and it was on that day that the New Testament Church was founded by the coming of the Holy Spirit (Hechos de los Apóstoles 2:1-4).

The Bible shows no evidence of any change at Christ’s death and resurrection concerning God’s Sabbaths. We see only a continuation of Christ’s followers observing them just as He had done—despite the assertions of some to the contrary.

Did Paul abolish the Sabbath?
If the Sabbath, or any part of God’s law, was abolished or changed in the early New Testament Church, we should find clear evidence of such a dramatic shift in the New Testament writings. After all, the books of the New Testament were written in the first century over a period of decades ending in the 90s, more than 60 years after Jesus’ death and resurrection.

Many who argue that the Sabbath was abolished in the New Testament point to the apostle Paul’s writings to justify their view. But is this opinion correct? They commonly cite three passages to support that claim—Romanos 14:5-6, Colosenses 2:16-17 and Gálatas 4:9-10.

To properly understand these passages we must look at each in context, both in the immediate context of what is being discussed and in the larger social and historical context influencing the author and his audience at the time. We must also be careful not to read our preconceived notions into the text. With that in mind, let’s examine these passages and see if Paul indeed annulled or abolished Sabbath observance in his writings.

First, let’s consider Paul’s own statements about God’s law. More than 25 years after the death of Jesus Christ, he wrote in Romanos 7:12, “Therefore the law is holy, and the commandment holy and just and good.” In Romanos 2:13 he stated, “For not the hearers of the law are just in the sight of God, but the doers of the law will be justified.” In Romanos 7:22 he said, “For I delight in the law of God according to the inward man.”

Many assume that once we have faith in Jesus Christ, we have no more need to keep the law. Paul himself addressed this concept in Romanos 3:31: “Do we then make void [Greek katargeo, meaning ‘destroy’ or ‘abolish’] the law through faith? Certainly not! On the contrary, we establish [Greek histemi, meaning ‘erect’ or ‘make to stand’] the law.” Faith does not abolish the law, said Paul; it establishes and upholds it.

In Acts 24 he defended himself before the Roman governor Felix against charges of dissension and sedition brought by Jewish religious leaders. Replying to the accusations against him, he said, “I worship the God of my fathers, believing all things which are written in the Law and in the Prophets” (Hechos de los Apóstoles 24:14).

Two years later he again defended himself against such accusations, this time before another Roman governor, Festus. “Neither against the law of the Jews, nor against the temple, nor against Caesar have I offended in anything at all,” he responded to the charges against him (Hechos de los Apóstoles 25:cool.

Here, some 25 to 30 years after Jesus Christ’s death and resurrection, Paul plainly said he believed “all things which are written in the Law and in the Prophets” (terms used for the books of the Old Testament) and had done nothing against the law!

In light of these clear statements, we should expect to find equally clear instructions regarding abolition of the Sabbath, if that had been Paul’s understanding and intent. But do we?

Are all days of worship alike?
In Romanos 14:5-6, Paul wrote: “One person esteems one day above another; another esteems every day alike. Let each be fully convinced in his own mind. He who observes the day, observes it to the Lord; and he who does not observe the day, to the Lord he does not observe it. He who eats, eats to the Lord, for he gives God thanks; and he who does not eat, to the Lord he does not eat, and gives God thanks.”

From this statement, it could appear to some that Paul is saying that whatever day one chooses to rest and worship is irrelevant so long as one is “fully convinced in his own mind” and “observes it to the Lord.” Does this mean that the Sabbath is no different from any other day or that we are free to choose whatever day we wish to observe?

Some 25 to 30 years after Jesus Christ’s death and resurrection, Paul plainly said he believed “all things which are written in the Law and in the Prophets” (terms used for the books of the Old Testament) and had done nothing against the law!

To come to that conclusion, one must read it into the verse, because the Sabbath is nowhere mentioned here. In fact, the word Sabbath or references to Sabbath-keeping are not found anywhere in the book of Romans. The reference here is simply to “days,” not the Sabbath or any other days of rest and worship commanded by God.

Keep in mind that Paul, earlier in this same epistle, had written that “the law is holy, and the commandment holy and just and good,” that “the doers of the law will be justified,” and that he found “delight in the law of God” (Romanos 7:12; Romanos 2:13; Romanos 7:22). If he were saying in Romans 14 that Sabbath observance is irrelevant, such an assertion would be completely inconsistent with his other clear statements in this same letter.....

