Akin Alabi is a big legit hustler whose hustle got rewarded. I wont praise a betting business but he was easily the one that revolutionalized this now common sports betting in Nigeria with his Nairabet.

He laid his hands on many business ventures (online information marketing) before he made it with Nairabet.

He was one of us in the early days of Nairaland.

Dull brain, must you talk in everything? if you don't like it, then you keep quiet.
keeping quiet might be giving the guy false hope. Atleast the artist will get closure. I wouldn't even feel bad if I were him because I would have weighed the possibility of such an answer. Life doesn't always have a positive outlook.

An artist who made an artwork of Akin Alabi and his late mentor Abiola Ajimobi got more than he bargained from the politician when he asked twitter users for a retweet of the work. Akin Alabi bluntly replied to the artist that he doe not like the work, even though the request to retweet was meant for others and not him. What is your take on this drawing?

There has been a barrage of attacks on the betting executive for being so harsh on an upcoming artist who probably needed his encouragement. Several twitter users said his silence would have been better than putting down the efforts of the artist in such a manner.

Blunt man. He could have encouraged the young man to improve. The drawing is not good though but it's a work in progress.

Why are people even doing this,

just so you can get what?? money or recognition

Even if I be davinci I won't make a free art for Donald trump

It's fuccking pay before service..

dumb fuccck

Well, technically, it isn't free.

As a fresher, you need to build a portfolio and the easiest way to do that is to do free/cheap work at the beginning of your career.

That way, you'll have something to show as samples when a big contract comes. Also you'll have testimonials from those free/cheap clients. Also you get to sharpen your skills, build a workflow and even understand the customer-client relationship.

Finally, you make some cash to sustain you till you're able to sign big deals. I've been there.

Yes, he didn't ask for it while the artist was aspiring to get some money from the art work which didn't meet Mr. Akin's standard and has every right to reject it, commissioned or not but our humanity do also beckons on us to convey our displeasure in such circumstance to encourage the artiste not by paying him for the work but constructively give a feedback that would fire him up to see his flaws and improve on his skill.
Now let's not also forget that the artist said and I quote

" please retweet if you like this art work"

and Mr Akin replied " I don't like it ".

To me that was a standard constructive reply. The "if you like it " and the " I don't like it " are very standard replies in English language.

On the other hand I can understand if you want the artist to be babyed and patronised for a bad job but there is nothing inhumane or mean about Mr Akin's reply. "I don't like it" is a feedback and a constructive one at that. If the artist is serious ,you probe further as to why he doesn't like it and get a complete feedback not whining and dishing out motivational quotes and parables. Dem say na who want something e hand dey long pass.Every means of living has its own hazard, just like people call their son's age mate sir at the office.

I am sure alot of people must have seen the art work before it got online, I just hope he does away with those people ,they are asslickers.

This thing doesn't look like him kobo. Akin Alabi said the right thing. He doesn't like it. Nigerians should stop celebrating mediocrity... Just because we don't want to hurt people's feeling, many of us are willing to take shit and then say thank you after the taking of it. Plus this looks more like an unsolicited contract... The only way to win admiration in such instance would be to be extra awesome as an artist. There is room for growth, let the artist grow first instead of trying to win approval in his/her unformed state.

I think a simple word of THANK YOU would have been better or at most a silence .its not easy to draw and even paint .anyway , I dont know his reasons but more is expected of a leader .

May be because the artist turned his head like tolotolo.

Choi, but I honestly like the picture more than the original one posted first.

God bless the artist for this wonderful hand work, may you meet your helper (Amen).

This alabi needs 100 strokes of cain, instead of him to commend him and just move on, he's saying gibberish.

Sometimes a word of encouragement is what some people need to start moving on.

Funny enough...I don't know why "Thank You" is so hard for some people to say atleast for the time the guy used to draw him.

Some people's ego can't be measured

For the young bloods..just know it that ➡️Being criticized can be a tough thing to handle...even though it sometimes can be very useful to help you grow or improve something you do...Keep pushing

The painting barely looks like him. What is there to like? If he says thanks you that wud be courteous bt not frank. I prefer people saying their minds so u can work on urself not praising mediocrity when it needs proper talking to.

Akin Alabi did not behave maturely here.

Na so maturity police.

Its a free world, he can either like the portrait or not. And he didn't. The artwork is amazing but there are issues with it however slight. He didn't say the artwork was bad or the artist can't draw. I mean its obvious the artist is talented. But he failed to accurately capture the essence of Alabi. Hence why he didn't like it.

This guy is not the 1st artist to have heard those words. And he won't be the last. It would be interesting to you to know that the great artists of old like Da vinci and co had similar experiences like this. What did they do? They went back studied the criticism they got and became better.

Criticism should be welcomed as an artist, that's the only way to notice your flaws and become better. If Alabi had just said thank you, that would have given the artist a false sense of validation. Which will make him repeat same mistakes in his next artwork. Trust me that is more harmful than what has been done here.

It took a lot of courage and maturity on the part of Alabi to say, I don't like. Against the norm that would have clearly been of no help to the artist.

And these are the hyporcritical nigerian politicians who are perssuading nigerians to love nigeria products.

Your notion is exactly the reason why people don't like Nigerian products. Look at the local rice. I heard a lot of people praising the local rice when government ban importation of rice.

But guess my opinion after getting one... It was terrible. Just because something is made in Nigeria doesn't mean you should off your brain and start praising it when it is clearly undeserving of it.

We need to start demanding excellence from each other. The American products didn't become popular among Americans overnight or because they were mediocre. No, it was because the government and the people demanded excellent products of the highest standards. Thats why most of their manufacturing companies have rules and codes to follow and their products equally have standards they must meet.

This is how you ensure Nigerian products are patronised. Why will someone go all the way to US or Taiwan to import rice when we produce premium quality products. Why do you think dettol is doing great till tomorrow?

Its not just about supporting Nigerian products. Its about supporting quality Nigerian products. For this to happen we need the right enabling environment and incentive for Nigerian manufacturers who get it right. And give a helping hand to those who get it wrong by not only criticising them, but actively help them to be better.
