Novel: An orchestra of Minorities Author: Chigozie Obioma This is different from any book I've read. The concept was crazy. It shows that the imagination of the author really ran wild. From the existence of a person's 'chi', which is actually different from a person's conscience, then to the Protagonist's Chi (Nonso's Chi) telling the story... I was wowed. I don't think there's any chapter you'll read without seeing proverbs, wise sayings and many more. At some point, I started wondering how the author came about all of the proverbs, did they already exist or were they just figments of his imagination? The story takes us on a journey through the life of Nonso. Childhood experiences, his present experiences and a lot more. It takes us on a ride through Nonso's quest to marry the one he loves. We get to see the sacrifices he made just to end up "in a happily ever after" with the love of his life. We get to hope that he would indeed achieve such, and that kept us reading till the very end. I keyed into the part where Nonso's Chi was talking about how he couldn't understand why water that is like abundant back then is now something that is being sold. It's a freaking gift of nature, why is it sold now? Another part I also admire is the part he talked about civilization. He said, "The civilisation of the fathers was hinged on the preservation of that which already existed, not on the discovery of new things” and he went further to say, “The old fathers looked to the past to move forward. They relied not on what they could see but on what their fathers had seen” It is a lovely novel but unlike Gem baby, I don't think it's one I'd love to read again. My reasons are; It's really long I'm not sure I understand the end I craved so much for the end, that I almost got tired of craving. In all, it was a lovely read and I would recommend this to everyone to read. 3 Likes 2 Shares |

Novel: An Orchestra of Minorities Author: Chigozie Obioma Superb diction and vocabularies Amazing storyline Lovely imagery Badass concept It tells a tale of love, betrayal, revenge, anger, survival, suffering, repentance and so many emotions I can't begin to describe. The story centers around Nonso's Chi seeking the help/light judgement of Chukwu on behalf of his host. In other for us to understand the deed of the host which is Nonso, we had to understand the beginning of it all. So Nonso's Chi took us on a journey from where it all began, down to where the awful deed was done. He made us/Chukwu understand the reason for such deed, so we could understand from Nonso's perspective. We get to see how strong and deep love can be. We get to see that love truly is blind as someone as educated as Ndali Would fall for an uneducated Nonso. The story truly depicted the very realistic reaction most rich parents would have if a "shepherd of birds" comes for the hand in marriage of their educated daughter. It also portrayed the lengths Nonso went, just to marry 'the educated daughter', like selling his whole property just to school (Foolishness, the thing pain me die, cos I suspected that Jamike could be scam right from the onset). It painted the picture of every scenery both Lagos, Cyprus and every other place I've forgotten. It was almost like you were in those places, with the characters. My criticisms for the story are: There were too many unnecessary digressions and narrations. One that is not pivotal to the story. For example, the time he was headed back to the bridge with hope of getting back his goosling, they mentioned a cat on his seat he pushed away. This is one of the many unnecessary narrations I saw in the book, cos add it or leave it, the story would still end the same way. The end isn't clear, Did she die? Or did she survive? Did Nonso die? Why didn't Nonso's Chi mention to him that she's still in the Pharmacy, like he could have easily just put the idea in his head instead of going to Chukwu to narrate long tale. In my Opinion, the end seems rushed. It was like the one part of the book that needed the long narration, is the one part the author didn't take his time. It was a good read but I'm not sure it's a book I'll read over and over again. The digressions, proverbs, incantations and more wouldn't keep my eyes glued to it for long. 4 Likes 2 Shares |

Book: Orchestra of Minorities Author: Chigozie Obioma The story is about nonso, a poultry farmer whose life took a turn for the worse when he fell in love with Ndali, a woman he saved from jumping off a bridge. His quest to be accepted by Ndali's educated and high-class family led him to sell all his properties to attend University in cyprus. But when he arrives in cyprus he found out he was scammed by his friend who made the arrangements for him. Everything just went downhill from there. The story is narrated by nonso's chi/guardian spirit who has come to plead for his host before the Igbo god, chukwu. It wasn't an easy read for me. There's just way to many proverbs that I thought I was reading a book of igbo proverbs. And the build-up to the story is very slow, a lot of unnecessary digressions. But, All in all the book is very educative. I learned a lot 'bout Igbo cosmology. The writer really did his research. A two star rating from me. And I won't recommend this book to anyone. Confession: I skipped a lot of pages just to get to the end I couldn't take it anymore. 4 Likes 1 Share |

Book: An orchestra of minorities Author: Chigozie Obioma I've not read a lot of African novels, the truth is that I can count them on one hand but I must say this one was very different. It contained a lot of proverbs and wise sayings that I have to be pausing, highlighting and do a deep thinking in almost every page. It was as if I was reading a book of wisdom. I likes the way the writer mixed the Igbo language and English as if they are one. He did not try to explain anything, so nice. The various names he gave to Chukwu in which I cannot remember most again was also a delight as I struggle to pronounce each of them before realizing I've heard them before. Some obvious weak point of the book is that the Chi digresses a lot in his narration. If I was Chukwu, I would have asked it (him) to get to the point. This made the book rather too long and the only thing that kept me reading was my curiosity. Also Jamike dumping Nonso was predictable probably because I've watched too many Nollywood movies and the country "Cyprus" made it easy for me. Overall, it was a nice read but not something I'll like to read again any time soon. I'll totally recommend it to others. Some of my favorite quotes: "And in time he became a man of silence who went days without speaking" (I related strongly with this) "She was one of the poor – the class of people who had been created by the new civilisation." "four days make up a week, twenty-eight days a month, and thirteen months a year," (The Igbo calendar) "The true state of a man is what he is when he is alone" "The fathers say that a child who washes his hands clean will eat with the elders" Obviously I can't write everything here, you will just have to read the book yourself. 3 Likes 1 Share |