So an eternal God that was an eternal spirit being at the Creation of the world, rested in 24 hours and continued working on the next day bah? Smh, children, children, children grin
So you don't believe he rested on the seventh day as written in the Bible?
God rested on the seventh day to buttress the importance of the Sabbath. He took the human nature in that act and that doesn't invalidate his eternal nature. Remember that Christ took the human nature to pay for our sins.

Happy Sunday to all Nairalanders.

Congratulations to us all. By God's special grace, we're seeing the last Sunday in July despite all the evil happenings all over. To God be the glory!

Sabbath is biblical and observed by Jews from sun down on Friday till sundown on Saturday.

It was ordained by God as the day in which He rested after creating the heaven and earth in six days.

Sabbath was really made by God for mankind because God

- Does not sleep or slumber He doesn't get tired like we do. He's a Spiritual supernatural being. We are flesh and we get tired, hence we do need rest.
- God wants a day to have us to Himself without the distractions that trading or other activities bring into worship.
- Every living thing God made needs to rest to avoid breaking down.
- There is a place of rest in God spiritually that we need to enter for our own peace of mind. It is possible to lay down and try to sleep but if your spirit/ mind is not at rest ( busy or worried) you won't sleep!

Do you observe Sabbath?
Which day do you observe yours? (Friday Saturday or Sunday)
Why do you worship or rest on that particular day of the week?
Have churches been opened in your State?

Do have a wonderful Sunday! grin
As a good student, you should be able to know that God didn't actually intend for the 7th day to be used as a day for him to be worshipped. He actually rested on the 7th day after completing all creation and He saw it was perfect. The seventh day came into context when God was giving the 10 commandment as a day no one was expected to work. All were advised to stay indoors (if am not mistaken Exodus 20 verse 9 downwards) But the Israelites saw that this day being a day of the lord should be used to worship him.

But after Jesus Christ ressurection the day of worship automatically change (not to the Jews) but the followers of Christ. Although the Jews always observed the Sabbath day based on the fact that they did not believe in Christ They still continued to worship on the Sabbath day but a after the early Christians , the new church really emphasized on the first day of the week. (Gotta do a research on this)

You really need to do a research on how the Sabbath was changed from Saturday to Sunday. It was not immediately after Christ's resurrection as people often say. Read about the convertion to Christianity of Pagan Rome and Constantine the great. You will understand that Sunday worship has more to do with Idol worship than Christianity. I don't want to be the one to tell you. You will believe it if you read it yourself. Thank God for the internet.

Sabbath simply means rest or day of rest. Sometimes in the Old Testament, they had week of rest or even year of rest. The day of rest was observed by the Jews on the seventh day. Christians observe their Day of worship on Sundays. Worship is technically every day though, but practically, churches meet to worship on the first day of the week. Every day is the day that the Lord has made. If you like, worship on Tuesday or rest on Thursday. What God wants from you is faith and holiness, not calendar debates.

If he were saying in Romans 14 that Sabbath observance is irrelevant, such an assertion would be completely inconsistent with his other clear statements in this same letter.....

“The Sabbath was made for man, not man for the Sabbath.
(i.e. The Sabbath was made to meet the needs of people,
and not people to meet the requirements of the Sabbath)
"
- Mark 2:27

Mark 2:23-27, contextually, even shows how our Lord and Saviour of the whole wide world, Jesus Christ, explains, that God did not have the Sabbath and then man to serve this day. That, the Sabbath, actually and/or in the first place, was made to serve man and to be for his/her benefit, as well, as being. Our bodies are not concrete, cement nor wood. We need to rest, so to regain expended strength and power so to manage and/or maintain our health, well-being and wellness. The other truth of the whole Sabbath matter, is that God didnt necessarily have to rest, but He, leading by example, did. He acted in this way, to show us how to act. Leave to us we will work round the clock, running and chasing after money until we run ourselves down, run out of steam and then unceremoniously fall to the ground and prematurely just like that drop dead. You dont lead, "thou shall not... thou shall keep my ...," by lip service, you lead by example. The "lead by example," is not the main thing, in positively influencing us, it is the only thing, lol. Leading by example is the most powerful advice you can give to anyone, and so after the sixth day, God rested on the seventh, lol

"Let no man disturb you about food or about drink or in the distinctions of feasts and beginnings of months and Sabbaths,
(i.e. Let no man therefore judge you in food, or in drink, or in respect of a holy day, or of the new moon, or of the sabbath days)
"
- Colossians 2:16

"And after the sabbaths, it being dawn toward the first day of the week, Mary Magdalene and the other Mary came to see the tomb."
- Matthew 28:1

Now, my two beloved, lovingly dear loggerhead with each other brothers shade\yinka and blue\Agent, locking horns on the matter of when is Sabbath in regards to being Saturday, Sunday or whatever day, let me draw an image to conjure up a picture in your minds to illustrate, whats going on here. I remember, when young and growing up as a child or kid, lights out was 9pm or 21:00 hours. This means, whether, I feel like it or not, whether I want to or not, it meant it was bedtime. It was not open to discussion, no debates, no arguments, it just was not negotiable other than I have to be in bed by 9pm or 21:00 hours, BUT, lol, when I finally came of age, when I transitioned from childhood to adulthood, when I have developed completely and reached maturity, I didnt necessarily have to stick to that 9pm or 21:00 hours lights out and bedtime seemingly unarbitrary order, lol.

The 9pm or 21:00 hours lights out and bedtime, seemingly unarbitrary order, lol, was made for me and my siblings, not my siblings and I for the 9pm or 21:00 hours lights out and bedtime, seemingly unarbitrary order. It was a laid down rule, set there for our needs, not us for its needs. Our needs, like for example, to refreshen our tired bodies, you of course, know when we were kids, how full of beans and/or energy we are, growing u, jumping up here and there, rolling and runnning up all over the place, tumbling down the hill etcetera.

The long and short of the nolstagic story, is that, now that we are grown, now that we've matured in sense, wisdom and become disciplined. sometimes we go to bed before 9pm or 21:00 hours, after 9pm or 21:00 hours, at 9pm or 21:00 hours and surprisingly, maybe with lights on, lol. The reality now, is that the hard and fast rule is no more there. At my age, it is now flexible, is what Colossians 2:16 above is saying, and no man can judge me for when and how I choose to have my rest (i.e. sabbath)

By the way, the plural sabbath in Colossians 2:16 and Matthew 28:1 above, this particularly serving as a fao of another brother, going by the moniker name donnie, is not talking about the seventh day rest but all days of rest which includes the seventh day (i.e. Saturday). There are sabbaths that dont fall on the Saturday, but actually do fall during the week and/or in mid week, lol.

What are we saying here, what is the point made here, lol brethren blue\Agent, shade\yinka and my dear pleasing and warm-hearted donnie, lol, it is that the time is coming, indeed it’s here now, when true worshipers will worship the Father in spirit and in truth. The Father is looking for those who will worship Him that way, lol (i.e. John 4:23) For God has qualified us and made us competent as ministers of a new covenant, not of the letter, but of the Spirit. For the letter kills, but the Spirit gives life, lol (i.e. 2 Corinthians 3:6)

Another quick one, before I close on this. I confidently am sure, each one of you knows about the implication of double solid white lines on our roads, lol. You know about obeying the letter of the double solid white lines law behind it, lol. What of, when to obey the spirit of the double solid white lines law, lol?

As a rule of thumb, I simply don't tell people what to think, I let and/or leave them to think and/or see things out for themselves, lol. I beam a high powered torchlight out for them to see things, the subject, its shape, the intricate body outlines etcetera, what's under the bonnet, whats in the boot, what in the engine, lol by themselves. The time is now, if ever there is a time, to rightly divided the Word of truth. There is no better time than right now for the truth to prevail. It's just heart breaking to watch and see that the light of the truth, can be harsh to those that have been far too long in the dark. Smh, brings mist to my eyes, all this. There are two kinds of light, the glow that illuminates, sheds light upon something for people to clearly see and the glare that obscures because people squint and shut their eyes, as the truth is too harsh for their eyes to see with, lol.
"The Sabbath was made for man,
not man for the Sabbath
"
- Mark 2:27

Jesus, in Mark 2:27 above, was teaching the principle about the Sabbath rest, that it was instituted to relieve man of his labors, just as He came to relieve us of our attempting to achieve salvation by our works. As it is now, we no longer rest for only one day, but we forever stop our laboring to attain God’s favor by ourself, by our own works oand/or by our own righteousness/merit. Jesus is our Sabbath rest from works now, just as He is the door to heaven, where we will rest in Him forever

dalass:
Do you observe Sabbath?
Yes, I observe the Sabbath, I in fact observe it, in some many other ways, asides day

dalass:
Which day do you observe yours? (Friday Saturday or Sunday)
It isn't restricted or limited to Friday Saturday or Sunday

dalass:
Why do you worship or rest on that particular day of the week?
It is as the spirit leads

dalass:
Have churches been opened in your State?
I dont think they've been allowed to

dalass:
Do have a wonderful Sunday! grin
Same to you

We Christians haven't really understood the place of the law and until we give it it's rightful place, the ultimate plan of God will elude us. As Muttleylaff rightly said, the statutes of God are eternal. Not a single iota of the Torah will pass away until all are fulfilled in Christ(Mt5:18). We should aim to fulfill the Sabbath now through faith in Christ. Just as Paul points out, there is a Sabbath ahead for every believer to labour to enter after their initial faith(Heb4:1, 9-11).
What is the Sabbath? It is the rest we come to where we no longer work but God does all the work in us as seen in the Lord Jesus(Jn14:10). It is experiencing this same oneness He had with the Father where EVERYTHING in our lives springs out from His work within(Jn17:21)
We labour to enter it by seeking God daily, surrendering everything to Him, growing in prayer until He perfects this work in us and we no longer do these but He does all.

Let no one be deceived, we can never enter into this rest until we have truly surrendered our entirety to God.

For me, Sabbath is Friday evening to Saturday evening.
Dtruthspeaker, as for me, Yahusha is my/our Sabbath

Just out of curiosity, dalass, Dtruthspeaker and Finallydead:
1/ How do you guys/ladies, connect and relate Genesis 2:3 and Hebrews 4:1-6 together and with each other? Mind the former in Aramaic/Hebrew and the latter is in Greek.
2/ How did God in Genesis 2:3 rest?
3/ What is Hebrews 4:1-6 taking about in terms of "enter that rest" and/or "enter My rest"?

U got it all wrong sir... Paul was not the one who change it sunday o ...... Everything about the life of JESUS happen on sunday ... That is why ... Paul is innocent...... Just accept JESUS as u lord and STOP judging paul
Mathew 12vs40: For as Jonah was three days and three nights in the belly of a huge fish, so the Son of Man "Jesus" will be three days and three nights in the heart of the earth.
This biblical verse clearly show, that Jesus was raised from death on Monday morning. And easter was suppose to be on Monday not Sunday. Jesus was killed on Friday, now do the simple calculation urself. Since the above verse said three night, that mean Jesus dead body was his grave for friday night, Saturday night and Sunday night and resurrection took place on Monday morning. The resurrection was changed to Sunday, because that was the god Paul worshipped then. The god of the sun. Go and understand the Bible, nothing about Jesus Christ happen on Sunday. They shifted everything to Sunday, because it a day named after one of their famous idol, the gods of the sun.

So you don't believe he rested on the seventh day as written in the Bible?
God rested on the seventh day to buttress the importance of the Sabbath. He took the human nature in that act and that doesn't invalidate his eternal nature. Remember that Christ took the human nature to pay for our sins.
Christ took our nature when he became "flesh and blood". God didn't take your nature when he rested on the 7th day. Stop confusing yourself. Don't just read your Bible, "study" it and let it teach you. God's Sabbath is eternity. When a person "dies" he enters into the Sabbath of God. He stops "working" or applying his own energy or power. He enters a realm where everything functions by the divine energy of God, so he is at rest permanently. He doesn't need to do anything. Everything has been taken care of. This is the "rest" we talk about when people say "Rest in peace". But there's no rest for the wicked (scripture and literally), so there will be no Sabbath for the wicked. The religious Sabbath of Sunday or Saturday resting, is not the same as the true Sabbath. The religious Sabbath was introduced just to be a religious provision in Judaism for Judaists to have a time set apart they congregrate for their religious activity. In reality it is not a day of "rest". It is a day of religion. Do you rest when you are clapping in church or dancing and singing, is that rest? Or do you rest when burning incense as a Jewish adherent, or performing the worship rituals to God? You're still working. This was why Jesus rebuked the Pharisees when they accused him of breaking the Sabbath when he healed a man on the "Sabbath Day". They said he was working, he wasn't meant to work. But Jesus rebuked them and dismissed their accusations as false. Why? Because he knew what the real Sabbath is, and he knew what the Sabbath for religion is, a day you work the works of God. It is a religious work day, not a day of rest. There is no rest in the religious Sabbath. But the true Sabbath of God is the true rest and it is an eternal day, not 24 hours.
